Morphology and composition of MgO films grown on single-crystalline diamond (100) have been studied. MgO thin films were deposited in the substrate temperature range from room temperature (RT) to 723K by means of electron beam evaporation using MgO powder source. Atomic force microscopy images indicated that the film grown at RT without $O_2$ supply was relatively uniform and flat whereas that deposited in oxygen ambient yielded higher growth rates and rough surface morphologies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that the MgO film deposited at RT without $O_2$ has the closest composition to the stoichiometric MgO, and that a thin contaminant layer composed mainly of magnesium peroxide (before etching) or hydroxide (after etching) was unintentionally formed on the film surface, respectively. These results will be discussed in relation to the interaction among the evaporated species and intentionally supplied oxygen molecules at the growth front as well as the interfacial energy between diamond and MgO.

Quadrupole Mass Spectrometers (QMS) is a very useful tool in vacuum process diagnosis. Tungsten filament based ion sources are vulnerable to contamination from process gas monitoring. Common symptoms of quadrupole mass spectrometer malfunction is appearance of unwanted contaminant mass peaks or no detection of any ion peaks. We disassembled used quadrupole mass spectrometer and found out black insulating deposits on inside of ion source parts. Five steps of cleaning procedure were applied and almost full restoration of functions were confirmed in two types of closed ion source quadrupole mass spectrometer. By using a numerical modeling (CFD-ACE+) technique, the electric potential profile of ion source with/without insulating deposit was calculated and showed the possibility of quadrupole mass spectrometer malfunction by the deterioration of designed potential profile inside the ion source.

The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality in February, 1995. Recently, ten years after the initial operation of the HANARO, one of the two primary cooling pumps was decontaminated for overhaul maintenance in 2004. Before decontamination exposure doserate and surface contamination level of primary cooling pump measured at 4 points. After final decontamination exposure doserate and surface contamination level of primary cooling pump remeasured by same method done before. It is easy to decontaminate the out side exposed surfaces of the pump, but it is difficult to approach the inside surface due to double volute installed in the casing. Therefore, a new decontamination facility has been developed to solve this problem. A concentrated de-contaminant (DX-300) is rotated in the closed pump casing by the impeller actuated by a temporary motor. Nuclide particles are removed by the emulsification effect of the de-contaminant and the surface contaminants are chemically removed from the pump by the corrosion and dissolution effect. The inside surfaces of the primary cooling pump have been decontaminated by using the facility. As results, the contamination level of the inside surfaces was maintained below the surface contamination limit.

A new magnetite-silica core/shell nanocomposite ($Fe_3O4@nSiO_2@mSiO_2$) was synthesized and functionalized with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS). The prepared nanocomposite was used for the removal of diesel oil from aqueous media. The characterization of magnetite-silica nanocomposite was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface area measurement, and vibrating sample magnetization (VSM). Results have shown that the desired structure was obtained and surface modification was successfully carried out. FTIR analysis has confirmed the presence of TMCS on the surface of magnetite silica nanocomposites. The low- angle XRD pattern of nanocomposites indicated the mesoscopic structure of silica shell. Furthermore, TEM results have shown the core/shell structure with porous silica shell. Adsorption kinetic studies indicated that the nanocomposite was able to remove 80% of the oil contaminant during 2 h and fit well with the pseudo-second order model. Equilibrium studies at room temperature showed that the experimental data fitted well with Freundlich isotherm. The magnetic property of nanocomposite facilitated the separation of solid phase from aqueous solution.
In this study, we focus on Ca contaminant which affects on the roughness Si substrate after thermal process. The initial Si substrates were contaminated intentionally by using a standard Ca solution. The contamination levels of Ca impurity were measured by TXRF and the chemical composition of that was analyzed by AES. Then we gre the thermal oxide to investigate the effect of Ca contaminants. The microroughness of the Si surface, the thermal oxide surface, and the surface after removing the thermal oxide were measured to examine the electrical characteristics. The initial substrates that were contaminated with the standard solution of Ca exhibited the contamination levels of 10\ulcorner~10\ulcorneratoms/$\textrm{cm}^2$ which was measured by TXRF. The Ca contaminants were detected by AES and exhibited the peaks of Ca, SI, C and O.After intentional contamination, the surface microroughness of this initial substrate was increased from $1.5\AA$ to 4$\AA$ as contamination levels became higher. The microroughness of the thermal oxide surfaces of both contaminated and bare Si substrates exhibits similar values. But the microroughness of the contaminated$ Si/SiO_2$ interface was increased as contamination increased. The thermal oxide of contaminated substrate exhibited the small minority carrier diffusion length, low breakdown voltage, and slightly high leakage current.
Experiments were carried out the phenomenal observation on effect of corona treated hotmelt laminating film in process of manufacture by 2 kinds of rolling speed and electric power variatons. Surface treatment by corona which is exposure of film surface to electron of ion bombardment, rather than mere exposure to active species, like atomic oxygen or ozone, can enhance adhesion by removing contaminant, electret, roughening surface, and introducing reactive chemical group. Reactive neutrals, ions, electron and photons generated during the corona treatment interact simultaneously with polymers to alter surface chemical composition, wettability, and thus film adhesion. However, it is highly recommended that extensive chains scission is avoided because it can lead to side-effect by forming sticky matter, resulting in dropouts. This paper reviews principles of surface preparation of polypropylene substrate by corona discharging. In addition, the experimental section provides a description of parameter optimization on corona discharging treatment and its side-effect. Experimental results are discussed in terms of surface wetting as determined by contact angle and SEM measurements. When the rolling speed of the film decreased from 1.666 [m / sec] to 0.083 [m / sec], contact angle decreased from $80[^{\circ}]$ to $64[^{\circ}]$, and the wettability was greatly improved. As the supply power increased from 0.4 [kVA] to 2 [kVA] at the corona discharge surface treatment, the contact angle decreased from $77[^{\circ}]$ to $65[^{\circ}]$, and the wettability was greatly improved.

Clays coated with cationic surfactants (organoclays) have been investigated due to their effectiveness in sorbing organic compounds from water The objectives of this study were to (1) study the sorption characteristics or a cationic surfactant (HDTMA) to clay minerals; (2) examine the partitioning of HOC (naphthalene) to the adsorbed surfactants within the context of the first objective, and (3) develop overall HOC distribution coefficients that consider sorbed surfactant amounts. The sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminant was due to partitioning of the organics into the organic pseudophase created by the surfactant tail groups. Sorption of naphthalene by HDTMA-clays at different surfactant surface coverages revealed that the naphthalene K$\_$d/ values were affected by the surface concentration of surfactant. In our study the kaolinite was modified with a cationic surfactant to achieve different fractional organic carbon contents and different surfactant molecule configurations on the surface. All of the sorption isotherms were nearly linear and could be described by a distribution coefficient (K$\_$d/). The sorption of naphthalene by the surfactant-modified kaolinite was found to be dependent on the bound surfactant molecule configuration as well as on the fractional organic carbon content but halloysite was not affected by the increase of surfactant amounts. Results from this investigation provide additional insight into the role that sorbed surfactant structure plays in HOC partitioning.

Natural attenuation has been actively studied and often selected as final clean-up process in remediation of contaminated ground-water and soil for the last decade. Accordingly, understanding of natural processes affecting the fate and transport of contaminants in the subsurface becomes important for a success of implementation of the natural remediation strategy, Contaminant advection and diffusion processes in the unsaturated zone are naturally related to environmental changes in the atmosphere. The atmospheric pressure changes affecting the transport of contaminants in the subsurface are investigated in this study. Moisture content, trichloroethylene (TCE) concentration, temperature, and pressure variations in the subsurface were measured for the July, August, November, and December 2001 at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. These data were used for a one-phase flow and one-component transport model in simulating the soil-gas flow and accordingly the TCE transport in the subsurface in accordance with the atmosphere pressure variations at the surface. The soil-gas velocities during the sampling periods varied with a magnitude of $10^{-6}\;to\;10^{-7}\;m\;s^{-1}$ at land surface. The TCE advection fluxes at land surface were several orders of magnitude smaller than the TCE diffusion fluxes. A sensitivy analysis indicated that advection fluxes were more sensitive to changes in geo-environmental conditions compared to diffusion fluxes. Of all the parameters investigated in this study, moisture content has the most significant effect on TCE advection and diffusion fluxes.

Recently, polymer insulators that are used for high voltage applications have some advantages such as light weight, small size, vandalism resistance, hydrophobicity and easy making process. During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. Aging test to estimate life property of polymer insulator is executed through several international standard such as IEC 61109 and CEA tracking wheel test, but is not getting clear conclusion yet. There are two methods in the diagnosis method of polymer insulator such as off-line and on-line. The diagnosis methods in off-line are external condition analysis by the eye, contaminant analysis on surface, surface analysis, pollution withstand voltage test, power frequency flashover voltage test, lightning impulse flashover test, tensile fracture load test and flexural load test. Polymer material is also investigated it's tracking resistance by adding surface active agent in IEC 587. In this paper, the tracking performance of polymer insulator with salt solution which is added surface active agent. The diagnosis of insulator sample has been analyzed by leakage current and visual examination, STRI guide and thermal image camera.
Capillary fringe divides the groundwater and the vadose zone controlling the diffusive mass transfer of contaminants and gases. The thickness of capillary fringe is of great importance for the rate of contaminant mass transfer across the capillary fringe. Application of surface active chemicals including surfactants and alcohol-based products into the subsurface environment changes the surface tension of the aqueous phase, which in turn, affects the thickness of the capillary fringe. In this study, a bench-scale model was used to assess the quantitative relationship between the surface tension and the thickness of the capillary fringe. An anionic surfactant (Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, SDBS) and an aqueous solution of ethanol were used to control the surface tension of the groundwater. It was found that the thickness of the capillary fringe is directly proportional to the surface tension. The air entry pressures measured by the Tempe Pressure Cell at different surface tensions using SDBS (200 mg/L) and ethanol (20%, v/v) solutions were in good agreement with the thicknesses of the capillary fringe measured by the model. A simple method to correct the conventional Brooks-Corey model for estimating the air entry pressure was also presented.
