Low temperature plasma treatment with different gases and rf powers were performed to improve the adhesion strength between polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) and electroless deposited copper. According to the research, $H_2$ plasma having hydrogen radical was more effective in surface polarity modification than $O_2$ plasma due to the defluorination reaction. However, surface roughness of PTFE was more increased with $O_2$ than $H_2$ plasma. PTFE treated with $120W-O_2$ plasma and $250w-H_2$ plasma, consecutively showed rougher surface than single step $250w-H_2$ plasma treated one and more hydrophilic than single step $120W-O_2$ plasma treated one. And it showed 5B tape test grade, which is better adhesion property than 1B or 3B obtained by single step plasma treatment. In addition, adhesion strength between PTFE and Cu deposit is also deeply affected by residual water on its interface.

Automatic magnetic abrasive polishing (MAP), which can be applied after machining of a mold on a machine tool without unloading, is very effective for finishing a free-form surface such as a complicated injection mold. This study aimed to improve the efficiency of MAP of a non-ferrous mold surface. The magnetic array table and control of the electromagnet polarity were applied in the MAP of a free-form surface. In this study, first, the magnetic flux density on the mold surface was simulated to determine the optimal conditions for the polarity array. Then, the MAP efficiency for polishing a non-ferrous mold surface was estimated in terms of the change in the radius of curvature and the magnetic flux density. The most improved surface roughness was observed not only in the upward tool path but also in the working area of larger magnetic flux density.

Recently, UV(ultra-violet rays) camera has attracted a great deal of interest from the view point of easy judgement in inspections and diagnoses of the safety of power equipment. Especilly, UV camera is applied the inspection of UV with corona discharge. One of the most important and difficult problems is the basic research of filter design, materials and corona discharge. In this paper, we will report on the UV generation, corona pulse count and the polarity effect of positive and negative DC surface discharge in air. Also, corona discharge characteristics are analyzed using prototype UV camera of Korea. UV generation and corona pulse count due to surface discharge in positive needle is higher than that of negative needle.
In this work, the effect of a direct oxyfluorination on surface and mechanical interfacial properties of PAN-based carbon fibers is investigated. The changes of surface functional groups and chemical composition of the oxyfluorinated carbon fibers are determined by FT-IR and XPS measurements, respectively. ILSS of the composites is also studied in terms of oxyfluorination conditions. As a result, FT-IR exhibits that the carboxyl/ester groups (C=O) at 1632 $cm^{-1} and hydroxyl group (O-H) at 3450 $cm^{-1} are observed in the oxyfluorinated carbon fibers. Especially, the oxyfluorinated carbon fibers have a higher O-H peak intensity than that of the fluorinated ones. XPS result also shows that the surface functional groups, including C-O, C=O, HO-C=O, and C-$F_x$ after oxyfluorination are formed on the carbon fiber surfaces, which are more efficient and reactive to undergo an interfacial reaction to matrix materials. Moreover, the formation of C-$F_x$ physical bonding of the carbon fibers with fluorine increases the surface polarity of the fibers, resulting in increasing ILSS of the composites. This is probably due to the improvement of interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix resins.

In order to analyse the degradation mechanism of polymer materials for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to high temperature and ultraviolet rays. Then, thedegradation process was evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface potential decay, and polarity effect respectively. Especially, the analysis of surface degradation phenomena by corona charging method showed the exact correlation with the result of chemical properties. Therefore we can confirm that the application of corona charging method on the identification of degradation process is very useful. If this method is usedin degradation studies on the polymer surface, it will be more effective on the surface analysis of polymer insulators. With corona charging method and chemical spectrum analysis, it was possible concretely to define degradation process on the polymer surface exposed at the situation of different environmental conditions.
It was observed that the growth rates are different each other in the opposite direction along c-axis due to the crystal polarity. In according to the calculation based on diffusional equations with consideration of the electrical polarization and the surface charge, the difference of growth rates could be explained. Some experiments were compared with this kinetic explanation.

The diluted PMMA treated $SiO_2$ films as an passivation materials for semiconductor devices was researched by using the FTIR spectra. The diluted PMMA solution with various ratios changed the surface of $SiO_2$ film as the hydrophilic, hydrophobic or hybrid type properties. The sample 7 with little carbon content showed dramatically the chemical variation by the FTIR spectra analysis. Beacuse the little carbon with electrons decreased the polarity and surface energy on the $SiO_2$ film, and then became a stable bonding structure and decreased the leakage current. The FTIR spectra can define the detail variation due to the chemical reaction on the organic thin film, and help to research the characteristic of the organic materials.

In this paper, it is attempted to distinguish the charged particles and to judge the polarity by the use of Thermally Stimulated Current(TSC) and Temperature Gradient Thermally Stimulated Surface Potential Measurement(TG-TSSP)with experimental insulation material XLPE-EVA for power cables which is made by blending cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) and ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer(EVA). In addition, it is performed to investigate the effect of EVA blending. From the experimental results, it is known that for the case of XLPE-EVA blended experimental material, the generation of space charged electric field is not obtained in the high temperature region due to the obatruction of the injection of trapping carrier by the electron and the positive hole.
It is well known that the membrane permeation in pervaporation is governed by both the chemical nature of the membrane material and the physical structure of the membrane and also the separation can be achieved by differences in either solubility, size or shape. The solubility of the penerrant in the polymeric membrane can be described qualitively by applying the Hildebrand relation [1] which relates the energy of mixing of the penerrant and the polymer material. Froehling et al. have tried to predict the swelling behavior of polymers for the systems of polyvinylchloride(PVC)-toluene-methanol, PVC-trichloroethylene-nitromethane and PVC-n-butylacetate-nitromethane[2]. The former two systems which do not show the donor/acceptor interactions upon mixing showed the successful results[2]. In addition to this technique, there are several other possible approaches to predict the swelling behaviors of polymers, such as the surface thermodynamic approach[3, 4], the comparison of the membrane polarity with the solvent polarity in terms of Dimroth's solvent polarity value[5].
Color sensor systems based on M13 bacteriophage are being considerably researched. Although many studies on M13 bacteriophage-based chemical sensing of TNT, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and antibiotics have been undertaken, the fundamental physical and chemical properties of M13 bacteriophage-based nanostructures require further research. A simple M13 bacteriophage-based colorimetric sensor was fabricated by a simple pulling technique, and M13 bacteriophage was genetically engineered using a phage display technique to exhibit a negatively charged surface. Arrays of structurally and genetically modified M13 bacteriophage that can determine the polarity indexes of various alcohols were found. In this research, an M13 bacteriophage-based color sensor was used to detect various types of alcohols, including methanol, ethanol, and methanol/butanol mixtures, in order to investigate the polarity-related property of the sensor. Studies of the fundamental chemical sensing properties of M13 bacteriophage-based nanostructures should result in wider applications of M13 bacteriophage-based colorimetric sensors.
