  • Since 1970s, varistors using metal-oxide resistors have been applied to Gapless surge arresters for power system. In the paper, the structure of metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps for 362kV GIS which is developed the first in korea has been introduced. And the main evaluation items for the metal-oxide resistors which are reference voltage test, residual voltage test, long duration current impulse withstand test and operating duty test is tested and evaluated.

  • This paper describes the lightning overvoltage occurred differently according to installation methods of arresters and overhead grounding wire in case of double circuits distribution systems. First, the analysis models are established considering the severe case between upper and lower distribution line, when the direct lightning surge strikes to the overhead grounding wire. The lightning overvoltage is variously analyzed with the change of grounding interval and resistance, arrester installation interval as well as the magnitude of surge using EMTP. After simulation results are compared with the BIL which is now used at field, the authors propose the methods for suitable shielding in domestic distribution systems.

  • The route of surge arrester connection is very important because bends and kinds of leads increase the impedance to lightning surges and tend to nullify the effectiveness of a grounding electrode conductor. There is a need to know how effective installation of lightning surge arresters is made in order to control voltage and to absorb energy at high lightning currents. The effectiveness of a grounding conductor and bonding for 18[kV] metal oxide distribution line arresters was experimentally investigated with lightning and oscillating impulse voltages.

  • This paper describes the effect of transient state in underground transmission and distribution lines installed together in the same tunnel. Two systems installed in the same tunnel are operated by the common grounding. This paper analyzed that how much one of the two kinds of systems influences the other systems during the transient state by EMTP/ATPDraw. Single line-to-ground fault and lightning surge were selected in transient state condition. These cases were simulated variously according to the variation of common grounding magnitude, fault location and lightning surge magnitude. It is evaluated that the analyzed results will be used for establishment and operating materials of common grounding in the same tunnel.

  • Metal oxide surge arrester were developed in the late 1970s, and were immediately adopted as significant breakthrough in over voltage protection of power system. Work was continued throughout the world on the design, development and application of metal oxide surge arrester. This paper describes the evaluating test and results of practical use for analyzing the performance of gapless metal oxide surge arresters under various type test. In the result, ZnO element exhibited badness rate of 6.95 percent.

  • The breakdown Process in large gaps is greatly influenced by the gap geometry. Therefor full scale test are essential for the economical and reliable air insulation design. For switching surge design of 765 kV double circuit transmission line KEPRI is carrying the verifying tests using impulse voltage generator at Gochang test site. In this paper, the intermediate results of verifying tests are presented and the switching surge design criteria of 765 kV transmission tower flashover paths are discussed.

  • This paper describes the modelling techniques for surge analysis in underground distribution systems with power cables. To evaluate the Analysis model, the change of line model and permittivity is considered. power cable parameters calculated by LCC of EMTP are considered to evaluate surge model in underground distribution systems. It is evaluated that impulse model according to the shape of impulse source model. However it is confirmed through comparison with measurement value in field test of underground distribution systems.

  • This study aims to evaluate the properties and the performance of the newly designed disconnector for surge arrester. This disconnector was verified with the performance in long-duration current impulse test and high current impulse test. And time-current characteristic test was done at 20A, 200A and 800A(3points) for simulating the internal fault condition of the arrester. The results of this test was very good. Consequently, the newly designed disconnector was, evaluated that it is possible to be used for surge arrester in distribution line system.
