  • Analytical investigation of acoustic wave scattering from turbulent premixed flames was conducted to evaluate the acoustic energy amplification/damping. Such acoustic energy change is attributed to the acoustic velocity jump due to flame's heat release. Small perturbation method up to second order and stochastic analysis were utilized to formulate net acoustic energy and the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent energy. Randomly wrinkled flame surface is responsible for the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent field. Nondimensional parameters that govern net acoustic energy were determined: rms height and correlation length of flame front, incident wave frequency, incidence angle, and temperature ratio. The dependence of net acoustic energy upon these parameters is illustrated by numerical simulations in case of Gaussian statistics of flame front. Total net energy was amplified and the major factors that affect such energy amplification are incidence angle and temperature ratio. Coherent (incoherent) energy is damped (amplified) with rms height and correlation length of flame front.

  • A laser shock cleaning technology is a new dry cleaning methodology for the effective removal of small particles from the surface. This technique uses a plasma shock wave produced by a breakdown of air due to an intense laser pulse. In order to optimize the laser shock cleaning process, it needs to evaluate the cleaning performance quantitatively by using a monitoring technique. In this paper, an acoustic monitoring technique was attempted to investigate the laser shock cleaning process with an aim to optimize the cleaning process. A wide-band microphone with high sensitivity was utilized to detect acoustic signals during the cleaning process. It was found that the intensity of the shock wave was strongly dependent on the power density of laser beam and the gas species at the laser beam focus. As a power density was larger, the shock wave became stronger. It was also seen that the shock wave became stronger in the case of Ar gas compared with air and N$_2$ gas.

  • The focus of this paper is on the numerical investigation of obliquely incident wane interactions with a system composed of full submerged and floating dual buoy/vertical-flexible-membrane breakwaters placed in parallel with spacing. The fully submerged systems allow surface and bottom clearances to enable wave transmission over and under the system. The problem is formulated based on the two-dimensional multi-domain hydro-elastic linear wave-body interaction theory. The hydrodynamic interaction of oblique incident waves with the combination of the rigid and flexible bodies was solved by the distribution of the simple sources (modified Bessel function of fille second kind) tat satisfy the Helmholz governing equation. Using this computer program, the performance of various dual systems varying buoy radiuses and drafts, membrane lengths, clearances. spacing, mooring-lines stiffness, mooring types, water depth, and wave characteristics is thoroughly examined. It is found that the fully submerged and floating dual buoy/membrane breakwaters call, if it is properly tuned to the coming waves, have good performances ill reflecting the obliquely incident waves over a tilde range of wave frequency and headings.

  • The stability of flows induced by a surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagating along the deformable walls in a confined parallel-plane microchannel or slab in the laminar flow regime is investigated. The governing equation which was derived by considering the nonlinear coupling between the deformable or waving interface and viscous fluids is linearized and then the problem is solved by a verified code based on the spectral method together with the associated interface and boundary conditions. The value of the critical Reynolds number was found to be near 1439 which is much smaller than the rigid-wall case: 5772 for conventional pressure-driven flows.

  • To improve our current understanding of tsunami-like solitary waves interacting with a row of vertical slotted piles on a sloping beach, a 3D numerical wave tank based on the CFD tool $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ was developed in this study. The Navier-Stokes equations were employed to solve the two-phase incompressible flow, combining with an improved VOF method to track the free surface and a LES model to resolve the turbulence. The numerical model was firstly validated by our laboratory measurements of wave, flow and dynamic pressure around both a row of piles and a single pile on a slope subjected to solitary waves. Subsequently, a series of numerical experiments were conducted to analyze the breaking wave force in view of varying incident wave heights, offshore water depths, spaces between adjacent piles and beach slopes. Finally, a slamming coefficient was discussed to account for the breaking wave force impacting on the piles.

  • The three-dimensional Hashin criterion and user subroutine VUMAT were used to simulate the damage in the composite layer, and the secondary stress criterion was used to simulate the interlayer failure of the cohesive element of the bonding layer and the propagation characteristics under the layer. The results showed that when the shear stress wave (shear wave) propagates on the surface of the laminate, the stress wave attenuation along the fiber strength direction is small, and thus producing a large stress profile. When the compressive stress wave (longitudinal wave) is transmitted between the layers, it is reflected immediately instead of being transmitted immediately. This phenomenon occurs only when the energy has accumulated to a certain degree between the layers. The transmission of longitudinal waves is related to the thickness and the layer orientation. Along the symmetry across the thickness direction, the greater is the stress amplitude along the layer direction. Based on the detailed investigation on the impact on various laminated composites carried out in this paper, the propagation characteristics of stress waves, the damage and the destruction of laminates can be explained from the perspective of stress waves and a reasonable layering sequence of the composite can be designed against damage and failure from low velocity impact.

  • In this paper, we investigated the propagation of surface waves in a nonhomogeneous rotating fibre-reinforced viscoelastic anisotropic media of higher order of nth order including time rate of strain. The general surface wave speed is derived to study the effect of rotation on surface waves. Particular cases for Stoneley, Love and Rayleigh waves are discussed. The results obtained in this investigation are more general in the sense that some earlier published results are obtained from our result as special cases. Also results for homogeneous media can be deduced from this investigation. For order zero our results are well agreed to fibre-reinforced materials. Also by neglecting the reinforced elastic parameters, the results reduce to well known isotropic medium. It is also observed that, surface waves cannot propagate in a fast rotating medium. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of rotation and parameters for fibre-reinforced of the material medium Numerical results are given and illustrated graphically. The results indicate that the effect of rotation and parameters for fibre-reinforced of the material are very pronounced.

  • This paper presents the numerical results of a simulation of the free surface flow around a blunt bow ship model and focuses on the validation of the proposed method with a brief investigation of the relation between the resistance and free surface behavior. A finite volume method based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is used to solve the governing flow equations, where the free surface, including wave breaking,is captured by using a two-phase Level-Set (LS) method. For turbulence closure, a two equation k-${\varepsilon}$ model with the standard wall function technique is used. Finally, the numerical results are compared with the available experimental data, showing good agreement.

  • Surface polymer layer formed on the silicon wafer during the oxide overetching using $C_4F_8$/ helicon wave plasmas and their characteristics were investigated using spectroscopic elipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Overetch percentage and dc-self bias voltage were varied to investigate the effects on the characteristics of the polymers remaining on the overetched silicon surface. The increase of bias voltage from -80 volts to -120 volts increased the C/F ratio and carbon bondings such as C-C, $C-CF_x$/, and C-Si in the polymer while reducing the thickness of the polymer layer. However, the increase of the overetch percentage from 50% to 100% did not change the composition of the polymer layer and the carbon bondings in the polymer layer remained same even though it increased the polymer thickness. The polymer layer formed at the higher dc-self bias voltage was more difficult to be removed by the following various post-etch treatments compared to that formed at the longer overetch percentage.

  • An investigation has been carried out for the propagation of torsional surface waves in an inhomogeneous prestressed layer over an inhomogeneous half space when the upper boundary plane is assumed to be rigid. The inhomogeneity in density, initial stress (tensile and compressional) and rigidity are taken as an arbitrary function of depth, where as for the elastic half space, the inhomogeneity in density and rigidity is hyperbolic function of depth. In the absence of heterogeneities of medium, the results obtained are in agreement with the same results obtained by other relevant researchers. Numerically, it is observed that the velocity of torsional wave changes remarkably with the presence of inhomogeneity parameter of the layer. Curves are compared with the corresponding curve of standard classical elastic case. The results may be useful to understand the nature of seismic wave propagation in geophysical applications.
