A probabilistic model to analyze surge voltage waves on a transmission conductor caused by lightning, strokes striking a transmission line tower has been proposed. In this proposed model, a probability apace has been constructed. Based on the constructed probability space, random variables denoting the voltage peaks, time to crest, and time to half have been generated. To know the statistics of surge voltage waves, it suffices to find out the cumulative probability distributions of these random variables. A illustrative numerical example to find out out the distributions of the random variables has been carried out using the Electromagnetic Transient Program(EMTP).
This paper describes the surge calculations on cable cores and sheaths when an unit step surge is applied in a cable core. It is clear that the maximum core voltage appears at the ending point and maximum sheath voltage is induced at the sending points. It appears that the smaller grounding resistance can offer results having some trends which larger core voltage appears at the end point and smaller voltage is induced at the sending point.
In this paper, switching surge voltage distribution in stator windings of induction motor driven by IGBT PWM inverter is studied. To analyze the irregular voltage of stator winding, equivalent circuit model of inverter-cable-motor was proposed and high frequency parameter is computed by using finite element method (FEM). Electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) analysis of the whole system for induction motor and PWM inverter is proposed. In order to experiment, an induction motor, 380 [V], 50 [HP], with taps from one phase and a switching surge generator was built to consider the voltage distribution.
In this paper, the ZnO surge arrester performance of power distribution class has been studied under different manufacturing conditions such as housing materials(polymeric, porcelain), interface sealants and one-body molding type. In the recent years, the polymeric ZnO surge arresters have been developed and put into operations based on their excellent characteristics. For polymeric surge arresters, the inner gas volume is extremely small, especially in solid insulation polymeric arresters there are not any gas volume inside arresters in the structure due to polymeric materials are filled into the internal gas volume. The sealing integrity is related to safe operation of surge arrester, the prime failure reason of porcelain housed arresters is moisture ingress. In this paper, the sealing integrity of polymeric surge arresters is investigated with moisture multi-aging test and ingress test. The evaluation techniques are used to inspect the sealing integrity of polymeric arresters, including leakage current, surface temperature, reference voltage and dissipation factor.
This paper is Instant space vector PWM(Pulse Width Modulation)power conversion devices in switching power semiconductors from my generation to losses and switching when the voltage surge and current surge of electronic noise(EMI: Electro Magnetic Interference / RFI: Radio Frequency Interference)to effectively minimize the power soft-switching power conversion circuit topologies of auxiliary resonant DC tank for the purpose of high performance realization of the electric power conversion system by the high-speed switching of a semiconductor device(AQRDCT simultaneously : an active auxiliary resonance using auxiliary Quasi-resonant DC tank)DC link snubber switch has adopted a three-phase voltage inverter. AQRDCL proposed in this paper can reduce the effective and current peak stress of the power semiconductors of the auxiliary resonant snubber circuit compared to the conventional active-resonant DC link snubber, it is not necessary to install the clamp switch of the auxiliary resonant DC link, DC the peak current and power loss of the bus line can be reduced.
Cascaded applications of surge protective devices(SPDs) are required in order to reduce the stress on the electrical and electronics equipment being protected, and the energy coordination between the cascaded SPDs is very important. This paper deals with the experimental results obtained from the installation conditions of full-scale SPDs. The energy coordination between the upstream Class I SPD and the downstream Class II SPD was measured using a $10/350{\mu}s$ impulse current due to direct lightning flashes. The distances between the cascaded SPDs were 3, 10, and 50m, and the maximum test current was 12.5kA. As a result, the energy sharing between cascaded SPDs was dependent on the voltage protection level of each SPD and the distance between two SPDs. An overview of how to select SPD ratings in applications of cascaded SPDs system was discussed based on the energy coordination between the two SPDs. The proposed test results for the energy coordination between two-stage cascaded SPDs can be used in effective applications of SPDs.
Metal oxide varistors (MOVs) protect circuits and devices from transient overvoltages in electric power systems. However, a MOV continuously deteriorates owing to manufacturing defects or repetitive protective operations from transient overvoltages. A deteriorated MOV may result in a short circuit or a line-ground accident. Previous studies focused on the analysis of deterioration mechanisms and condition diagnosis techniques for MOVs owing to their recent growth of use. An accelerated deterioration experiment under the same conditions in which a MOV operates is essential. In this study, we designed and fabricated a surge generator that can apply a surge current to a MOV connected to AC mains. The coupling network operates at a low impedance against the surge current from the surge generator and transfers the surge current to the MOV under test. It also acts as a high impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage not to be applied to the surge generator. The decoupling network operates at a high impedance against the surge current and blocks the surge current from AC mains. It also acts as a low impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage to be applied to the MOV under test. The prototype surge generator can apply the 8/20 us up to 15 kA on AC voltages in the approximate range of 110~450 V, and it fully operates on a LabVIEW-based program.
This paper presents Pspice modeling methods for spark gaps and ZnO varistors and describes the application for the two-stage surge suppression circuit which was composed of the nonlinear components. The simulation modelings of nonlinear components were conducted on the basis of the voltage and current curves measured by the impulse current with the time-to-crest of $1~50 \mus$ and the impulse voltage with the rate of the time-to-crest of 10, 100 and 1000 V/\mus$. The firing voltages of the spark gap increased with increasing the rate of the time-to-crest of impulse voltage and the measured data were in good agreement with the simulated data. The I-V curves of the ZnO varistor were measured by applying the impulse currents of which time-to-crests range from 1 to $50 \mus$ and peak amplitudes from 10 A to 2 kA. The simulation modeling was based on the I-V curves replotted by taking away the inductive effects of the test circuit and leads. The meximum difference between the measured and calculated data was of the order of 3%. Also the two-stage surge suppression circuit made of the spark gap and the ZnO varistor was investigated with the impulse voltage of $10/1000\mus$$mutextrm{s}$ wave shape. The overall agreement between the theoretical and experimental results seems to be acceptable. As a consequence, it was known that the proposed simulation techniques could effectively be used to design the surge suppression circuits combined with nonlinear components.
This paper deals with the surge counter drived by lightning and switching currents. In order to install the effective surge protective devices, it is important to find the parameters of incident surges. In this paper, for the purpose of protecting the electronic circuits and counting the occuring frequency, the current driving type surge counter is designed and fabricated. The surge counter consists of surge protective divices, current detector, metal oxide varistor(MOV), rectifier, capacitor, and electromagnetic counter. This surge counter is able to count the occuring frequency of surges and to clamp lightning surge current. To evaluate the performance of the surge counter, impulse voltage and current were applied at the surge counter by the surge generator. As a result, applied surges were exactly counted and clamped.
This paper presents a method of simulating the protection effects of surge protective devices(SPDs) depending on the protective distance and types of input impedance of load to be protected. In order to analyze the protective performances of voltage-limiting type SPDs associated with the reflection and oscillation phenomena, the terminal voltage across load being protected and the residual voltage of SPDs were simulated by using EMTP model as functions of the protective distance and types of input impedance of loads. As a consequence, SPDs should be installed by taking into account the protective distance and input impedance of loads to achieve reliable protection of electrical and electronic equipment from lightning and switching surges. It is expected that the simulation method proposed in this paper could be practically used in design for installing SPDs in low-voltage distribution systems.
