  • The shot peening process is most often used to improve fatigue properties of metal parts. The single most critical parameter of the shot peening process is the shot ball itself. Without the correct quality media, all other shut peening parameters are extraneous and the desired fatigue improvement and consistency of improvement will not be achieved. Shot peening involves modifications of the surface and subsurface condition of a material that can be described by the change of the residual stresses, the hardness, and the surface roughness. This Paper Presents the shot peening to optimize the shot ball parameters. The effect of shot peening parameter on the surface roughness, surface hardness and residual stress are investigated.

  • In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9(leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the X-ray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035m/s(50rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.

Residual stresses and viscoelastic deformation of an injection molded automotive part

  • Injection molding is one of the most common operations in polymer processing. Good quality products are usually obtained and major post-processing treatment is not required. However, residual stresses which exist in plastic parts affect the final shape and mechanical properties after ejection. Residual stresses are caused by polymer melt flow, pressure distribution, non-uniform temperature field, and density distribution. Residual stresses are predicted in this study by numerical methods using commercially available softwares, $Hypermesh^{TM},\;Moldflow^{TM}\;and\;ABAQUS^{TM}$. Cavity filling, packing, and cooling stages are simulated to predict residual stress field right after ejection by assuming an isotropic elastic solid. Thermo-viscoelastic stress analysis is carried out to predict deformation and residual stress distribution after annealing of the part. Residual stresses are measured by the hole drilling method because the automotive part selected in this study has a complex shape. Residual stress distribution predicted by the thermal stress analysis is compared with the measurement results obtained by the hole drilling method. The molded specimen has residual stress distribution in tension, compression, and tension from the surface to the center of the part. Viscoelastic deformation of the part is predicted during annealing and the deformed geometry is compared with that measured by a three dimensional scanner. The viscoelastic stress analysis with a thermal cycle will enable us to predict long term behavior of the injection molded polymeric parts.

  • This paper investigated the effect of the film deposition rate for $CrN_x$ microstructure and mechanical properties. For these purpose, pure Cr an stoichiometric CrN films were deposited with various target power density on Si hardened M2 tool steel. The variation of ni trogen concentration in $CrN_x$ f analyzed by AES and deposition rate was calculated by measuring of thickness using ${\alpha}-step$ profilometer. The microstructure was analyzed by X-Ray Diffract and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), and mechanical properties were evalua residual stress, microhardness and adhesion tests. Deposition rate of Cr and CrN increased as an almost linear function of target power density from $0.25\mu\textrm{m}/min$ and $0.15\mu\textrm{m}/min$ to $0.43\mu\textrm{m}/min$. Residual stresses of Cr and CrN films were from tensi Ie to compressive stress with an increase of deposi tion rate a compressive stresses were increased as more augmentation of deposition r maximum hardness value of $2300kg/\textrm{mm}^2$ and the best adhesion strength correspond HF 1 were obtained for CrN film synthesized at the highest target densitY($13.2W/\textrm{mm}^2$) owing to high residual compressive stress and increasing mobility.

Influence of Change of Ni Concentration in Baths Fabricated by Dissolving Metal Ni Powders on Properties of Electrodeposited Ni Film (금속 Ni 분말을 용해하여 제조된 용액에서 Ni 농도 변화가 전기도금 된 Ni 필름 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Chloride baths for electrodeposited Ni thin films were fabricated by dissolving metal Ni powders with the mixed solution consisting of HCl and de-ionized water. Current efficiency, residual stress, surface morphology and microstructure of Ni films with the change of metal ion ($Ni^{2+}$) concentrations in the plating solution were studied. Current efficiency was measured to be more than 90% with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentrations in the plating solution. Residual stress of Ni thin film was increased from about 400 to 780 MPa with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration from 0.2 to 0.5 M. It is gradually decreased to 650 MPa at 0.9 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration. Smooth surface morphologies were observed over 0.3 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration, but nodule surface morphology at 0.2 M. Ni films consist of FCC(111), FCC(200), FCC(220) and FCC(311) peaks in XRD patterns. Preferred orientation of FCC(111) was observed and its intensity was slightly decreased with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration. The average grain size was slightly increased at 0.3 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration and then slightly decreased with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration.

Effects of Cryogenic Treatment Cycles on Residual Stress and Mechanical Properties for 7075 Aluminum Alloy (극저온 열처리가 7075 알루미늄 합금의 잔류응력과 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the effects of cryogenic treatment cycles on the residual stress and mechanical properties of 7075 aluminum alloy (Al7075) samples, in the form of a tube-shaped product with a diameter of 500 nm, were investigated. Samples were first subjected to solution treatment at $470^{\circ}C$, followed by cryogenic treatment and aging treatment. The residual stress and mechanical properties of the samples were systematically characterized. Residual stress was measured with a cutting method using strain gauges attached on the surface of the samples; in addition, tensile strength and Vickers hardness tests were performed. The detailed microstructure of the samples was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that samples with 85 % relief in residual stress and 8% increase in tensile strength were achieved after undergoing three cycles of cryogenic treatments; this is in contrast to the samples processed by conventional solution treatment and natural aging (T4). The major reasons for the smaller residual stress and relatively high tensile strength for the samples fabricated by cryogenic treatment are the formation of very small-sized precipitates and the relaxation of residual stress during the low temperature process in uphill quenching. In addition, samples subjected to three cycles of cryogenic treatment demonstrated much lower residual stress than, and similar tensile strength compared to, those samples subjected to one cycle of cryogenic treatment or artificial aging treatment.

Residual Stress Analysis of Repair Welded Rail Using the ABAQUS User Subroutine (ABAQUS 서브루틴을 이용한 레일 보수용접 잔류응력 해석)

  • Reduction of welding residual stress is very important in the railway industry, but calculating its distribution in structures is difficult because welding residual stress formation is influenced by various parameters. In this study, we developed a finite element model for simulating the repair welding process to recover a surface damaged rail, and conducted a series of parametric studies while varying the cooling rate and the duration of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to find the best conditions for reducing welding residual stress level. This paper presents a three-dimensional model of the repair welding process considering the phase transformation effect implemented by the ABAQUS user subroutine, and the results of parametric studies with various cooling rates and PWHT durations. We found that heat treatment significantly reduced the residual stress on the upper rail by about 170 MPa.

Using the Finite Element Method, 3 Dimensional FE Analysis of Residual Stress by Cold Expansion Method in the Plate Baying Adjacent Holes (인접홀에서 홀확장법 적용시, 유한요소법을 이용한 잔류응력해석)

  • In the aerospace industry, Cold expansion has been used the most important method that is retarded of crack initiation from fastener hole surface. Cold expansion method(CEM) is that a oversized tapered mandrel goes through the hole in order to develop a compressive residual stress as the passing of the mandrel around the hole. Therefore, because of characteristic of mandrel inserting, Residual Stress Distributions (RSD) are differently generated form Entry, Mid and Exit position of the plate. Also, it is respected that RSD are changed as distances between holes. In this paper, It is performed a FE analysis of RSD by CEM and it is respectively shown RSD in the Entry, Mid and Exit position. It is compared residual stress results form the cold expansion in these two cases: the concurrent CEM and the sequential CEM. From this research, it has been found that compressive residual stress of Entry position is lower than other positions. Also, the concurrent CE of adjacent holes leads to much higher compressive residual stress than the sequential CE. In addition, in the sequential CE case, a compressive RSD of 1 step's hole around is lower than compressive RSD of 2 step's hole around.

The Application of Electropolishing for Removing Burrs and Residual Stress of Stamping Leadframe (스탬핑 리드프레임의 버와 잔류응력 제거를 위한 전해연마의 적용)

  • The lead frame, which is principal material used in semiconductor packaging, is required to be microscopic in leads and pitches to cope with miniaturization, thin film, large scale integrated. In addition, it is indispensable to eliminate residual stress and burrs occurring at manufacturing lead frames This thesis applied electrolytic abrasion in order to remove burrs and residual stress created during the stamp process. Electrolytic abrasion removed the burrs on the surface of lead frame. Removal of residual stress highly depends on the types of electrolyte solution. In case of perchloric system, electrolytic abrasion removed 23% of residual stress. Through removal of burrs and reducing residual stress, the reliability of lead frame was substantially improved.

Effects of Sand Blasting on TiAlN Coating on WC Hard Metal Alloy Tip (WC위 TiAlN 코팅층에 미치는 Sand Blasting 처리의 영향)

  • The effect of the sand blasting before TiAlN coating in the manufacture of WC hard metal alloy tips have been studied. For four different tips, according to the status of processing of the sand blasting and the coating, residual stress measurement by X-ray diffraction and several tests for mechanical properties have been conducted. The results suggest that there was no difference in static mechanical properties, such as hardness, surface roughness and elastic modulus, between two coatings. Furthermore, compressive residual stress was generated equally on their surfaces. Additionally, the compressive residual stress in substrate WC was found to increase greatly when subjected to sand blasting treatment. However, the compressive residual stress decrease after coating regardless of sand blasting treatment. Nevertheless, it is confirmed that the compressive residual stress generated in the coating after sand blasting is less than that in the non-sandblasting coating. This was attributed to the plastic deformation occurring in the WC substrate during coating after sand blasting. In contrast to the scratch test results, sand blasting was assumed to have a negative effect on the adhesion between the coating and substrate. This is because there is a high possibility of microcracks due to plastic deformation in the WC substrate under the coating after sand blasting.
