Quality of fresh ginger deteriorates rapidly during low temperature storage, and its storage life is short due to sprouting and microbial spoilage. The objectives of this research were to develop, using additives, a minced ginger product, which could maintain acceptable quality for over 30 days, and to investigate its quality changes during the cold storage. Storage stability of minced ginger product was investigated from the standpoint of the inhibition of brown discoloration, gas formation and liquid-solid separation. Fresh ginger was peeled and ground to produce minced ginger (control). Sodium bisulfite, L-cysteine, NaCl, sodium benzoate, modified starch, and/or xanthan gum were added to the control to minimize quality loss during storage, and to develop an optimum formula (A) of minced ginger. Samples were packed in Nylon/PE films, stored at $5^{\circ}C$, sampled at a 30-day interval, and subjected to quality evaluations. Changes in pH, surface color, gas formation, liquid-solid separation, contents of free amino acids, free sugars, organic acids, and fatty acids were determined. Gas formation was effectively inhibited in samples with sodium benzoate and/or NaCl. Samples with xanthan gum did not result in liquid-solid separation. L-Cysteine and sodium bisulfite were effective in controlling discoloration. pH decreased during storage in all samples, except sample A. Organic acid contents of all samples increased during storage, with lactic acid content showing the highest increase. Free amino acid content decreased with increasing storage time. Free sugar content of all samples decreased during storage. Sensory results showed sample A maintained acceptable quality until 90 days of storage. These results suggest that quality of minced ginger could be successfully maintained with the additions of selected additives for up to 90 days.

This study was done to evaluate whether vital bleaching agents could influence on the translucency of the bovine enamel. The anterior bovine teeth that were extracted one day before and without any gross discoloration were obtained and then were preserved in physiologic saline. 6 mm cylindrical tooth specimens were fabricated with diamond puncher perpendicularly on labial surface of bovine tooth. After embedded in transparent acrylic resin with labial surface being exposed, they were cut to a thickness of 1.2 mm with low speed diamond saw (Isomat, Buehler Co., Lake Bluff, IL, USA). They were smoothly ground to 1 mm thickness of enamel with sandpaper. 24 specimens were randomly divided into 3 groups and control group respectively. Opalescence (10% carbamide peroxide, Ultradent, South Jordan, USA), Rembrandt (10% carbamide peroxide, DenMat, USA) and Opalescence F (15% carbamide peroxide with fluoride, Ultradent, USA) were applied on labial sides of the bovine enamel for 7 days (bleaching agents were reapplied every 24 hours) and the opposite surface was contacted to cotton that soaked in distilled water. The control group was soaked in distilled water. Three stimulus value X, Y and Z were evaluated with colorimeter (Color ' Color Differencerneter, Model TC-6FX, Tokyo Denshoku Co., Japan) on the labial surface of all specimen three times on white and black background plate before the bleaching agents were applied and on 3rd, 5th and 7th day after applied. The degree of translucency was normally assessed by measuring the inverse property, opacity (contrast ratio). 10% Opalescence, 15% Opalescence-F, and control group showed no significant variation in the translucency of bovine enamel, However Rembrandt decreased the translucency of it (p < 0.01).
The storage quality of fresh buckwheat sprouts, as influenced by pretreatment and packaging within processing steps, was investigated to establish appropriate postharvest handling treatment for the commodity. After harvest, the sprouts were dipped in chlorine water (100 ppm), rinsed twice with clean water, pre-cooled with iced water, de-watered, and packed in plastic trays. Sprout samples taken from each processing step were stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 6 days to measure quality attributes. Viable cell counts of mesophilic aerobes and coliform bacteria were lower by about 1 log scale in the postharvest treated samples compared to an untreated control, although the initial microbial reduction due to the postharvest treatments was offset by cell growth during storage. All sprout samples showed a decrease of fresh weight by approximately 4% after 6 days of storage. However, moisture and soluble solid contents were maintained at the initial levels of the sprouts. No significant difference in surface color was observed among sample treatments. For sensory properties including discoloration, wilting, decay, and visual quality, there were no significant differences among sample treatments. The present results suggest that proper postharvest processing treatments can exert positive effects on extending the shelf-life of fresh buckwheat sprout.

The gray mold disease occurred on tuberous roots of yacon in storage facilities in Gangneung, Korea, in March 2010. Symptoms typically appeared as in the form of dark brown discoloration on the surface of tuberous roots and water-soaked brown lesions in cross sections of the affected portions. A total of five isolates of Botrytis sp. were obtained from the symptomatic portions. All isolates on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) produced abundant conidia which were pale brown, one-celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and $8.2{\sim}14.8{\times}6.5{\sim}9.9\;{\mu}m$ in size. Large numbers of round to irregular, smooth, black, hard sclerotia were produced on PDA over time. The optimal temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation of the fungal isolates was $20^{\circ}C$. On the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics, all the fungal isolates were identified as Botrytis cinerea. Pathogenicity test on host plants showed that the fungus could infect not only tuberous roots but also leaves and petioles of yacon. This is the first report on gray mold of yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) caused by Botrytis cinerea in Korea.
The Standing Buddha Statue in the Gwanchoksa temple consists of medium to coarse grained biotite granodiorite with dark grey color, and it has a week gneissosity along the pegmatite veins. The results of magnetic susceptibility and geochemical patterns of the host rock of Standing Buddha Statue and the basement rock suggest that both values are formed from the co-genetic magma with the same differentiation process. The CIAs of the basement rock and the Standing Buddha Statue are calculated to 51.43 and 50.86, and the WPIs are estimated 4.52 and 8.95, respectively. So the weathering potential from the host rock of Standing Buddha Statue and basement rock prove to be high. The Standing Buddha Statue is terribly damaged with physical weathering from deterioration and exfoliation, and are scattered with secondary pollutant and precipitate. Basement rock is also in danger of ground collapse because of irregularly developed discontinuity system. Most surface of Standing Buddha Statue is seriously discolored into yellowish brown and dark gray, or black precipitates are also formed. Moreover, it is heavily covered with crustose lichen, fungi and algae, or moss are also found. In order to control the influential factors with the complex deterioration of Standing Buddha Statue, it is needed to rearrange a site environments, and conservation scientific management is required to protect it from covering lichens, exfoliations and fractures.
Nondestructive deterioration diagnosis has been carried out for the former ore dressing plant of the Yongwha mine in Yeongyang (Registered Cultural Property No. 255). Deterioration rates about organic contaminant and soil of the upper part (7 to 13 layer) indicate higher than the lower part (1 to 6 layer) of the ore dressing plants. By contrast, deterioration rates such as crack, break out and discoloration of the lower part indicate very higher than the upper part. It is estimated that the plants of the lower part that mechanical and chemical process had been done for flotation were damaged severely by physicochemical weathering with reaction of concrete and chemical solution. As results of ultrasonic velocity measurement, average p-wave velocity of plants were measured 2,462m/s (compressive strength $529kgf/cm^2$). As for the analytical results of surface contaminants and soil compositions using P-XRF, they were identical with major elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe and As) of ore minerals from the Yongwha mine. Therefore, the ore dressing plant should be treated by phytoremediation with conservation because heavy metals could impinged upon plants and natural environment.

Clinical performance of resin-based composite material depends on case selection and on the proficiency of the operator. Especially, composite resin restoration on permanent first molar in children have more limitations clinically than adult patients according to stage of tooth eruption and patient's compliance. This study was designed to evaluate the clinical performance of posterior composite resin restoration in children after 5 years. 35 teeth of 16 patients who were received composite resin restoration on permanent first molar in Department of Pediatric dentistry, Pusan National University Hospital between January 2001 and December 2001 were evaluated based on Modified USPHS criteria. From the finding in this study, following conclusions can be made. 1. 6 teeth(17%) of 35 teeth was replaced, so 5-years survival rate of posterior composite resin restoration is 82.9%. 2. As results of each evaluation criteria, on color match, anatomic form, surface roughness, sensitivity/ discomfort, ideal A grade score was 86.2%, 93.1%, 86.2%, 86.2%, clinically accepted B grade score was 13.8%, 0%, 13.8%, 10.3%. On marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration, A grade score was 13.8%, 44.8% and B grade score was 79.3%, 34.5% and secondary caries rate was 20.7%. 3. 69.1% of teeth (20 teeth) was clinically accepted on all evaluation criteria.
The purpose of this study is to examine the structure and heat generation mechanism of low voltage switches used to turn on or off the power supply to an indoor lighting system and investigate how the fixtures and movable contacts of the switches are damaged depending on the types of energy sources in order to secure the judgment base for expected PL disputes. Based on the Korean Standard (KS) testing method for incombustibility, this study applied a general flame to the switch. In addition, current was supplied to the switch using the PCITS (Primary Current Injection Test System). The ambient temperature and humidity were maintained at $22{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and 40~60% respectively while performing the test. It is thought that the switch generated heat due to a defective connection of the wire and clip, insulation deterioration and defective contact of the movable contact, etc. The surface of the switch damaged by the general flame was uniformly carbonized. When the flame source was removed, the fire on the switch was extinguished naturally. From the result obtained by disassembling the switch carbonized by the general flame, it could be seen that fixtures and movable contacts remained in comparatively good shape but the enclosure, clip support, movable contact, indicating lamp, etc. showed carbonization and discoloration. In the case of the switch damaged by overcurrent, the clip connecting the wires, clip support, etc. showed almost no trace of damage, but the fixtures, movable contact, indicating lamp, etc. were severely carbonized. That is, the sections with high contact resistance were intensively damaged and showed a damage pattern indicating that carbonization progressed from the inside to the outside. Therefore, it is possible to judge the initial energy source by analyzing the characteristics of the carbonization pattern and the metal fixtures of damaged switches.
Studies were conducted to determine the effect of undersoil heating on growth and quality of turfgrasses including Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.‘Nuglade’), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.‘Accent’), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.‘Pixie’), and Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) in simulated athletic field during winter season in Korea. Mineral contents in clippings of turfgrasses grown at different soil mixtures and temperatures were also analyzed. Undersoil heating (approximately 20$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$) was effective in protecting turfgrasses except Korean lawngrass from freezing injury and discoloration of shoots due to extremely cold temperatures during midwinter. Among turfgrasses grown at undersoil heating zone, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass showed the highest clipping weights and chlorophyll contents, respectively. However, anthocyanin contents of shoots were higher in Kentucky bluegrass. There was little or no difference in clipping weights, chlorophyll contents, anthocyanin contents and greenness of shoots between turfgrasses grown at two soil mixtures composed of 80% sand+10% peat moss+10% soil (v/v/v) and 80% sand+20% pea moss (v/v). Contents of mineral K, Ca and Mg in clippings of cool-season turfgrasses were comparatively higher in a soil mixture composed of 80% sand+10% peat moss+10% soil, but little difference in contents of N and P was observed between two soil treatments. Results indicated that undersoil heating can improve quality of turf surface by thawing soil, melting snow, and maintaining shoot growth and greenness of turfgrasses in sports field during winter season.

This study was conducted to assess the occurrence and damages by thrips on greenhouse-cultivated fig in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. We identified the collected species as Thrips tabaci Lindeman, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, and F. intonsa Trybom. The density of thrips in the greenhouses during the summer months was monitored using yellow sticky traps; T. tabaci showed the highest density, followed by F. occidentalis and F. intonsa. The damages by thrips were characterized by stunted plant growth because of delayed discoloration of the pericarp, and development of rough fruit surface. Stereomicroscopic observation on the fruit flesh revealed the growth of gray mold at the damaged area, as well as the dead bodies and exuviae of thrips. The rates of fig fruit damages per month, were 18.2%, 9.7%, 2.9%, and 1.3% in July, August, September, and October, respectively.
