  • An epoxy coating applied to the concrete surface of a containment building deteriorates in hazardous environments such as those containing radiation, heat, and moisture. Unlike metals, the epoxy coating on a concrete liner absorbs and discharges moisture during the degradations process, so it has a different density and volume during service. In this study, acoustic impedance was adopted for characterizing the degradation of a glass-reinforced epoxy coating using the acoustic reflection coefficient (reflectance) on a rough epoxy coating. For estimating the acoustic reflectance on a wavy epoxy coating surface, a probabilistic model was developed to represent the multiple irregular reflections of the acoustic wave from the wavy surface on the basis of the simulated annealing technique. A number of epoxy-coated concrete specimens were prepared and exposed to accelerated aging conditions to induce an artificial aging degradation in them. The acoustic impedance of the degraded epoxy coating was estimated successfully by minimizing the error between a waveform calculated from the mathematical model and a waveform measured from the surface of the rough coating.

  • There are many difficulties to get the scattered field generated by obstacle which has arbitrary shape or irregular surface impedance by using analytic solution or numerical methods. In this study, we propose a method of which makes acoustic scattering holography that can predict the far-field scattered field based on nearfield measurements. This method provides the scattered fields of each wave-number components of incident fields. We express the relationship of wave-number components between incident fields and scattered fields using scattering matrix which is transfer matrix of wave-number components. Lastly, we prove the relation between wave-number components of incident and scattered field by experiments. The errors which are caused by measurements and decomposition methods are also analyzed.

  • We examined the mechanism of generation of higher harmonics by theoretically analyzing the frequency characteristics of a narrow-band surface wave generated by a laser beam with line-arrayed slit masks. We experimentally analyzed the effects of slit opening width and laser intensity on the acoustic nonlinearity of aluminum 6061-T6 alloy by using single-slit and line-arrayed slit masks. The magnitude of the harmonic wave depended on the slit opening width. In our experiment, we generated a 1.75-MHz surface wave by using an arrayed slit with intervals of 1.67 mm. The magnitude of the second harmonic component decreased about by 80% when the slit opening width was increased from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm. In addition, the relationship between the magnitudes of the fundamental and the second harmonic wave showed good linearity, which agreed well with the typical behavior of acoustic nonlinearity.

  • Al-Ni thin films were fabricated using combinatorial sputtering system to realize highly sensitive surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. The Al-Ni sample library was grown with various chemical compositions and electrical resistivities, which provided important information for selecting the most suitable materials for SAW devices. As acoustic waves generated from piezoelectric materials are significantly affected by the resistivity and density of the interdigital transducer (IDT) electrodes, three types of Al-Ni thin films with different Al contents were fabricated. The thickness of the Al-Ni thin film used in the SAW-IDT electrode was fixed at 100 nm. As the Al content of the Al-Ni film decreased from 79.2 to 24.5 at%, the resistivity increased slightly from 4.8 to 5.8 × 10-5 Ω-cm, whereas the calculated density increased significantly from 3.6 to 6.9 g/cm3. The SAW device composed of Al-Ni IDT electrodes resonated at 71 MHz without frequency shifts; however, the selectivity of the resonant frequency and insertion loss deteriorated as the Al content decreased. When there is no significant difference in the electrical characteristics of the SAW-IDT electrodes, the performance of the SAW devices can be determined by the density of the IDT electrodes.

  • We report a highly selective and sensitive 200 MHz Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensor that can detect cyanide ion in aqueous solution using surface immobilized thioester molecules in combination with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). To construct the sensor device, a monolayer of thioester compound was immobilized on the SAW sensor surface. At the sensor surface, hydrolysis of thioester group by nucleophilic addition of cyanide occurred and the resulting free thiol unit bound to AuNP to form thiol-AuNP conjugate. For the signal enhancement, gold staining signal amplification process was introduced subsequently with gold (III) chloride trihydrate and reducing agent, hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The SAW sensor showed a detection ability of $17.7{\mu}M$ for cyanide in aqueous solution and demonstrated a saturation behavior between the frequency shift and the concentration of cyanide ion. On the other hand, our SAW sensor had no activities for other anions such as fluoride ion, acetate ion and sulfate ion, moreover, no significant interference observed by other anions. Finally, all the experiments were carried out in-house developed sensor and fluidics modules to obtain highly reproducible results.

  • An acoustofluidic device using conductive liquid-based electrodes was developed for malaria parasite separation from white blood cells. In this device, the electrode channels filled with a conductive liquid were used to generate standing surface acoustic waves (SSAWs) in a fluidic channel, which can overcome the limitation of conventional patterned metal electrodes. Separation performance of the device was evaluated using fluorescent polystyrene particles with two different sizes (2 and $10{\mu}m$ diameters), which were successfully separated. In addition, a mixture of malaria parasites and white blood cells were also efficiently separated with high purity of ~98% in the CL-SSAW device at the flow rate of $12{\mu}l/min$.

  • In this study, the underwater acoustic images were obtained by ultrasonicwave. The experiment was performed in the anechoic watertank, using a passive sonar array for one and two sound source respectively by X-Y scanning technique. The receiving array was consist of 8 disc type transducers with 1.5cm diameter at 25KHz resonance frequency. The scanned data were processed by the FORTRAN IV algorithm for the reconstruction of image, and the image had some noise due to the surface reflected waves. As the result, it was found that the acoustic imaging by electrical deflection and dynamic focusing technique is applicable to SONAR with the suppression of surface reflected wave.
