This paper describes methodology verifying near-surface predictability of numerical weather prediction models against the surface synoptic weather station network (SYNOP) observation. As verification variables, temperature, wind, humidity-related variables, total cloud cover, and surface pressure are included in this tool. Quality controlled SYNOP observation through the pre-processing for data assimilation is used. To consider the difference of topographic height between observation and model grid points, vertical inter/extrapolation is applied for temperature, humidity, and surface pressure verification. This verification algorithm is applied for verifying medium-range forecasts by a global forecasting model developed by Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems to measure the near-surface predictability of the model and to evaluate the capability of the developed verification tool. It is found that the verification of near-surface prediction against SYNOP observation shows consistency with verification of upper atmosphere against global radiosonde observation, suggesting reliability of those data and demonstrating importance of verification against in-situ measurement as well. Although verifying modeled total cloud cover with observation might have limitation due to the different definition between the model and observation, it is also capable to diagnose the relative bias of model predictability such as a regional reliability and diurnal evolution of the bias.
The importance of determining the radon exhalation rate from water surface is emphasized by the increased use of radon and its daughter products as tracers in large-scale circulation studies of the atmosphere. There were many methods to measure radon exhalation from water surface. With the development of radon exhalation rate measurement methods and instruments on the surface of the soil, the rock and building materials, so the radon exhalation rate from water surface can be more accurately measured by applying these improved methods and instruments. In this paper, a cuboid accumulation chamber surrounded by foam boards and a RAD7 were used to measure the radon exhalation rate on the water surface at three different positions by Yixin lake. Each measurement was performed 2 h. The radon exhalation rate from the water surface was about 6 × 10-3 Bq m-2s-1. The thoron exhalation rate from the water surface also can be estimated, it is about 0.16 Bq m-2s-1. These results hint that the radon transmission from the lake bottom soil to water and then into the atmosphere.
An one dimensional atmosphere-vegetation interaction model is developed to discuss of the effect of vegetation on heat flux in mesoscale planetary boundary layer. The canopy model was a coupled system of three balance equations of energy, moisture at ground surface and energy state of canopy with three independent variables of $T_f$(foliage temperature), $T_g$(ground temperature) and $q_g$(ground specific humidity). The model was verified by comparative study with OSUID(Oregon State University One Dimensional Model) proved in HYPEX-MOBHLY experiment. As the result, both vegetation and soil characteristics can be emphasized as an important factor iii the analysis of heat flux in the boundary layer. From the numerical experiments, following heat flux characteristics are clearly founded simulation. The larger shielding factor(vegetation) increase of $T_f$ while decrease $T_g$. because vegetation cut solar radiation to ground. Vegetation, the increase of roughness and resistance, increase of sensible heat flux in foliage while decrease the latent heat flux in the foliage.

This study investigated the effects of different kinds of seed crystals with miscut angles and pretreatment on the characteristics of a RE-123 superconductor processed by a top-seeded melt-growth (TSMG) method. When the seed crystal was heat-treated in an oxygen atmosphere, the surface structure was cleaned removing hydroxide. When the seed crystal had a miscut angle, in addition, the surface structure showed a well defined hill-and-valley structure after heat-treatment. A better microstructure, with a well-distributed small RE-123 phase, was obtained using a high miscut angle after heat-treatment in an oxygen atmosphere. As a result of the microstructure improvement, the magnetic characteristics also improved. The experimental result can be explained by reduction of nucleation activation energy.
Flight test is the final and a mandatory process for the development of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) as well as manned. Since most UAVs fly in a low speed and are prone to adverse weather conditions such as air turbulence, atmospheric weather environment around flight test regions will be a critical item to be considered for a flight test planning for UAVs. In this paper, we suggest a decision method for a UAV flight test schedule based on weather conditions of surface and upper atmospheres and also introduce a program for an effective flight test planning through weather forecasts.
Surface passivation using glass powders results in good reliability for high voltage silicon power devices. In this paper, Zinc borosilicate glass was prepared for the purpose of passivating, and a deposition technique of glass films on the silicon surface by electrophoresis in which acetone is used as a suspension medium and a measurement technique of C-V curve has been investigated. Properties were compared using SEM, XRD, C-V Curve as a function of firing condition, temperature and atmosphere were investigated. Under 100V applied, 1 minute, $700^{\circ}C$ firing temperature, and $O_2$ atmosphere, I can get the fine films $5.8{\mu}m$ thickness with Zinc borosilicate glass. As a result of investigation of glass films, it has been found that pre-firing and annealing play an important role to achieve uniform, fine, reliable glass deposition films and Glass/Silicon interlace.
Siloxane thin films were fabricated on a silicon wafer by spin-coating using a siloxane solution made by the sol-gel process. Fluorine was doped using$ CF_4$ plasma treatment. The film was then annealed in-situ state in the nitrogen atmosphere. In order to examine the influence of annealing and fluorine doping on the siloxane thin film, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used and the dielectric constant was determined by the high-frequency capacitance-voltage method. Stable siloxane films could be obtained by in-situ annealing in a nitrogen atmosphere after $CF_4$ plasma treatment, and the dielectric value of the film was $\varepsilon$ 2.5.
This study was conducted to investigate the sudden rise of fine particle concentration after the passage of typhoon USAGI and NARI in Busan. Nocturnal inversion layer was formed at atmospheric boundary layer and wind direction changed from southerly wind to northeasterly wind after USAGI passed through Busan. Fine particle concentration in Busan rapidly increased by subsidence of air pollutants released from sources and dust transported from in the vicinity of industrial regions. Wind direction changed from northeasterly wind to southeasterly wind, wind velocity increased and lower atmosphere became extremely unstable after NARI passed through Busan. $PM_{10}$ concentration of Busan increased sharply because of surface dust dispersed by strong wind. Fine particle concentration generally decreases by precipitation and wind after typhoon passes through. However, the concentration can also go up not only by subsidence and transportation in nocturnal inversion layer but also by surface dust which temporarily occurs by strong wind.
Various vanadium-oxide thin films were deposited by e-beam and thermal evaporation of V2O5, V2O3, and VO2 powders. Films with thickness of $2000\AA$ were subjected to annealing at $300^{\circ}C$~$450^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere for the crystallization and desification purposes. For the films deposited from V2O5 and VO2 sources, sources, Magneli (VnO2n-1$ 4\leq$$n\leq$ 8) and VO2 phase appeared at $300^{\circ}C$, respectively, but VO2 phase also transformed into Magneli phase at $450^{\circ}C$ by severe reduction. On the contrary, VO2/VO mixed phases resulted from congruent evaporation of V2O3 unchanged after the same annealing treatment due to the balanced reduction and oxidation of VO2 and VO whcih have different equilibrium O2 pressures. It is suggested that the annealing in the controlled oxidation atmosphere or the deposition using mixed oxide sources are necessary to get the film containing VO2 phase.
An investigation has been performed on the effects of temperature and Ni addition on the wetting behaviour of Cu on W substrate in hydrogen atmosphere. An sessile drop method was used to measure a wetting angle. The concentration profiles of W, Cu and Ni elements in W/Cu - 5 Ni specimen were made by EPMA. With increasing temperature, the wetting angle of Cu droplet on W plate decreases and the time to reach an equilibrium wetting angle is shortened in hydrogen atmosphere. The addition of Ni improves appreciably the wettability of Cu on W. With increasing Ni content in Cu liquid droplet(0, 1, 3, 5%), the wetting angle is decreased from 21$^{\circ}$to 0$^{\circ}$.
