This study was performed to compare the effects of hydrocolloid(Duoderm$\circledR$, HC in this study) and hydrogel (Nu-Gel$\circledR$, HG in this study) occlusive dressing materials on degree of exudate, wound contraction, epithelialization, and healing of full-thickness skin wound in dogs. Three wounds measuring 2${\times}$2 cm in size were created bilaterally(6 wounds/dog) on the dorsolateral aspect of the trunk of 12 dogs. In each dog, the wounds were treated with HC, HG, and normal saline, respectively. For a 4 week period, the wounds were evaluated gross aspects and histopathological aspects. There were no statistically significant differences between treatment groups in percentage of wound contraction, percentage of epithelialization, and percentage of wound total healing during the first week. Significant differences were first detected on day 14. On day l4(P < 0.01) and 21 (P < 0.05), mean percentage of epithelialization of HG-treated wound was significantly greater than those in HC- and normal saline-treated wound. Mean percentage of wound contraction of HG-treated wound was significantly greater than that in HC- and control wounds on day 21(P< 0.05). On day 21, mean percentage of wound healing of HG-treated wound was significantly greater than that in HC- and control wounds(P < 0.02). On day 1, 4, and 7 after wound creation, although severe infiltration of PMN (polymorphonuclear leukocyte) cells in HC- and control wounds were observed in the subcutis and moderate infiltration of PMN cells in HG-treated wound were observed in the subcutis, we did not detect significant differences. On day 14 after wounding creation, in the wounds treated with HG dressing, epithelial cells were found over the surface, and edema further decreased in the tissue under the wounds, and the granulation tissue was replaced with collagen fibers. On day 21 after wound creation, in HG-treated wound compared with other experimental material-treated wounds, regenerated epidermis covered most of the wound surface, and the granulation tissue was more replaced with collagen fibers than that on day 14. Overall results indicated that the use of hydrogel dressing materials(Nu-Gel$\circledR$) as hydrocolloid dressing (Duoderm$\circledR$) materials and normal saline treatment on full-thickness skin wounds in dogs increased the rate of healing at repair stage.
The individual (customized) immobilization has been used to reproduce the patients' set-up on daily base. There are many various devices available commercially. To evaluate dosimetric characteristics of vacuum cushion, we analysed the surface dose and transmission factor for d$_{max}$ when patient is immobilized with vacuum cushion. Experiments were performed with 4 MV (Varian 4/100, USA), 6 MV, 15 MV (Varian CL2100C/D, USA) photon beams and five field sizes (5$\times$5, 10$\times$10, 20$\times$20, 30$\times$30, 40$\times$40 $\textrm{cm}^2$) on each occasion. Outputs were measured from surface of polysterene phantom to d$_{max}$ with four different thicknesses of cushion, which is 12, 32, 48 mm and only vinyl without styroforms. As results, the transmission factor for thicknesses of vacuum cushion was ranged from 0.9953 to 1.0043. The more the thickness of vacuum cushion is thick, the more surface dose delivered to patient is increased. The surface dose vary with the thickness of vacuum cushion for energy and field size. The skin reactions may result. But the variation is not serious in the clinic.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the thermal resistance and the liquid/vapor water transfer characteristics of four waterproof and water vapor permeable coated fabrics with the ground fabric called nylon taffeta. In order to establish the experimental environment, outdoor temperature and humidity in Taegu during the last three years were examined and the experiment was performed at (1) $15^{\circ}C$, 50% R.H., (2) $20^{\circ}C$, 60% R.H., (3) $25^{\circ}C$, 65% R.H., which were the average standards in spring and fall. The test results were as follows ; 1. Among physical parameters, the thinner the thickness was, the higher the water vapor permeability was. But the porosity in thickness was not proportional to water vapor permeability linearly. 2. The thicker the thickness of specimens was and the smaller the bulk density and porosity were, the higher the thermal resistance. And the results also shown that the larger the temperature difference between the environmental temperature and the hot plate was, the more the difference of CLO values was apparent. 3. Since the contact angle of all specimens are above $90^{\circ}$, the all specimens have a good performance in waterproof. The more the specimens surface were rough, the higher the thermal resistance was. 4. According to the result of performing moisture transfer test using the simulating body skin-clothing-environment system, the humidity sensor placed in between the fabric and the environment detected the full saturation in 10 minutes after the experiment had began at $15^{\circ}C$, 50% R.H. and in 15 minutes after the experiment both at $20^{\circ}C$, 60% R.H. and at $25^{\circ}C$, 65% R.H. 5. ${\Delta}$ values of the humidity sensors placed in between the human body and the fabric and in between the fabric and the environment fluctuated repeatedly within the range of $20{\sim}40%$ at $20^{\circ}C$, 60% R.H., and $15{\sim}30%$ at $25^{\circ}C$, 65% R.H.
Energy absorption distribution according to lead shielding for 511 keV ${\gamma}$ ray was evaluated using a Monte Carlo simulation in PET/CT. Experimental method was performed about the depth of skin surface(0.07), lens(3) and the depth(10) was conducted by using ICRU Slab phantom. Difference of energy absorption distribution according to lead thickness and effect of air gap according to distance of lead and phantom. As a result, study showed that using a lead shielding makes high energy distribution by backscatter electron. As a distance between lead and phantom increased, energy absorption distribution gradually decreased. 9 cm or more air gap should exist to prevent effect of backscatter electron which reaches skin surface, when 0.25 mmPb shielding is used. Also 1 cm or more air gap was needed to prevent the effect in 0.5 mmPb. If air gap was not concerned, 0.75 mm or more lead thickness was necessary to prevent effect of backscatter electron.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out the dose variation according to thickness of the air gap between the patient's body surface and immobilization device in the treatment plan. Materials and Methods : Four conditions were created by adjusting the air gap thickness using 5 mm bolus, ranging from 0 mm to 3 mm bolus. Immobilization was placed on top in each case. And computed tomography was used to acquire images. The treatment plan that 430 cGy (Relative Biological Effectiveness,RBE) is irradiated 6 times and the dose of 2580 cGy (RBE) is delivered to 95% of Clinical Target Volume (CTV). The dose on CTV was evaluated by Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) of the lateral dose profile and skin dose was evaluated by Dose Volume Histogram (DVH). Result: Results showed that the FWHM values of the lateral dose profile of CTV were 4.89, 4.86, 5.10, and 5.10 cm. The differences in average values at the on the four conditions were 3.25±1.7 cGy (RBE) among D95% and 1193.5±10.2 cGy (RBE) among D95% respectively. The average skin volume at 1% of the prescription dose was 83.22±4.8%, with no significant differences in both CTV and skin. Conclusion: When creating a solid-type immobilization device for carbon particle therapy, a slight air gap is recommended to ensure that it does not extend beyond the dose application range of the CTV.
Purpose : To obtain the uniform dose at limited depth to entire surface of the body, the dose characteristics of degraded electron beam of the large target-skin distance and the dose distribution of the six-dual electron fields were investigated Materials and Method : The experimental dose distributions included the depth dose curve, spatial dose and attenuated electron beam were determined with 300 cm of target-skin distance (TSD) and full collimator size (35*35 $cm^2$ on TSD 100 cm) in 4 MeV electron beam energy. Actual collimated field size of 105 cm * 105 cm at the distance of 300 cm could include entire hemibody. A patient was standing on step board with hands up and holding the pole to stabilize his/her positions for the six-dual fields technique. As a scatter-degrader, 0.5 cm of acrylic plate was inserted at 20 cm from the body surface on the electron beam path to induce ray scattering and to increase the skin dose. Results : The full width at half maximum(FWHM) of dose profile was 130 cm in large field of 105*105 $cm^2$ The width of $100\pm10\%$ of the resultant dose from two adjacent fields which were separated at 25 cm from field edge for obtaining the dose unifomity was extended to 186 cm. The depth of maximum dose lies at 5 mm and the 80$\%$ depth dose lies between 7 and 8 mm for the degraded electron beam by using the 0.5 cm thickness of acrylic absorber. Total skin electron beam irradiation (TSEBI) was carried out using the six dual fields has been developed at Stanford University. The dose distribution in TSEBI showed relatively uniform around the flat region of skin except the protruding and deeply curvatured portion of the body, which showed excess of dose at the former and less dose at the latter. Conclusion : The percent depth dose, profile curves and superimposed dose distribution were investigated using the degraded electron beam through the beam absorber. The dose distribution obtained by experiments of TSEBI showed within$\pm10\%$ difference except the protruding area of skin which needs a shield and deeply curvatured region of skin which needs boosting dose.
In this study, fine structures of silica, titanium dioxide, talc and kaolin used in decorative cosmetics and the mixture extracted from BB cream cosmetics were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Kaolin had plate like shape structures of polygon with smooth surface and edge of kaolin had a relatively smooth appearance in comparison with talc. Also, thickness of each layer was estimated to about $0.1{\mu}M$ in the lump formed in stratum of several layers. Talc was observed by lumps shape phase of layering very thin flake. Boundary of thin flake was sharp or angular phase and thickness of flake was approximately 600 nm in diameter. When comparing the thickness of kaolin and talc, we was confirmed that kaolin was thicker than talc. Diameter of titanium dioxide was estimated to 0.2~0.3 ${\mu}M$ and surface of particle was a soft cubic form. Silica was confirmed that variety of size from 200 nm to $15{\mu}M$ of globular shape was measured. From the observation of inorganic pigments, silica was homogeneous dispersed in the BB cream cosmetics and among each other was filled with relatively small size like talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide and iron oxide. In conclusion, we suggest that silica at decorative cosmetics were formed in cosmetic coat at the skin as the minimum thickness.
Purpose : To evaluate the effect on surface dose due to Aquaplast used for immobilizing the patients with head and neck cancers in photon beam radiotherapy Materials and Methods: To assess surface and buildup region dose for 6MV X-ray from linear accelerator(Siemens Mevatron 6740), we measured percent ionization value with the Markus chamber model 30-329 manufactured by PTW Frieburg and Capintec electrometer, model WK92. For measurement of surface ionization value, the chamber was embedded in $25{\times}25{\times}3cm^3$ acrylic phantom and set on $25{\times}25{\times}5cm^3$ polystyrene phantom to allow adequate scattering. The measurements of percent depth ionization were made by placing the polystyrene layers of appropriate thickness over the chamber. The measurements were taken at 100cm SSD for $5{\times}5cm^2$, $10{\times}10cm^2$ and $15{\times}15cm^2$ field sizes, respectively. Placing the layer of Aquaplast over the chamber, the same procedures were repeated. We evaluated two types of Aquaplast: 1.6mm layer of original Aquaplast(manufactured by WFR Aquaplast Corp.) and transformed Aquaplast similar to moulded one for immobilizing the patients practically. We also measured surface ionization values with blocking tray in presence or absence of transformed Aquaplast. In calculating percent depth dose, we used the formula suggested by Gerbi and Khan to correct overresponse of the Markus chamber. Results : The surface doses for open fields of $5{\times}5cm^2$, $10{\times}10cm^2$, and $15{\times}15cm^2$ were $79\%$, $13.6\%$, and $18.7\%$, respectively. The original Aquaplast increased the surface doses upto $38.4\%$, $43.6\%$, and $47.4\%$, respectively. For transformed Aquaplast, they were $31.2\%$, $36.1\%$, and $40.5\%$, respectively. There were little differences in percent depth dose values beyond the depth of Dmax. Increasing field size, the blocking tray caused increase of the surface dose by $0.2\%$, $1.7\%$, $3.0\%$ without Aquaplast, $0.2\%$, $1.9\%$, $3.7\%$ with transformed Aquaplast, respectively. Conclusion: The original and transformed Aquaplast increased the surface dose moderately. The percent depth doses beyond Dmax, however, were not affected by Aquaplast. In conclusion, although the use of Aquaplast in practice may cause some increase of skin and buildup region dose, reductioin of skin-sparing effect will not be so significant clinically.
The aims of the present study were to characterize the effect of glucocorticosteroids (GCs) on the normal canine skin and to evaluate the effect of a lipid mixture (LM), containing cholesterol, pseudoceramide, and free fatty acid, on the steroid-induced damaged skin of dogs. Five beagles were involved and the skin of the back of each dog was topically applied with four kinds of GCs twice daily for 28 days. LM was applied after that period of GCs application. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, and skin pH were assessed during experimental periods and histopathological evaluation was performed. TEWL was significantly increased, with a maximum increase obtained on day 28 (p < 0.01). Skin pH was significantly decreased, with a maximum decrease obtained on day 28 (p < 0.01). Skin surface hydration was significantly increased on day 3, but values of skin hydration were progressively decreased and finally reached those of baseline. In histology, as results of steroid application, losses of keratin layers in the stratum corneum and edematous changes in the upper parts of dermis, and consequently, thickness of the epidermis and the stratum corneum were decreased. In addition, the numbers of hair follicles were markedly decreased in steroid control as compared to intact control. However, these skin atrophic changes were markedly inhibited by treatment of LM as compared with steroid control in the present study. Moreover, all biophysical parameters were reached to the baseline after LM treatment. These results showed that the topically applied GCs induced skin barrier impairment and a LM should be effective on repair of disturbed skin barrier function in dogs. Therefore, it is concluded that a LM tested in the present study is expected to treat the steroid-induced skin damages.
Purpose: TLD experiments were set up to measure the dose distribution and to analyze the influence on dose measurement of thin metal plate and solid water phantom. The aim of the present study was to investigate the build-up effect of metal plate loaded on TLD chip and depth dose in the controlled environment of phantom measurements. Materials and Methods: Measurements were done by using LiF TLD-100 loaded by a thin metal plate with the same surface area (3.2$\times$3.2 $\textrm{mm}^2$) as TLD chip. TLD chips loaded with one metal plate from three different metal plate (Tin, Copper, Gold) of different thicknesses (0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3 mm) were used respectively to measure radiation dose. Using the TLD loaded with one metal plate, surface dose and the depth dose at the build-up maximum region were investigated. Results: Using a metal plate on TLD chip increased the surface dose. Surface dose curve shows the dose build-up against equivalent thickness of metal to water. The values of TL reading obtained by using metal plate at depth of build-up maximum are about 8% to 13% lower than those obtained by normal TLD chip. Conclusion: The metal technique used for TLD dosimetry could provide clinicals information about the build-up of dose up to 4.2mm depth in addition to a depth dose distribution. The results of TLD with a metal plate measurements may help with decisions to boost or bolus certain areas of the skin.
