  • The Langmuir monolayers of polyamic acid salts with three kinds of alkyl chains have been investigated by means of conventional $\pi$-A isotherms and second harmonic generation measurements proposed in this paper. The surface molecular density dependence of second harmonic intensity clearly shows the region of aggregation while corresponding $\pi$-A isotherm doesn't show any changes in the surface morphology at the same region. The surface morphology analysis based on the second harmonic measurement was consistent with the Brewster angle microscope measurement results.

  • It is recently well recognized that the technique for the one-sided stress wave velocity measurement in structural materials provides measurement in structural materials provides valuable information on the state of the material such as quality, uniformity, location of cracked or damaged area. This technique is especially effective to measure velocities of longitudinal and Rayleigh waves when access to only one surface of structure is possible. However, one of problems for one-sided stress wave velocity measurement is to get consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave. In this study, the laser based surface elastic wave was used to provide consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave into the materials. The velocities of creeping wave and Rayleigh wave in materials were measured by the one-sided technique using laser based surface elastic wave. These wave velocities were compared with bulk wave velocities such as longitudinal wave and shear wave velocities to certify accuracy of measurement. In addition, the mechanical properties such as poisson's ratio and specific modulus(E/p) were calculated with the velocities of surface elastic waves.

  • Polishing processes are widely used in the glass, optical, die and semiconductor industries. Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) especially is becoming one of the most important ULSI processes for the 0.25m generation and beyond. CMP is conventionally carried out using abrasive slurry and a polishing pad. But the surface of the pad has irregular pores, so there is non-uniformity of slurry flow and of contact area between wafer and the pad, and glazing occurs on the surface of the pad. This paper introduces the basic concept and fabrication technique of the next generation CMP pad using micro-molding method to obtain uniform protrusions and pores on the pad surface.

  • To improve spectrum and energy efficiency in the fifth generation (5G) wireless channels, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) transmissions have been envisioned, possibly towards the sixth generation (6G) networks. In this paper, we analyze the bit-error rate (BER) performance of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. First, we derive a closed-form expression of the BER in terms of Q functions. Then we analyze the BER improvement of the IRS NOMA system over the conventional NOMA system with respect to the power allocation. Furthermore, we also demonstrate numerically the BER improvement of the IRS NOMA network over the conventional NOMA network in respect of the number of reflecting devices.

  • Towards the sixth generation (6G) mobile networks, spectrum and energy efficiency of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmissions in the fifth generation (5G) wireless system have been improved by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technologies. However, the reflecting devices of an IRS tend to be correlated because they are placed close on the surface each other. In this paper, we present an analysis on the correlated IRS in NOMA cellular networks. Specifically, we consider the bit-error rate (BER) performances for correlated-IRS in NOMA networks. First, based on the central limit theorem, we derive an approximate analytical expression of the BER for correlated-IRS NOMA systems, by using the second moment of the channel gain. Then we validate the proposed analytical BER by Monte Carlo simulations, and show that they are in good agreement. In addition, we also show numerically the BER improvement of the correlated-IRS NOMA over the conventional independent-IRS NOMA.

  • This paper describes an automatic finite element(FE) mesh generation for three-dimensional structures consisting of free-form surfaces. This mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, i.e. analysis model, (b) generation of nodes, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid and shell structures. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of FE meshes for three-dimensional solid and shell structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for three-dimensional complex geometry.

  • This article reports for the first time on the lateral growth of PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) films on Al1050 alloy by the application of anodic pulse current in an alkaline electrolyte. Generation of microarcs was observed at the edges initially and then moved towards the central region with PEO treatment time. Disc type PEO film islands with about $20{\mu}m$ diameter were formed first and they grew laterally by the formation of new disc type PEO films at the edge of pre-formed PEO islands. The PEO film islands were found to be interconnected completely and form a continuous PEO film when generation of small size microarcs are terminated at the central part of the specimen, resulting in very smooth surface with low surface roughness less than $1{\mu}m$ of $R_a$. Further PEO treatment after the complete interconnection of PEO films islands showed local thickening of PEO films by vertical growth. It is concluded that very smooth PEO film surface can be obtained by lateral growth mechanism rather than vertical growth of them.

  • Recent advances in NLO Borate Crystals for UV Generation are reviewed with the particular emphasis on the technique to improve the life time of UV optics. The laser-damage resistance of CLBO and fused silica surfaces was successfully improved after removing polishing compound by ion beam etching. The polishing compound embedded in the CLBO and fused silica surfaces were to a depth of less than 100nm. We were able to remove polishing compound without degrading the surface condition when the applied ion beam voltage was less than 200 V. The laser-induced surface damage threshold of CLBO was improved up to 15J/$\textrm{cm}^2$(wavelength: 355 nm, pulse width: 0.85 ns)as compared with that of the as-polished surface (11 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$). The laser-induced surface damage of fused silica also increased from 7.5J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 15J/$\textrm{cm}^2$. For the irradiation of a 266 nm high-intensity and high-repetition laser light, the surface lifetime of CLBO and fused silica could be more doubled compared with that of the as-polished surface.
