  • In this study, we proposed a method for surface profiling aspheric lens molds using a precision displacement sensor with a spatial scanning mechanism. The precision displacement sensor is based on the confocal principle using a broadband light source, providing a 10 nm resolution over a 0.3 mm measurable range. The precision of the sensor, depending on surface slope, was evaluated via Allan deviation analysis. We then developed an automatic surface profiling system by measuring the cross-sectional profile of a lens mold. The precision of the sensor at the flat surface was 10 nm at 10 ms averaging time, while 200 ms averaging time was needed for identical precision at the steepest slope at 25 deg. When we compared the measurement result of the lens mold to a commercial surface profiler, we found that the accuracy of the developed system was less than 90 nm (in terms of 3 sigmas of error) between the two results.

  • In this paper, fluid movement of magnetic fluid which has free surface is investigated in a container subjected to a horizontal oscillation. Here, the vertical magnetic field is applied from the bottom of this container. The experiment is performed on the magnetic fluid in a rectangular and a cylindrical container and the effects of magnetic force exerted on the magnetic fluid are investigated on the resonance frequency and liquid surface displacement. The increase of magnetic field affects on the maximum resonance point and the liquid surface displacement. In result, it changes the amplitude of the surface wave and the period of sloshing fluid movement.

  • An elastomeric bushing which has been considered in this research is a device used in automotive suspension systems to reduce the forte transmitted iron the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is modeled at a hollow cylinder which is bonded to a solid metal shaft at its inner surface and a metal sleeve at its outer surface. Lianis constitutive equation for a nonlinear viscoelastic incompressible material is used to model the elastomeric material of the bushing. It is used to derive a force-displacement relation for axial response of the bushing. The displacement dependent force relaxation function for the bushing is obtained from the ramp displacement control tests with an extrapolation method. This is compared with the exact result obtained from the step displacement control test and the results are in very good agreement.

  • Three 3D nonlinear finite-element models are developed to study the behavior of concrete beams and plates with and without external reinforcement by fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP). All three models are formulated based upon the 3D theory of elasticity. The stress model is modified from the element developed by Ramtekkar, et al. (2002) to incorporate material nonlinearity in the formulation. Both transverse stress and displacement components are used as nodal degrees-of-freedom to ensure the continuity of both stress and displacement components between the elements. The displacement model uses only displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom. The transition model has both stress and displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom on one surface, and only displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom on the opposite surface. The transition model serves as a connector between the stress and the displacement models. The developed models are validated by comparing the results of the analyses with an existing experimental result. Parametric studies of the effects of the externally reinforced FRP on the load capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and concrete plates are performed to demonstrate the practicality and the efficiency of the proposed models.

  • In this study, the contactless measurement method with a optical displacement sensor(ODS, ADNS 9500) was proposed to overcome flaws in a rotary encoder based measurement under particular circumstances, such as a slippage and a case of little rotational inertia. The performance tests of the optical displacement sensor using data acquisition board and National Instruments's LabVIEW program were performed to accomplish accurate displacement measurements and the performance characteristics according to measurement direction, speed, acceleration, height and surface types were discovered through the repetitive tests. The experimental results indicate that, in order to get an accurate in-plane motion, the height(distance between the ODS and the target surface) has to be maintained at the range of 2.4 mm to 3.2 mm and the sensitivity(resolution) should be modified and applied to the formulae for displacement calculation, considering its measurement direction, speed and surface type.

  • In this study, the shapes of the wheel and rail are represented by using 3-dimensional surface functions with surface parameters and a 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis is presented. A whole numerical solution of wheel-rail contact at tread and flange including 2-point contacts can be achieved with the proposed numerical algorithm. Kinematic characteristics such as variances of vertical displacement and roll angle, and variance of wheel radius difference for arbitrary yaw and lateral displacement of wheelset, are determined for the KTX wheel-rail pair as an example. The condition of yaw and lateral displacement occurring 2-point contacts to analyze derailment are compared between standard and worn wheels. Differences of contact characteristics between curved and straight rails are also analyzed.

A bushing is a hollow cylinder, which is bonded to a solid steel shaft at its inner surface and a steel sleeve at its outer surface. The relation between the force applied to the shaft and the relative deformation of a bushing is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. A force-displacement relation for bushings is important for multibody dynamics numerical simulations. For the nonlinear viscoelastic axial response, Pipkin-Rogers model, the direct relation of force and displacement, has been derived from Lianis model and the sinusoidal input was used for Pipkin-Rogers model, and the affection of displacement with frequency change was studied with Pipkin-Rogers model.

  • Maxwell displacement current(MDC) measuring technique has been applied on the study of monolayers of fatty acid. The displacement current was generated from monolayers on the water surface by monolayer compression and expansion. Displacement current was generated when the area per molecule was about $130{\AA}^2$. MDCs were investigated in connection with monolayer compression cycles. It was found that the current pulses were generated over the entire range of molecular area, and the maximum of MDC appeared at the molecular area just before the initial rise of surface pressure in compression cycles. We investigated the change in absorption spectra of the fatty acid(8A5H) monolayer LB film due to cis-trans photoisomerization. It was found that the absorption spectrum of the 8A5H LB film was induce to photoisomerization by alternate irradiation with UV and visible light irradiation.

  • The displacement current measuring system used for detecting the dynamic behavior of monolayers at the air-water interface is described. It basically consists of a film balance, a pair of electrodes connected to each other through a sensitive ammeter. Here, one electrode is suspended in air and the other electrode is the water, With Maxwll-displacement-current-measuring method, the phase transitions of Poly(λ-benzyl- L-glutamate)(PBLG) on a water surface were detected, Displacement currents generated during the compression of monolayers of PBLG on the surface of water were investigated. As results, the displacement pick was generated when the area per molecule was about 15 $\AA$$^{2}$ in low pressure, and tit was generarted when the area per molecule about 27$\AA$$^{2}$ in high pressure.
