This paper presents the representation and its shape analysis of face by features based on surface curvature estimation and proposed rotation vector of the human face. Curvature-based surface features are well suited to use for experimenting the 3D human face segmentation. Human surfaces are exactly extracted and computed with parameters and rotated by using active surface mesh model. The estimated features were tested and segmented by reconstructing surfaces from the face surface and analytically computing Gaussian (K) and mean (H) curvatures without threshold.

Surface engineering of polymers has a broad array of scientific and technological applications that range from tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, microfluidics and novel lab on chip devices to building mechanical memories, stretchable electronics, and devising tunable surface adhesion for robotics. Recent advancements in the field of nanotechnology have provided robust techniques for controlled surface modification of polymers and creation of structural features on the polymeric surface at submicron scale. We have recently demonstrated techniques for controlled surfaces of soft and relatively hard polymers using ion beam irradiation and plasma treatment, which allows the fabrication of nanoscale surface features such as wrinkles, ripples, holes, and hairs with respect to its polymers. In this talk, we discuss the underlying mechanisms of formation of these structural features. This includes the change in the chemical composition of the surface layer of the polymers due to ion beam irradiation or plasma treatment and the instability and mechanics of the skin-substrate system. Using ion beam or plasma irradiation on polymers, we introduce a simple method for fabrication of one-dimensional, two-dimensional and nested hierarchical structural patterns on polymeric surfaces on various polymers such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
Minor mergers leave behind long lived, but extremely faint and extended tidal features including tails, streams, loops and plumes. These act as a fossil record for the host galaxy's past interactions, allowing us to infer recent accretion histories and place constraints on the properties and nature of a galaxy's dark matter halo. However, shallow imaging or small homogeneous samples of past surveys have resulted in weak observational constraints on the role of galaxy mergers and interactions in galaxy assembly. The Rubin Observatory, which is optimised to deliver fast, wide field-of-view imaging, will enable deep and unbiased observations over the 18,000 square degrees of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), resulting in samples of potentially of millions of objects undergoing tidal interactions. Using realistic mock images produced with state-of-the-art cosmological simulations we perform a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the extended diffuse light around galaxies and galaxy groups down to low stellar mass densities. We consider the nature, frequency and visibility of tidal features and debris across a range of environments and stellar masses as well as their reliability as an indicator of galaxy accretion histories. We consider how observational biases such as projection effects, the point-spread-function and survey depth may effect the proper characterisation and measurement of tidal features, finding that LSST will be capable of recovering much of the flux found in the outskirts of L* galaxies at redshifts beyond local volume. In our simulated sample, tidal features are ubiquitous In L* galaxies and remain common even at significantly lower masses (M*>10^10 Msun). The fraction of stellar mass found in tidal features increases towards higher masses, rising to 5-10% for the most massive objects in our sample (M*~10^11.5 Msun). Such objects frequently exhibit many distinct tidal features often with complex morphologies, becoming increasingly numerous with increased depth. The interpretation and characterisation of such features can vary significantly with orientation and imaging depth. Our findings demonstrate the importance of accounting for the biases that arise from projection effects and surface-brightness limits and suggest that, even after the LSST is complete, much of the discovery space in low surface-brightness Universe will remain to be explored.

A workpiece with a large surface area is likely to be uneven due to form error and waviness. These geometric disturbances can cause inaccurate micro shapes to be formed when micro features are micro-grooved into the surface and cause the resulting workpiece to fail to function as desired. Thus, real-time measurement and compensation is required to guarantee the form accuracy of micro features while machining a workpiece with a large surface area. In this study, a method is suggested for real-time measurement of geometric error for the micro grooving of a large flat surface using a laser displacement sensor. The measurements are demonstrated for the workpieces with large surface areas and the experimental results show that the waviness and form error are well detected.
In this paper, a method for improving the defect classification performance in steel plate surface has been studied, based on DWT(discrete wavelet transform) and SVM(support vector machine). Surface images of the steel plate have low contrast, uneven, and featureless, so that the contrast between defect and defect-free regions is not discriminated. These characteristics make it difficult to extract the feature of the surface defect image. In order to improve the characteristics of these images, a synthetic images based on discrete wavelet transform are modeled. Using the synthetic images, edge-based features are extracted and also geometrical features are computed. SVM was configured in order to classify defect images using extracted features. As results of the experiment, the support vector machine based classifier showed good classification performance of 94.3%. The proposed classifier is expected to contribute to the key element of inspection process in smart factory.

This paper presents the on-line monitoring of the surface roughness in a face milling operation. The cut- ting force was used to monitor the surface roughness, since the insert run-outs not only deteriorate surface roughness but also change cutting force. AR model and band energy method were taken to extract the fea- tures from the cutting force. The features extracted from AR modelling are more accurate about the moni- toring than those from band energy method, whereas, the computing speed of the former is slow. An artifi- cal neural network discriminated the level of the surface roughness by using the features extracted via signal processing.

Micro features on the surface are well-known to have significant effects on optical or mechanical properties such as the optical interference, reflectance at the surface, contact angle, interfacial friction, etc. These surface micro features are increasingly employed to enhance the functionality of the applications in various application areas such as optical components for LCD or solar panel. Diverse surface features have been proposed and some of them are showing excellent efficiency or functionality, especially in optical applications. Most applications employing the micro features need manufacturing process for mass production and the injection molding and roll-to-roll forming, which are typical processes for mass production adopting polymeric materials, may be also preferred for micro patterned plastic product. Since the functionality or efficiency of the surface structures generally depends on the shape and the size of the structure itself or the array of the structures on the surface, it would be very important to replicate the features very precisely as being designed during the molding the micro pattern applications. In this paper, a series of research activities is introduced for roll-to-roll forming of micro patterned film including filling of patterns with UV curable resin, demolding of surface structures from the roll tool, control of surface energy and cure shrinkage of resin and dispose time and intensity of the UV light for curing of UV curable resin.
This paper presents an approach to segment an image into areas of surfaces, and to compute the surface properties from a gray-scale image in order to describe the surfaces for reconstruction of the 3-D shape of the objects. In general, an rigid body has several surfaces and many edges. But if it is not polyhedoron, it is necessary not only to describe the relation between surfaces, i.e. its line drawings but also to represent the surfaces' equations itself. In order to compute the surfaces' equation we use a probability of edge distribution. At first it is extracted edges from a gray-level image as much as possible. These are not only the points that maximize the change of an image intensuty but candidates which can be seemed to be edges. Next, other character of a surface (color, coordinates and image intensity) are extracted. In our study, we call the all feature of a surface as "texture", for example color, intensity level, orientation of an edge, shape of a surface and so on. These features of a surface on a pixel of an image plane are mapped to a point of the feature space, and segmented to each groups by cluster analysis on this space. These groups are considered to represent object surface in an image plane. Finally, the states of object surface in 3-D space are computed from distributional probability of local and overall statistical features of a surface, and from shape of a surface.a surface.
Polypropylene substrate with hair-like nano features(aspect $ratio{\sim}10$) on the surface is fabricated by injection molding process. Pure aluminum plate is anodized to have nano pore array on the surface and used as a stamper for molding nano features, The size and the thickness of the stamper is $30mm{\times}30mm$ and 1mm. The fabricated pore is about 120nm in diameter and 1.5 um deep. For molding of a substrate with nano-hair type of surface features, the stamper is heated up over $150^{\circ}C$ before the filling stage and cooled down below $70^{\circ}C$ after filling to release the molded part. For heating the stamper, stamper itself is used as a heating element by applying electrical power directly to each end of the stamper. The stamper becomes cooled down without circulation of coolant such as water or oil. With this new stamper heating method, nano hairs with aspect ratio of about 10 was successfully injection molded. We also found the heating & cooling process of the stamper is good for releasing of molded nano-hairs.
