Finite Element Analysis of Heat Transfer Effects on Asphalt Pavement Heated by Pre-Heater Unit Used in Hot In-Place Recycling (유한요소해석을 통한 현장 가열 재활용 시공 장비의 가열판 용량에 따른 아스팔트 포장의 열전도성 평가)

  • PURPOSES: The national highways and expressways in Korea constitute a total length of 17,951 km. Of this total length of pavement, the asphalt pavement has significantly deteriorated, having been in service for over 10 years. Currently, hot in-place recycling (HIR) is used as the rehabilitation method for the distressed asphalt pavement. The deteriorated pavement becomes over-heated, however, owing to uncontrolled heating capacity during the pre-heating process of HIR in the field. METHODS: In order to determine the appropriate heating method and capacity of the pre-heater at the HIR process, the heating temperature of asphalt pavement is numerically simulated with the finite element software ABAQUS. Furthermore, the heating transfer effects are simulated in order to determine the inner temperature as a function of the heating system (IR and wire). This temperature is ascertained at $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$, and $800^{\circ}C$ from a slab asphalt specimen prepared in the laboratory. The inner temperature of this specimen is measured at the surface and five different depths (1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm) by using a data logger. RESULTS: The numerical simulation results of the asphalt pavement heating temperature indicate that this temperature is extremely sensitive to increases in the heating temperature. Moreover, after 10 min of heating, the pavement temperature is 36%~38% and 8%~10% of the target temperature at depths of 25 mm and 50 mm, respectively, from the surface. Therefore, in order to achieve the target temperature at a depth of 50 mm in the slab asphalt specimen, greater heating is required of the IR system compared to that of the gas. CONCLUSIONS : Numerical simulation, via the finite element method, can be readily used to analyze the appropriate heating method and theoretical basis of the HIR method. The IR system would provide the best heating method and capacity of HIR heating processes in the field.

  • Heating by RF wave is divided into dielectric heating and induction heating. Dielectric heating and induction heating from outside the body have the compensatory heating pattern. While surface fat layer is heated by dielectric heating, it is not heated by induction heating. While the peripheral part at the middle of the electrodes is not heated by dielectric heating, it is heated by induction heating. By the simultaneous application both modalities, heating pattern seems to be more uniform and improved. Computer simulation of Finite Element Method (FEM) using ANSYS was conducted to dielectric heating with the results of above-mentioned feature. Theoretical considerations by the uniform RF magnetic field in a cylinder and textbooks support the feature of the above-mentioned heating pattern of induction heating. Further computer simulation of FEM using ANSYS will be conducted to simultaneous application of dielectric heating and induction heating to verify and will be reported.

Polypyrrole-Coated Woven Fabric as a Flexible Surface-Heating Element

  • Polypyrrole (PPy) was coated sequentially by chemical and electrochemical methods on a woven fabric, giving rise to a fabric having high electrical conductivity. We investigated the effects of the preparation conditions on the various properties of the resulting fabric. The PPy-coated fabric with optimum properties was obtained when it was prepared sequentially by chemical polymerization at the elevated temperature of 100$^{\circ}C$ under a pressure of 0.9 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and then electrochemical polymerization with a 3.06 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ current density at 25 $^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs with the separator plate. The surface resistivity of the resulting fabric was as low as 5 Ω/$\square$ .The PPy-coated fabric prepared under the optimum conditions showed practically applicable heat generating property. When electrical power was supplied to the fabric using a commercial battery for a mobile phone (3.6 V, LGLl-AHM), the temperature of the fabric increased very quickly from room temperature to ca. 55 $^{\circ}C$ within 2 min and was maintained for ca. 80 min at that temperature. The heat generating property of the fabric was extremely stable, exhibiting similar behavior over 10 repeated cycles. Therefore, we suggest that the PPy-coated fabric in this study may be practically useful for many applications, including flexible, portable surface-heating elements for medical or other applications.

A Study on the Optimal Arrangement of Heating and Cooling Tubes for Uniform Temperature Distribution of Heat Transfer Surface (전열면 온도의 균일분포를 위한 냉각 및 가열관의 최적 배열에 관한 연구)

  • The temperature distributions inside molds with heating or cooling tubes were calculated using special boundary element method. This special boundary element method was employed in order to reduce the error for small diameter tubes. Calculated temperature was compared with results using finite element method. It was found that the current method becomes more accurate as tubes' diameter gets smaller. Optimal arrangement of tubes for uniform temperature distribution along specific surface was found. CONMIN program was employed for the optimization.

  • In the present study, an evaluation technology for heating channel layout was investigated in SMC molding system design. Conventional design rules of cooling channel in injection molding process were applied to the present work. Finite element thermal analysis with ANSYSTM was performed to evaluate the temperature distribution of mold surface. SMC mold was manufactured to test the effect of a proposed heating channel layout system on the temperature distribution of mold surface and infrared camera was applied to a measurement of temperature. It was shown that infrared camera application was possible in a measurement of temperature distribution on mold surface.

Development of a Low-power Walk-way for Anti-Icing (결빙 방지를 위한 저전력 갑판이동로 개발)

  • The walk-way means a passage installed on the deck of a ship so that a person can safely move under any circumstances. So, the walk-way has to maintain a temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ or more for anti/de-icing even at an ambient temperature of $-62^{\circ}C$, a temperature in polar region. At present, the walk-way with heating cable is used, but the anti/de-icing effect is insufficient due to low heat transfer efficiency. Also, it has a construction problem due to heavy weight. In this study, an walk-way with a CNT surface heating element is proposed for the high anti/de-icing effect and the heating value per unit volume. The international standard survey, conceptual design, and simulation for the structural safety and the heat transfer are performed for the development of the proposed walk-way. To enhance the performance, the case studies based on the simulation analysis are conducted. Finally, the final prototype, applying the optimum material and thickness (3.2t of SS400) based on the case study results, is fabricated and experimented.

Injection Molding of High Aspect Ratio Nano Features Using Stamper Heating/Cooling Process (스탬퍼 가열/냉각을 이용한 고세장비 나노 구조물 성형)

  • Polypropylene substrate with hair-like nano features(aspect $ratio{\sim}10$) on the surface is fabricated by injection molding process. Pure aluminum plate is anodized to have nano pore array on the surface and used as a stamper for molding nano features, The size and the thickness of the stamper is $30mm{\times}30mm$ and 1mm. The fabricated pore is about 120nm in diameter and 1.5 um deep. For molding of a substrate with nano-hair type of surface features, the stamper is heated up over $150^{\circ}C$ before the filling stage and cooled down below $70^{\circ}C$ after filling to release the molded part. For heating the stamper, stamper itself is used as a heating element by applying electrical power directly to each end of the stamper. The stamper becomes cooled down without circulation of coolant such as water or oil. With this new stamper heating method, nano hairs with aspect ratio of about 10 was successfully injection molded. We also found the heating & cooling process of the stamper is good for releasing of molded nano-hairs.

Electrical and Resistance Heating Properties of Carbon Fiber Heating Element for Car Seat (자동차 시트용 탄소섬유 발열체의 전기적 및 저항 발열 특성)

  • In this paper, the electrical and resistance heating properties of carbon fiber heating elements with different electroless Ni-P plating times for car seat were studied. The specific resistance and specific heat of the carbon fibers were determined using 4-point probe method and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The surface morphology and temperature of carbon fibers were measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermo-graphic camera, respectively. From experimental results, the nickel layer thickness and surface temperature of carbon fibers increased with increasing the plating time. However, the specific heat and specific resistance decreased with respect to the increased plating time. In conclusion, the electroless Ni-P plating could improve the resistance heating and electrical properties of carbon fiber heating elements for car seat.

A Study on Improvement of Performance for Perforated Type Total HEX Element (다공형 유로를 적용한 전열교환기 소자의 성능향상에 관한 연구)

  • The perforated type element for a heat recovery ventilation system has been studied to improve the performance. Four holes of diameter of 6mm are punched out for each flow channel to break the boundary layer development and increase the turbulence. KS cooling and heating conditions and test procedures are applied for study. The efficiencies are compared to those of the typical element with smooth surface. For cooling operations, the temperature, latent and enthalpy efficiencies increase 2.5%, 18% and 8%, respectively. For heating operations, the temperature, latent and enthalpy efficiencies increase 3%, 5% and 3.2%, respectively.
