  • Anti-icing system can immediately respond when snowing is expected or the snow comes down on the road surface. It has been recognized that the system can reduce traffic accidents and congestion by quickly removing the frozen road surface area. However, it is very difficult to implement this system due to the expensive equipment installation and operation cost, Recently, there was a developed program for predicting the freezing area using three-dimensional model and tracking the sun path. But, there is no objective analysis method and all developed approaches are different so that the general standard of anti-icing system is needed. In this study, we proposed the decision criteria for determining application priorities of the anti-icing system based on weather and road conditions, i.e., geometric and topographic conditions. Regional climate survey, topographical analysis, and dynamic vehicle simulation considered road geometry and skid resistance was conducted to standardize the installation method of anti-icing system.

  • VMS based dispersion of traffic flows enables to decrease delay and congestion. Such being the case, there has been growing interests in VMS operation strategy. The strategy is based on driver's behavior or diversion rate. However, it was not easy to obtain each in practice. The diversion rate, thus far, was investigated by stated preference analysis or simulators. As an alternative, in this paper, a new method to obtain diversion flow rate was suggested using the toll collection system and freeway traffic management system data. A large gap of diversion rate between stated preference analysis and field survey was observed. Out of surveyed 8 tollgate data, the diversion rate was about 7% and was quite lower compared with that of 21%${\sim}$87% from stated preference analysis or simulators. With this at hand, a more careful information provision strategy should be devised and employed to correctly account this kind of differences.

  • Korean Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) has been used when we analyze the pedestrian Level of Service (LOS) of a pedestrian facility. However, the pedestrian LOS by KHCM is largely insensitive to pedestrian congestion levels. The objective of this study is to identify the source of this problem within the KHCM calculation method, and to propose an improved method using the case study from Seoul. Based on KHCM results, the pedestrian LOS is A for more than 90% of the Seoul region, which seems to be unrealistic. On the other hand, this study includes an effective adjustment parameter using the absolute value of effective sidewalk width. Using this method, results shows some changes including newly identified areas of LOS C and LOS D. The analysis of pedestrian LOS is carried out for the entire metropolitan region of Seoul in order to evaluate area wide pedestrian level of service in Seoul.

  • The local governments of major cities in Korea are giving focus on public transportation to reduce congestion and improve accessibility in city areas. In this regards, the proper measurement of accessibility is now a key policy requirement for reorganizing the public transport network. Public transport routing problems, however, are considered to be highly complicated since a multi-mode travel generates different combinations of accessibility. While most of the previous research efforts on measuring transport accessibility are found at zone-levels, an alternative approach at a finer scale such as bus links and stops is presented in this study. We proposes a method to compute the optimal route choice of origin-destination pairs and measure the accessibility of the chosen modes combination based on topological configuration. The genetic algorithm is used for the computation of the journey paths, whereas the space syntax theory is used for the accessibility. This study used node-link data in GIS instead of axial lines which are manually drawn in space syntax. The resulting accessibilities of bus stops are calibrated by O-D survey data and the proposed process is tested on a CBD of Seoul.

  • This study deals with actual commuting distance and influence of risk factors depending on commuting distance and mode in order to reestablish actual commuting zone of primary school students. Data mining analysis(CHAID) was applied for this reestablishment using survey results from 6,927 primary school students in Seoul Metro. Six risk factors; convenience level of commuting path condition, convenience level of road crossing condition, vehicle speed on commuting path, segregation level between commuter and vehicle, congestion level of commuting path, and public security level and two mode; walking and cycle are considered in the analysis. As the results of CHAID analysis, commuting distance was divided into four zones; Internal Zone(0.491km under), External Zone(0.492 ~ 1.492km, 1.493 ~ 2.699km), Commutable Zone(2.70km over), and awareness level on safety is declined as commuting distance is increased. The risk factor affecting on safety is recognized differently by students depending on commuting distance and mode. For students commuting by walking, vehicle speed on commuting path and convenience level of commuting path condition are recognized as the prime risk factor within Internal Zone and Commutable Zone, respectively. For students commuting by cycle, convenience level of road crossing condition and vehicle speed on commuting path are recognized as the prime risk factor within Commutable Zone. Analysis results show that improved plan and program for commuting path for primary school students are required considering actual commuting distance and method.

  • The Port of Pusan, the largest port in Korea, handled 23% of total sea borne cargo movement, 14% of imported cargo, 58% of exported cargo and 95% of container cargo in 1989. Also the port of Pusan has been played a key role in handing container cargo throughout the last 10 years. The paper is aimed to survey the effect of sea borne cargo movement to urban transportation, that is, to find traffic volume arising by general/bulk cargoes through the port and to estimate vehicle rated of container tractor tailer on the roads between terminal including conventional piers and ODCY, and finally the following results are obtained. (1) AADV of truck to transport general/bulk cargoes are 6,322 units in 1989,and routes penetrate into the center of city and pass through the most of urban arterials. (2) In the container transport, if HVEF is adopted to 3 of tractor trailer, AVR in each transport freeway 13.7%. (3) IF HVEF is adopted to 6 of tractor trailer. AVR are as follows: BooDoo-Ro 44.1%, WooAm-Ro 39.3%, SooYoung-Ro 17.8%, Urban freeway 20.3%. Based upon these results, the following suggestions were drawn : o ODCY scattered around the city should be unified in a few groups to raise port productivity. o Rail service for inland container transportation should be escalated to relieve urban traffic congestion. o Coastal feeder service between terminal and hinterland should be studied to restrict the penetration of container tractor trailer into the central parts in the urban areas. o Exclusive freeway system for effective container transportation should be implemented to reduce urban traffic delay.

  • Various elements such as geometry, traffic safety facilities, congestion level, weather, etc., need to be appropriately reflected in the assessment scenario evaluating the driving safety of automated vehicles. Therefore, this study first established a scenario structure and defined the layer of elements, to derive the elements to be reflected in the automated driving safety evaluation. After that, all elemental candidates that can be reflected in each layer were derived by reviewing the relevant literature. Finally, as a result of an expert survey, 77 items were selected to be reflected in the automated driving safety evaluation. The selected elements are expected to be actively utilized in developing scenarios for the driving safety evaluation of automated vehicles in simulation, proving ground, and real road assessments.
