  • Recently, due to the rapid spread and continuation of COVID-19, customer demand for health and hygiene has increased, requiring the development of new products that express antiviral and antibacterial properties. In particular, viruses are much smaller in size than bacteria and have a fast propagation speed, making it difficult to kill. POSCO has developed eco-friendly PCM color coated steel sheets with excellent antiviral properties by introducing inorganic composite materials to the color coating layer on the surface of Zn-Al-Mg alloy plated steels. The virus is not only destroyed by adsorption of metal ions released from the surface of the coating film, but is also further promoted by the generation of reactive oxygen species by the reaction of metal ions and moisture. As a result of evaluating the developed products under the International Standard Evaluation Act, the microbicidal activity was 99.9% for viruses, and 99.99% for bacteria and 0% fungi. In particular, excellent results were also shown in the durability evaluation for life cycle of the product. The developed product was applied as a wall of school classrooms and toilets and ducts for building air conditioning, resulting in excellent results. Developed products are being applied for construction and home appliances to practice POSCO's corporate citizenship.

  • Photocatalytic oxidations of benzene gas using the closed system (batch reactor) were induced to determine its by-products and investigate the effect of humidity and oxygen concentration on their generation. The study was able to identify 11 gaseous by-products: 2-methylpropene, acetaldehyde, acetone, pentane, methylcyclobutane, methylcyclopentane, cyclohexane, 2,3-dimethylbutane, 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane, and hexane. All the by-products were saturated hydrocarbons, which are less toxic than benzene and were probably formed through hydrogenation reaction on the photocatalytic surface. The photocatalytic oxidation of benzene under higher humidity produced less by-products. However, the amount of acetone released increased with higher humidity and oxygen concentration.

  • Campylobacteriosis is a common cause of gastrointestinal disease. In this study, we suggest a general strategy of applying gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in colorimetric biosensors to detect Campylobacter in chicken carcass. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was utilized for the amplification of the target genes, and the thiolated PCR products were collected. Following the blending of colloid AuNPs with PCR products, the thiol bound to the surface of AuNPs, forming AuNP-PCR products. The PCR products had a sufficient negative charge, which enabled AuNPs to maintain a dispersed formation under electrostatic repulsion. This platform presented a color change as AuNPs aggregate. It did not need additional time and optimization of pH for PCR amplicons to adhere to the AuNPs. The specificity of AuNPs of modified primer pairs for mapA from Campylobacter jejuni and ceuE from Campylobacter coli was activated perfectly (C. jejuni, p-value: 0.0085; C. coli, p-value: 0.0239) when compared to Salmonella Enteritidis and Escherichia coli as non-Campylobacter species. Likewise, C. jejuni was successfully detected from artificially contaminated chicken carcass samples. According to the sensitivity test, at least 15 ng/μL of Campylobacter PCR products or 1×103 CFU/mL of cells in the broth was needed for the detection using the optical method.

  • Acid mine drainage occurs when sulfide minerals are exposed to an oxidizing environment. The objective of this study was to inhibit the oxidation of pyrite by applying various coating agent such as $KH_2PO_4$, MgO and $KMnO_4$ over its surface as an oxidation inhibitors. Experiments were conducted for 8 days to test the feasibility of oxidation inhibitors. The optimal condition of coating agent for standard pyrite and IK mine was the combination of 0.01M $KH_2PO_4$, 0.01M NaOAc and 0.01M NaClO. Otherwise, for YD mine the combination of 0.01M $KMnO_4$, 0.01M NaOAc and 0.01M NaClO. The $SO_4^{2-}$ reduction efficiency of pyrite, IK and YD mine samples was 70, 92 and 84%, respectively. For 8 days, no significant increase of $SO_4^{2-}$ from pyrite sample coated with inhibitor was observed. The pH of solution remains in between 4 to 6 for the reaction conditions.

  • Maillard reaction products (MRPs) added into a culture and the resultant bacterial growth were investigated using response surface methodology. The coefficients of determination $(R^{2})$ of response surface regression equations for bacteria were 0.9544 and 0.9578 in Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus natto, respectively. The MRPs produced at higher reaction temperature and for longer reaction time showed greater antimicrobial effect for Bacillus subtilis. Especially, the MRPs produced at temperature above $150^{\circ}C$ for 8 to 12 hrs showed the strongest antimicrobial effect. The MRPs produced at lower reaction temperature and for shorter reaction time showed greater microbial growth effect for Bacillus natto, but those produced at the reaction temperature higher than $160^{\circ}C$ showed the greatest antimicrobial effect. In the ridge analysis, the growth of Bacillus subtilis was the most significantly inhibited in the presence of MRPs prepared at $159.10^{\circ}C$ and pH 12.21 for 9.67 hrs, and the growth of Bacillus natto was the most significantly inhibited in the presence of MRPs prepared at $169.94^{\circ}C$ and pH 9.66 for 9.22 hrs.

  • High Temperature-cooking conditions of cultured fishes(loach, crucian carp, bastard halibut, and jacopever) were optimized by response surface methodology(RSM), and plastein products were prepared using enzymatic hydrolysis. Four models were proposed with regard to effects of time(t), temperature(T), and water/fish meat (w/f) ratio on the amount of 0.3M TCA soluble fractions. The model coefficients were ranged from p<0.0001 for jacopever to p<0.0433 for bastared halibut. Cooking conditions for 60% hydrolysis were optimized at 1) 14$0^{\circ}C$ except for crucian carp(136$^{\circ}C$); 2) 10.08 hours(loach), 7.25 hours(crucian carp), 9.85 hours(ba-stard harlibut), and 9.37 hours(iacopever); 3) 1:1(w/f) ratio except for the crucian carp(1.1:1). When protein hydrolyzates were employed for the plastein synthesis, optimum plastein-reaction conditions were determined to be pH 9.0 with chymotrypsin for the loach and crucian carp hydrolyzates, pH 9.0 with papain for the bastard halibut hydrolyzate, and pH 11.0 with trypsin for the jacopever hydrolyzate. Plastein reaction could be performed in water at concentration up to 20%(w/f).

  • In this study, we carried out an investigation of the etching characteristics (etch rate, selectivity to $SiO_2$ and $HfO_2$) of TiN thin films in the $CH_4$/Ar inductively coupled plasma. The maximum etch rate of $274\;{\AA}/min$ for TiN thin films was obtained at $CH_4$(80%)/Ar(20%) gas mixing ratio. At the same time, the etch rate was measured as function of the etching parameters such as RF power, Bias power, and process pressure. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed an efficient destruction of the oxide bonds by the ion bombardment as well as showed an accumulation of low volatile reaction products on the etched surface. Based on these data, the ion-assisted chemical reaction was proposed as the main etch mechanism for the $CH_4$ containing plasmas.

  • The concrete pavement of the Seohae Highway in Korea has suffered from serious distress, only four to seven years after construction. Deterioration due to Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) has seldom been reported per se in Korea, because the aggregate used for the cement concrete has been considered safe against alkali-silica reaction so far. The purpose of this study is to examine the deterioration caused by an alkali-silica reaction of concrete pavement in Korea. The investigation methods included visual inspection and Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN) analysis of surface cracks, coring for internal cracks, stereo microscopic analysis, scanning electronic microscope (SEM) analysis, and electron dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) analysis. The results are presented as follows: the crack pattern of the concrete pavement in Korea was longitudinal cracking, map cracking or D-cracking. Local areas of damage were noticed four to five years after construction. The cracks started from edges or joints and spread out to slabs. The most intensive cracking was observed at the intersection of the transverse and longitudinal joints. Where cracking was the most intense, pieces of concrete and aggregate had spalled away from top surface and joint interface area. The progress of deterioration was very fast. The reaction product of alkali-silica gel was clearly identified by its generally colorless, white, or very pale yellow hue seen through a stereo optical microscopy. The typical locations of the reaction product were at the interface between aggregate and cement paste in a shape of a rim, within aggregate particles in the cracks, and in the large void in the cement paste. Most of the white products were found at interface or internal aggregates. SEM and EDX analysis confirmed that the white gel was a typical reaction product of ASR. The ASR gel in Korea mainly consisted of Silicate (Si) and Potassium (K) from the cement. The crack in the concrete pavement was caused by ASR. It seems that Korea is no longer safe from alkali-silica reaction.

  • A commercially pure Ti(CP-Ti) and Ti-25wt%Pd alloy for dental applications were cast into a phosphate-bonded Al$_2$ $O_3$/ $SiO_2$ investment mold and the surface of the casting specimens were investigated by means of SEM/EDS, XRD and XPS. The addition of 25wt%Pd in CP-Ti showed a moderate mold reaction owing to the considerable lowering of melting point. XRD analysis of the investment after burn-out treatment revealed that it consisted essentially of $SiO_2$, Al$_2$ $O_3$, P$_2$O$\_$5/, Mg$_3$(P $O_4$)$_2$, AlP $O_4$, Mg$_2$ $SiO_4$, MgAl$_2$ $O_4$ The mold reaction products were Ti$\_$5/Si$_3$ and Ti $O_2$ in case of CP-Ti casting and Ti $O_2$ and SiO$\_$x/ in case of Ti-25wt% Pd casting.
