  • The influence of oxygen plasma and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) treatment of $SiO_2$ on the patterning of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is presented. A significant difference in surface energies between plasma treated and OTS treated $SiO_2$ was noted. Such heterogeneous surface energy guides PEDOT:PSS to wet and spread on the wettable region and to dewet and retract from other regions.

  • This study aimed to develop ITO(Indium Tim Oxide) tin films ablation with a pulsed type KrF excimer laser required for the electrode patterning application in flat panel display into small geometry on a large substrate are. The threshold fluence for ablating ITO on glass substrate is about 0.1 J/㎠. And its value is much smaller than that using 3 .sup rd/ harmonic Nd:YAG laser. Through the optical microscope measurement the surface color of the ablated ITO is changed into dark brown due to increase of surface roughness and transformation of chemical composition by the laser light. The laser-irradiated regions were all found to be electrically isolating from the original surroundings. The XPS analysis showed that the relative surface concentration of Sn and In was essentially unchanged (In:Sn=5:1)after irradiating the KrF excimer laser. Using Al foil made by 2$\^$nd/ harmonic Na:YAG laser, the various ITO patterning is carried out.

  • Femtosecond laser ablation of ultrathin polymer films on quartz glass using laser pulses of 100 fs and centered at ${\lambda}=400nm$ wavelength has been investigated for nanometer precision thin film patterning. Single-shot ablation craters on films of various thicknesses have been examined by atomic force microscopy, and beam spot diameters and ablation threshold fluences have been determined by square diameter-regression technique. The ablation thresholds of polymer film are about 1.5 times smaller than that of quartz substrate, which results in patterning crater arrays without damaging the substrate. In particular, at a $1/e^2$ laser spot diameter of $0.86{\mu}m$, the smallest craters of 150-nm diameter are fabricated on 15-nm thick film. The ablation thresholds are not influenced by the film thickness, but diameters of the ablated crater are bigger on thicker films than on thinner films. The ablation efficiency is also influenced by the laser beam spot size, following a $w_{0q}{^{-0.45}}$ dependence.

  • Neuron-on-a-Chip technology is based on advanced neuronal culture technique, surface micropatterning, microelectrode array technology, and multi-dimensional data analysis techniques. The combination of these techniques allowed us to design and analyze live biological neural networks in vitro using real neurons. In this review article, two underlying technologies are reviewed: Microelectrode array technology and Neuronal patterning technology. There are new opportunities in the fusion of these technologies to apply them in neurobiology, neuroscience, neural prostheses, and cell-based biosensor areas.

  • In this study, the tribology of laser patterned DLC thin film was studied. DLC thin films were coated by RF-PECVD to improve the durability of tungsten carbide (WC) materials. DLC thin films have high hardness and low friction characteristics. Dot and line patterning was processed on the surface of DLC thin film with femtosecond laser, and the coefficient of friction was improved. As a result of ball on disk abrasion test, the hardness and friction coefficient of DLC thin films were much better than that of WC material. The friction coefficient of DLC thin film with dot patterning and line patterning showed better results. The excellent performance of the laser patterned DLC coating is appeared to reduce the coefficient of friction due to the reduction of surface contact area.

  • Some living thingsuse micro- or nano- structures for living in nature. Scientists and engineers made efforts to mimic them, and they succeeded in making new types of applications. They used 'Namib desert beetle' to self-filling device by moisture harvesting and 'lotus leaf' to self-cleaning device by water repelling. 'Namib desert beetle' and lotus leaf have micro-patterns on their surface, which consists of hydrophobic or hydrophilic materials [1]. Moreover, micro-patterns on the surface make self-filling or self-cleaning property enhanced because of the surface roughness. Surface roughness enhances wettability [2]. Micro-pattern is a significant factor to make the surface be functional, so we want to make new types of functional surface by micro-patterning. In this work,we make several functional micro-patterns (radial, line, and dot arrays) using maskless lithography and analyze the characteristics of each micro-pattern. In order to analyze and understand surface characteristics, micro-patterns with varying sizes are investigated. All experiments are proceeded on mr-DWL5 photo resists coated on silicon wafers in same condition. All the experiments have demonstrated good performances about hydrophobic or hydrophilic property corresponding to their material and structural combinations. In radial micro-pattern, although the surface is flat, water drops on hydrophilic radial pattern can be convergent to a middle point and water drops on hydrophobic radial pattern can be divergent from the middle point. In line array micro-pattern, water drops can roll off along only one direction in parallel with the line arrays. Such phenomena might be mainly caused by the local change of surface roughness. From these results, controlling the movement and direction of water drops is made feasible without introducing a slope, which can potentially be used for new types of applications.

  • Femtosecond laser-induced nano-patterning of an Al surface coated on a slide glass is reported in this paper. It was found that the period of the laser-induced nano-patterning was much dependent on the incident laser power and pulse number. Through finely adjusting the laser power and pulse number, uniform nano-patterns could be formed on the Al surface. It is based on the interference of the incident laser beam with some form of a surface scatted electromagnetic wave. It was also found that an Al oxide layer played an important role in forming the nano-patterning on the Al surface.

  • The present study addresses a direct patterning process on a plastic film using ultrasonic vibration energy. In this process, a tool horn containing micro-patterns is attached to an ultrasonic power supply, and is used with ultrasonic vibration to replicate micro-patterns on the surface of a plastic film. To improve the replication characteristics of the micro-patterns, the effect of the die shape of the ultrasonic patterning process was investigated with respect to the flow direction control. Finite element analyses were performed to predict the flow characteristics of the polymer with variations in die design parameters. Experiments were conducted using the optimally-designed die, from which it was possible to attain much improved pattern replication.
