  • This study is to do with the synthesis of glycidyl succinate cationic gemini surfactant. The gemini surfactant was synthesized with using 2-methyl disodium succinate, epichlorohydrine and N,N-dimethyl dodecyl amine. The target material was confirmed by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR and was tested their properties. Surface active properties such as surface tension, evaluated cmc, emulsing properties, foaming properties were measured respectively at given conditions. The surface tensions for the aqueous solution of gemini surfactant were 33~34 dyne/cm and their cmc values evaluated by surface tension method were $10^{-4}{\sim}10^{-3}mol/L$. Emulsing properties of gemini surfactant was better in organic solvent and foaming power was confirmed good stability.

  • To verify the fate and transport of engineered nanoparticles (ENP), it is essential to understand its interactions with organic matter. Previous research has shown that dissolved organic matter (DOM) can increase particle stability through steric repulsion. However, the majority of the research has been focused on model organic matter such as humic or fulvic acids, lacking the understanding of organic matter found in field conditions. In the current study, organic matter was sampled from wastewater treatment plants to verify the stability of engineered nanoparticles (ENP) under field conditions. To understand how different types of organic matter may affect the fate of ENP, wastewater was sampled and separated based on their size; as small organic particular matter (SOPM) and large organic particular matter (LOPM), and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Each size fraction of organic matter was tested to verify their effects on nano-zinc oxide (nZnO) and nano-titanium oxide (nTiO2) stability. For DOM, critical coagulation concentration (CCC) experiments were conducted, while sorption experiments were conducted for organic particulates. Results showed that under field conditions, the surface charge of the particles did not influence the stability. On the contrary, surface charge of the particles influenced the amount of sorption onto particulate forms of organic matter. Results of the current research show how the size of organic matter influences the fate and transport of different ENPs under field conditions.

  • In this study, the variation in surface morphology of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) thin films treated with a flow of acetone vapor assisted by nitrogen carrier gas was investigated. The CuPc nanorods with similar dimensions were well dispersed throughout the whole film surfaces after ~20 min. of treatment. However, the electronic absorption spectra only changed slightly, which indicates that molecular stacking was not altered during treatment. This treating method is simple and more advantageous compared to other solvent treating technologies such as mixed solvent spray treatment using organic solvents and water since it requires relatively mild treating conditions and does not need the presence of water.

  • A novel experimental set-up allowing quantitative determination of the adsorption capacity of gas molecules on a surface under high-vacuum conditions is introduced. Using this system, the toluene adsorption capacities of various carbon nanostructures were determined. We found that for a give surface area, the adsorption capacities of toluene of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and nanodiamonds were higher than that of activated carbon, which is widely used as an adsorbent of volatile organic compounds. The adsorption of toluene was reversible at room temperature.

  • The electronic behavior of a organic metal $(BEDT-TTE)_2$${Cu_5}{I_6}$ observed to be stable at low temperatures was examined by performing tight-binding band electronic structure calculations. The suppression of a metal-insulator tansition is likely to originate from its quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface with no nesting, in agreement with experiment.

  • Activated carbons (ACs) were treated by fluorination to improve the adsorption property of toluene gas among volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The pore characteristics and surface properties of these activated carbons were evaluated by BET and XPS and the adsorption property and removal efficiency of toluene gas was investigated by gas chromatography. The breakthrough time of fluorinated ACs was increased about 27% compared to that of untreated ACs when the toluene gas of 100 ppm was flowed at a flow rate of $300cm^3/min$. Fluorinated AC of 0.1 g adsorbent totally adsorbed toluene gas in 100 ppm to 100 % during the adsorption time in 19 h. These results can be used as a treatment technology or removal of carcinogenic materials such as toluene.

  • We have investigated the effectiveness of a gravure printing method for the fabrication of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and Organic Thin Film Transistor (OTFT). Printing of the organic layers was performed with a small-scale gravure coating machine, while the metallic layers were vacuum-evaporated. Devices with gravure-printed layers are at least comparable with the spin-coated devices. Effects of the solvent formulation and surface energy mismatch between the organic layer materials on the printed patterns and device performance were discussed. We will present the initial design and experimental data of OTFT fabricated by roll-type soft contact transfer process.

  • A working molecular model of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor is built based on the seven transmembrane helix structure of the recently refined bacteriorhodopsin atomic coordinates. A multiple copy simultaneous search (MCSS) method is used to search the pharmacophore of angiotensin on the surface of the receptor. Multiple copies of amino acid fragments and organic functional groups are scattered around the possible binding site and the time dependent. (omitted)

  • The titanate nanotube (TNT) was hydrothermally synthesized in 10 M NaOH aqueous solution at $150^{\circ}C$ for 72 h. Titanate nanotube with high surface area (292 $m^2$/g) is a good candidate as a support for catalytic reaction or organic synthesis. Palladium nanoparticles with an average size of $ca$. 3 nm were well dispersed onto the surface of TNT nanotubes. Palladium loaded catalyst with high surface area shows a highly efficient ${\alpha}$ alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols.
