  • Accurate solar radiation data are fundamental to the design of HVAC systems and solar driven devices. Unfortunately, the total radiation data on a horizontal surface has been only reported by meteorological office. Consequently, there is interest in development of model to estimate the solar radiation data. Based on the statistically estimated TAC data which were obtained from measured hourly values collected over a period of ten years at Seoul, the solar radiation model was determined. Atmospheric transmittance for this model was presented in the form of polynominal.

  • A decrease in stratospheric ozone probably caused by chloroflurocarbons (CFCs) emissions, has been observed large parts of-the globe. It is generally accepted that if ozone levels in the stratosphere are depleted, greater amounts of shortwave ultraviolet radiationB (UVB) will reach the earth's surface, resulting in increased incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer. In this study, we evaluated several mathematical models, such as a power and an exponential model, and a geometric model considering the surface area of a human body part and ages for the prediction of Skin cancer incidence caused by exposure to the UVB radiation. These models basically estimated the risk of skin cancer based on those measurements of the local ozone in stratosphere and UVB. Both were measured at a part of Seoul with a Dobson ozone spectrometer and Robertson-Berger UV Biometer for 1995. As a result, we calculated the point estimation applying a biological amplification factor (BAF), UVB radiation and other factors. We used a Monte-Carlo simulation technique with assumption on the distribution of each considered factor. The sensitivity analysis of model by there components conducted using Gaussian sensitivity method. The annual integral of UVB radiation was 2275 MED (minimal erythema dose)/yr. Also, an estimate of the annual amount of UVB reaching the earth's surface at a korea's latitude and altitude was 3328 MED/yr. The values of the radiation amplification factor (RAF) were ranged from 0.9 to 1.5 in Seoul. To give the effective factors required to model the prediction of skin cancer incidence caused by exposure to the UVB radiation in Korea, we studied the pros and cons of above mentioned models with the application of those parameters measured in Seoul, Korea.

  • In this study, the effects of the surface topographical characteristics on the meteorological fields are examined in a mesoscale meteorlolgical model. We calculated the direct solar radiation using the illumination angle considering the inclination of topography and tried to find out its effect on meteorological fields. In above experiments, we selected two cases for the clear day and the cloudy day to show the effect of weather and represented the results for two cases. In the correction of the direct solar radiation, the results of two cases indicate that there are obvious differences on the steep Taeback and Soback mountains. And on the time-series analysis the east-facing slope of these mountains receives the more direct solar radiation about $10-60W/m^2$ in the morning hours but lesser in the afternoon hours than the horizontal surface while it is opposite on the west-facing slope. And the results mentioned above are more obvious at clear day. With the same analysis method, at clear day, the surface skin temperature is higher at all hours than that on horizontal surface on the both of slope. At cloudy and rainy day, the surface skin temperature on the east-facing slope is higher in the morning hours but lower in the afternoon hours than that on horizontal surface. But on the west-facing slope, it is higher at all hours than that on horizontal surface. In the two cases, the temperature considering the slope of surface is almost higher than that on the horizontal surface. The wind is stronger than that on the horizontal surface with increasing pressure gradient force according as increasing temperature gradient around the Taeback and the Soback mountains.

  • Space is full of energetic events emitting high-energy radiations which may be fatal to all living things unless protected. The present paper briefly describes high-energy photons and particles incident on Earth surface and their common properties toward living things. Role of radiation played in evolution of life and earth environment will be presented.

  • This study is on the experiment and prediction of the pipe noise due to the internal fluid. The vibration of pipe external surface and noise in air were measured according to the internal fluid velocity and pipe type. In the experiment, the vibration and noise level of the straight pipe and rounded pipes show that the vibration and noise level are almost same. The 900 mitred pipe shows the high vibration and noise level. In the prediction of noise due to the internal flow, the method using the pipe surface vibration and radiation efficiency shows good agreement with experimental result.

  • The radiation heat-transfer coefficient is generally used to calculate radiant heat exchange of heating space. The coefficient is evenly adopted in most cases, but it is not correct in actual cases. The purpose of this paper is to grasp the changing aspect of radiation heat-transfer coefficient needed for heating load calculation of radiant heating space. Surface temperatures are measured in an Ondol space, and the coefficients are derived and examined. Gebhart's Absorption Factor Method is used for the calculations of the rates of instantaneous radiant exchange in the room. As the result, it is confirmed that the coefficients are variant according to surface temperatures, and proper coefficients are needed for each of conditions.

  • A Numerical study on two-dimensional laminar natural convection with and without surface radiation in fully or partially open square cavity was performed. The cavity has one vertical heated wall facing a vertical opening and two horizontal insulated walls. The pressure boundary condition was applied to the opening instead of the velocity boundary condition. The results of this study showed that the increase of partition length decreased the convective and the radiative Nusselt numbers. It was also found that the increase of wall emissivity decreased the convective Nusselt numbers but increased the radiative Nusselt numbers.

  • The improved Green integral equation for the calculation of time-harmonic potentials in the radiation diffraction problem about a freely floating body in the presence of moderate or weak current is presented. The forward-speed Green function presented by Brard is used. The correct free surface boundary conditions on the physical free surface are employed as well as an appropriate boundary conditions on the non-physical inner free surface. The default in the existing Green integral equation as well as in the source integral equation is discussed in detail.

  • This study was intended to evaluate the surface dose and depth dose of according to the distance of the treatment room wall. High energy photon beams from linear accelerators produce large scattered radiation by various components of the treatment head, collimator and walls or objects in the treatment room including the patient. The scattered radiation measured by thermoluminescence dosimeter(TLD). Linear accelerators rotation center of the four walls(X) distance was measured to be 236, 272, 303, and 337 cm. The result of 100 cGy and 200 cGy of 6 MV photon irradiation, surface dose was 0.49, 0.83 mSv at 236 cm of the shortest distance to the wall, In 272 cm 0.41, 0.53 mSv, 303 cm in the 0.28, 0.57 mSv, and 337 cm distance from the wall in the 0.33, 0.76 mSv surface dose respectively. There was remarkable difference in the surface dose among the treatment room wall distance. The results of useful data in relation to stochastic effect for radiation therapy patients.

  • The corrosion degradation characteristics of the 12Cr alloy steel, which is widely used in fossil power plants as a turbine blade material, are evaluated nondestructively by use of the backward radiated Rayleigh surface wave. In order to evaluate corrosion degradation characteristics, we constructed automated system for the backward radiation, and the frequency dependency of the Rayleigh surface wave is investigated indirectly by measuring the angular dependency of the backward radiation of the incident ultrasonic wave in the specimens. The velocity of the surface wave decrease as the increase of the aging time in the backward radiation profile, which seems to result from the increase of the effective degrading layer thickness. And, amplitude of the surface wave increase as the aging time, which seems to result from the increase of the intergranular corrosion. The result observed in this study demonstrates high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for the nondestructive evaluation of the corrosion degradation characteristics of the aged materials.
