  • Love wave is one of the shear horizontal waves and it can propagate between two layers in liquid without energy loss. The SAW (surface acoustic wave) sensor using Love wave is very useful for real time measurement of the viscosity of liquid with high sensitivity. In this study, the 77 MHz and 155 MHz Love wave SAW sensors were fabricated and use to measure the viscosity of low viscous liquid. To generate the surface acoustic wave, the inter-digital transducers were fabricated on the quartz crystal wafer. In order to obtain the optimal thickness of the coating film (novolac photoresist) generating the Love wave on the surface of SAW device, theoretical calculation was performed. The performances of fabricated Love wave SAW sensors were tested. As test liquid, pure water and glycerol solutions having different concentrations were used. Since the determination coefficients of the regression equations for measuring the viscosity of liquid are greater than 0.98, the developed Love wave SAW sensors in this study will be very useful for precise measurement of viscosity of liquid.

  • In this paper, the time history of the surface elevation measured at the Draupner platform in the North Sea in 1995 is used to examine the statistical characteristics of the wave data. The wave statistics for 48 surface measurements, which contain three freak wave occurrences, are summarized. The quartiles, boxplots, correlations, and pair plots of 15 variables, along with the abnormality index, are presented. The kurtosis and skewness of the surface elevation are two variables that are highly correlated with the abnormality index, which defines freak waves. Principal coordinate analysis showed that the direction of the changes in the abnormality index agreed with the changes in the kurtosis and skewness. In addition, various wave heights, except the maximum wave height, showed a similar direction for the height changes, and various wave periods showed a similar direction for the period changes. Based on the correlations and PCA analysis, the kurtosis and skewness of the surface profiles are the two most important variables to predict the abnormality index.

  • Here we consider the evaluation of the the dynamic component of the second order force due to wave diffraction by a circular cylinder analytically and numerically. The cylinder is fixed, vertical, surface piercing in water of finite uniform depth. The formulation of the wave-structure interaction is based on the assumption of a homogeneous, ideal, incompressible, and inviscid fluid. The nonlinearity in the wave-structure interaction problem arises from the free surface boundary conditions, namely, dynamic and kinematic free surface boundary conditions. We expand the velocity potential and free surface elevation functions in terms of a small parameter and then consider the second order diffraction problem. After deriving the pressure using Bernoulli's equation, we obtain the analytical expression for the dynamic component of the second order force on the cylinder by integrating the pressure over the wetted surface. The computation of the dynamic force component requires only the first order velocity potential. Numerical results for the dynamic force component are presented.

  • A floating-type wave power pump is a device which sends air into water by using wave power. The floating-type wave power pump has the new configuration composed of a curved surface reflection board, a slope, and phase plates. As a result of a water-tank experiment it turned out that the floating-type wave power pump with a curved surface reflection board and a slope raised power and efficiency in the wide wavelength waves. The result of a marine experiment was also preferable. The floating-type wave power pump sends air into the sea by using wave power, so it can be used for the improvement of marine environment. In addition, the floating body constituted of a curved surface reflection board, a slope, and phase plates, is effective as a device to utilize the energy of a wave. Therefore, it can be widely used for a wave power generation, pumping up deep seawater.

  • Surface wave techniques are widely used as non-invasive method for geotechnical site characterization. Field surface wave data are collected and analyzed using different processing techniques to generate the dispersion curves, which are further used to extract the shear wave velocity profile by inverse problem solution. Characteristics of a dispersion curve depend on the subsurface layering information of a vertically heterogeneous medium. Sometimes soft layer can be found between two stiff layers in the vertically heterogeneous media, and it can affect the wave propagation dramatically. Now most of the surface wave techniques use the fundamental mode Rayleigh wave propagation during the inversion, but this may not be the actual scenario when a soft layer is present in a vertically layered medium. This paper presents a detailed and comprehensive study using finite element method to examine the effect of soft layers which sometimes get trapped between two high velocity layers. Determination of the presence of a soft layer is quite important for proper mechanical characterization of a soil deposit. Present analysis shows that the thickness and position of the trapped soft layer highly influence the dispersion of Rayleigh waves while the higher modes also contribute in the resulting wave propagation.

  • A method for the numerical simulation of two-dimensional free-surface flow resulting from the propagation of regular gravity waves over topography with arbitrary bottom shape is presented. The method is based on the numerical solution of the Euler equations subject to the fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions and the appropriate bottom, inflow and outflow conditions using a hybrid finite-differences and spectral-method scheme. The formulation includes a boundary-fitted transformation, and is suitable for extension to incorporate large-eddy simulation (LES) and large-wave simulation (LWS) terms for turbulence and breaking wave modeling, respectively. Results are presented for the simulation of the free-surface flow over two different bottom topographies, with constant slope values of 1:10 and 1:20, two different inflow wave lengths and two different inflow wave heights. An absorption outflow zone is utilized and the results indicate minimum wave reflection from the outflow boundary. Over the bottom slope, lengths of waves in the linear regime are modified according to linear theory dispersion, while wave heights remain more or less unchanged. For waves in the nonlinear regime, wave lengths are becoming shorter, while the free surface elevation deviates from its initial sinusoidal shape.

  • Coil spring of automobile suspension system is very important to safety and dynamics of passenger car and requires a highly advanced quality control during manufacturing processes. Surface cracks on the coil spring rod produced by mechanical machining and heat treatment may cause a severe accident and large cost to the manufacturer. In order to detect surface cracks of the rod, guided wave technique is applied for a fast total volumetric inspection. Pochhammer equation is studied to investigate the dispersion characteristics of the guided wave in the spring rod and optimal wave modes sensitive to the surface crack are selected experimentally to design the experimental arrangement for the generation of guided wave. Rod samples with different size of artificial axial EDM notch on the surface ranging from 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1 mm are examined by guided wave and inspection results discussed.

  • Turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuation exerted on the surface of a structure can give rise to a elastic stress wave on the surface of the structure. The stress wave so called surface wave, will not only propagate along the surface of structure but also penerate into the structure. To reduce the transmission of stress wave into the structure the elastomer layer is usually attactched on the surface of structure. The transfer function, which is defined herein as the ratio of stress waves at the surface and bottom of the elastomer layer, is derved by use of the cylindrical coordinates system. The elastodynamics of the elastomer layer subjected to the turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuation is represented by the simplified one degree-of-freedom model for easy prediction of the stress wave transmission as well as efficient design of the elastomer layer.
