  • Cam rack pinion (CRP) system which consists of cam rack and roller pinion transforms the rotation motion into linear one. The roller pinion has the plurality of rollers and meshes with its conjugated cam rack. The exact tooth profile of the cam rack and the non-undercut condition to satisfy the required performance have been proposed by introducing the profile shift coefficient. The load stress factors are investigated by varying the shape design parameters to predict the gear surface fatigue limit which is strongly related to the gear noise and vibration at the contact patch. The results show that the pitting life can be extended significantly by increasing the profile shift coefficient.

  • In this paper, a new nano/micro-mechanical processing test machine was developed. This new test machine, which is based on the principle of the scanning force controlled probe microscope, can realize nano/micro-mechanical machining and in-process profile measurement. Experimental results of nano/micro indentation and scratching show that the controllable cutting depth of the test machine can be controlled by PZT actuator. Profile measurement of the machined surface has also been performed by using the test machine and a conventional AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy). A good agreement of the two measurement results have been achieved.

  • Simplified model of slide-fed curtain coating flow has been developed and tested in this study. It rests on the sheet profile equations for curtain thickness in curtain flow and its trajectory derived by the integral momentum balance approach of Higgins and Scriven (1979) and Kistler (1983). It also draws on the film profile equation of film thickness variation in flow down a slide. The equations have been solved in finite difference approximation by Newton iteration with continuation. The results show that how inertia (Reynolds number), surface tension (capillary number), inclination angle of the slide, and air pressure difference across the curtain affect sheet trajectory and thickness profile. It has been revealed that approximate models can be useful to easily analyze coating flow dynamics without complex computations, giving qualitative agreement with full theory and with experiment.

  • In this paper, It does the profile measurement of the cam of diesel engine SOHC of the actual object. It uses the measurement of run-out method. This method is that the surface of the object is measured by the sensor when the object rotate, and calculated and displayed by the computer the signal which acquired by sensor. When we acquire the signals, we have two error because of motion and contacting between cam and probe. In this paper, we compensate the motion error while simply liner equation. And we have a solution that we change the figure of probe when we have a contacting error. We compared the data measuring on developed automatic cam profile measuring system with the data measured on CMM.

  • The pin-gear drive is a special form of fixed-axle gear mechanism. A large wheel with cylindrical pin teeth is called a pinwheel. As pinwheels are rounded, they have a simple structure, easy processing, low cost, and easy overhaul compared with general gears. They are also suitable for low-speed, heavy-duty mechanical transmission and for occasions with more dust, poor lubrication, etc. This paper introduces a novel slewing ring bearing with an external pinwheel gear set (e-PGS). First, we consider the exact cam pinion profile of the e-PGS with the introduction of a profile shift. Then, the contact stresses are investigated to determine the characteristics of the surface fatigue by varying the shape design parameters. The results show that the contact stresses of the e-PGS can be lowered significantly by increasing the profile shift coefficient.

  • The three-dimensional profile of a solder fillet is predicted by minimizing the surface tension and gravity energies of the solder joint using finite element modeling. Geometric complexity stemming from the inclined plane of the gullwing lead is resolved by employing three element types. These element types are used to describe the joint profile formed on the vertical, inclined and interfacial planes. The predicted solder joint profiles show good agreements with the experimental data provided that the solder volume is adjusted considering the wicking effects. Effects of the pad length, inclined lead angle and solder volume on joint profiles are also investigated.

  • The subsurface stress field beneath the roller's contacting surface due to the contact pressure in lubricating condition has been calculated. Main purpose of this study in view of engineering is to prove the validity of the numerical profile roller presented by Koo et al. The Love's rectangular patch solution was used to obtain the subsurface stress field. The stress field of the numerical profile roller was compared with the one of the existing dub-off profile roller The analysis results show reduced subsurface stresses for the numerical profile roller.

  • The present study aims to illuminate the vertical velocity profile of outer region of open-channel flow. Two sets of experiments were performed with PIV and propeller velocimeter. The first set was conducted to investigate the effect of bed roughness on the velocity distribution. The second set of experiments was carried out to find the effect of the Froude number on the velocity profile under the same bed roughness. The results reveal that the wake-law fits well with the experimental data from the bottom to the depth of maximum velocity, but it deviates from the experimental data above the maximum velocity point due to velocity-dip phenomenon, and that the velocity profile of the outer region is more influenced by the Froude number than the roughness. It is also shown that both the velocity difference between maximum velocity and surface velocity and the ratio of the average velocity to surface velocity become larger as the Froude number increases.

  • A roller pinion gear (RPG) system composed of either a pin or a roller and its conjugated cam gear can improve the gear endurance from that of a conventional gear system by reducing the sliding contact while increasing the rolling motion. In this paper, we first proposed the exact cam gear profile and the self-intersection condition obtained when the profile shift coefficient is introduced. Then, we investigated the Hertzian contact stresses and the load stress factors while the varying the shape design parameters to predict the gear surface fatigue life, which is strongly related to the gear noise and vibration at the contact patch. The results show that the pitting life can be extended significantly by increasing the profile shift coefficient.

  • In this paper, a modified Alford loop antenna for on-body communication system is proposed. The proposed antenna operating in the ISM band is designed with consideration of human body effect. One of advantages of the Alford loop antenna structure is low-profile, however the Alford loop antenna is not suitable for on-body devices since it does not have a ground plane for other electronic part of on-body system and requires balanced feeding structure. To be embedded on on-body devices, the proposed antenna is design with the unbalanced feed structure and ground. The performance of the proposed antenna is simulated and measured when it is placed on the human body phantom to consider the effect of the human body. The proposed antenna a 10 dB return loss bandwidth over the ISM band and monopole-like radiation pattern with low-profile. The antenna has the surface of appropriate for on-body communication environment.
