Synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles and their photocatalytic activity under UV light

  • Zinc oxide is metal oxide semiconductor with the 3.37 eV bandgap energy. Zinc oxide is very attractive materials for many application fields. Zinc Oxide has many advantages such as high conductivity and good transmittance in visible region. Also it is cheaper than other semiconductor materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO). Therefore, ZnO is alternative material for ITO. ZnO is attracting attention for its application to transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films, surface acoustic wave (SAW), films bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR), piezoelectric materials, gas-sensing, solar cells and photocatalyst. In this study, we synthesized ZnO nanoparticles and defined their physical and chemical properties. Also we studied about the application of ZnO nanoparticles as a photocatalyst and try to find a enhancement photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanorticles.. We synthesized ZnO nanoparticles using spray-pyrolysis method and defined the physical and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles in experiment I. When the ZnO are exposed to UV light, reduction and oxidation (REDOX) reaction will occur on the ZnO surface and generate O2- and OH radicals. These powerful oxidizing agents are proven to be effective in decomposition of the harmful organic materials and convert them into CO2 and H2O. Therefore, we investigated that the photocatalytic activity was increased through the surface modification of synthesized ZnO nanoparticles. In experiment II, we studied on the stability of ZnO nanoparticles in water. It is well known that ZnO is unstable in water in comparison with TiO2. Zn(OH)2 was formed at the ZnO surface and ZnO become inactive as a photocatalyst when ZnO is present in the solution. Therefore, we prepared synthesized ZnO nanoparticles that were immersed in the water and dried in the oven. After that, we measured photocatalytic activities of prepared samples and find the cause of their photocatalytic activity changes.

Surface Acoustic Wave Properties of ZnO Thin Films Deposited on Diamond Substrate (다이아몬드 기판상에 증착된 ZnO 압전박막의 탄성표면파 특성)

  • ZnO thin films were deposited on Corning 7059 glass substrates to study fundamental properties of films. According to the experimental results, (002) preferred ZnO thin films were grown by purging Ar/O2 mixed gas, but not without oxygen gas. The structure and the orientation of ZnO thin films were much affected by the substrate temperature and rf power. High quality ZnO films were obtained by increasing their values. Optimum deposition parameters were : 300W rf power, 300℃ substrate temperature, Ar/O2=70/30. To characterize SAW propagation properties, IDT was fabricated by etching Al films deposited on diamond/Si wafer with RIE. Measured λ(wavelength) was 24μm and experimental results were well matched with simulation. Center frequency was 250MHz, and the calculated phase velocity of ZnO/ diamond structure was about 6000m/s.

Quality properties of fermented mugworts and the rapid pattern analysis of their volatile flavor components via surface acoustic wave (SAW) based electronic nose sensor in the GC system (발효 인진쑥과 약쑥의 이화학적 품질특성 및 GC와 SAW센서기반 electronic nose에 의한 향기패턴의 신속분석)

  • The changes in quality properties and nutritional components for two mugworts, namely, Artemisia capillaris Thumberg Artemisiae asiaticae Nakai fermented by Bacillus strains were characterized followed by rapid pattern analysis of volatile flavor compounds through the SAW-based electronic nose sensor in the GC system. After fermentation, the pH has remarkably decreased from 6.0~6.4 to 4.6~5.1 and there has been a slight change in the total soluble solids. The L (lightness) and b (yellowness) values in the Hunter's color system significantly decreased, whilst the a (redness) value increased via fermentation. The HPLC analysis demonstrated that the total amino acids increased in quantity and the essential amino acids were higher in the A. asiaticae Nakai than in the A. capillaris Thumberg, specially with high contents of glutamic and aspartic acid. After fermentation, the monounsaturated fatty acid increased in the A. asiaticae Nakai and the polyunsaturated fatty acids increased in the A. capillaris Thumberg. While the total polyphenol contents have not been affected by fermentation, the total sugar contents have dramatically decreased. Scopoletin, which is one of the most important index components in mugworts, was highly abundant in the A. capillaris Thumberg; however, it was not detected in the A. asiaticae Nakai. Small pieces of plant tissue in the surface microstructure were found in the fermented mugworts through the use of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Volatile flavor compounds via electronic nose showed that the intensity of several peaks has increased and additional seven flavor peaks have been produced after fermentation. The VaporPrintTM images demonstrated a notable difference in flavors between the A. asiaticae Nakai and A. capillaris Thumberg, and the fermentation enabled the mugworts to produce subtle differences in flavor.

Design and Fabrication of Compressive Receiver for RFID Signal Detection (RFID 신호 탐지용 컴프레시브 수신기의 설계 및 제작)

  • In this paper, the theoretical background and the specific implementation method of a compressive receiver for RFID signal detection as well as the design method of DDL(Dispersive Delay Line) and chirp LO are described. DDL, which is one of the main components of the compressive receiver, is designed to have $13{\mu}s$ dispersive delay time and 6 MHz bandwidth using the SAW technique based on $LiNbO_3$ material. The chirp LO is designed using DDS(Direct Digital Synthesizer). Also the compressive receiver is fabricated to be installed into the RFID reader. Test results show the maximum frequency error of 25 kHz for single signal input, the receiver sensitivity of -44 dBm, and the maximum frequency error is 75 kHz for 6 multi-tone input signals. These results indicate that the fabricated compressive receiver is working well even in dense RFID operating environments.

Characterization and Preparation of a-axis Preferred Oriented PLZT(x/0/100) Thin Films Deposited by RF-magnetron Sputtering Process (RF-magnetron Sputtering Process를 이용한 a-축 우선 배향된 PLZT(x/0/100)박막의 제조)

  • RF-magnetron Sputtering Process를 이용하여 Pt/Ti/Si(100)기판위에 lanthanum-modified lead titanate 박막을 제작하였다. 기판온도와 증착시간이 증가함에 따라 증착율은 감소하였다. 기판온도가 증가함에 따라 fine grain들은 large grain으로 변화하였다. Perovskite구조는 기판온도 54$0^{\circ}C$, gas pressure 30mtorr에서 나타나기 시작하였다. 본 실험에서 perovskite 박막제작에 대한 조건은 기판온도 58$0^{\circ}C$, gas pressure 30mtorr였다. Pt/Ti/Si(100) 우선 배향된 박막을 얻었다. La양이 증가함에 따라 유전율, 항전계, 잔류분극량은 증가하였다. 중심주파수가 44.7MHz, 전파속도는 2680m/sec를 가지는 SAW filter 특성을 얻었다.

Analysis of Salmonella Contaminated Beef Odor Using an Electronic Nose

  • An electronic nose was used to identify Salmonella contamination on beef based on odors. To detect pathogen contamination of beef, $100{\mu}L$ of $10^5CFU/g$ Salmonella Enteritidis or Salmonella Typhimurium cell suspensions were spiked onto 5 g beef sirloin samples in individual vials. Odor changes over time were then measured and analyzed using an electronic nose system to identify pathogen contamination. In principle, the electronic nose system based on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) detector produced different frequency responses depending on the time and amount of each chemical. Multivariate analysis of the odor data was conducted to detect Salmonella contamination of beef. Salmonella odors were successfully distinguished from uncontaminated beef odors by principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA results showed that Salmonella contamination of beef could be detected after 4 h of incubation. The numbers of cells enumerated by standard plate count after 4 h of inoculation were $2{\times}10^6CFU/g$ for both Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium.

A Study on the fabrication of Bandpass filter Using a Simulator (시뮬레이터를 이용한 대역통과 필터 제작)

  • We have studied to obtain the frequency characteristics of the Surface Acoustic Wave(SAW) bandpass filter, having low shape factor, it's interdigital transducer(IDT) was formed on the 35° Y-cut X-propagation Quartz substrate and was evaporated by Aluminium. And then, we performed computer-simulation by a simulator. And, we can design that the apodization weighted type IDT as an input transducer of the filter and the withdrawal weighted type IDT as an output transducer of the filter from the results of our computer-simulation. Also, we have employed that the number of pairs of the input and output IDT are 2200 pairs and 1000pairs, respectively and used the Kaiser-Bessel window function in order to minimize the effect of ripple. And, while the width and the space of IDT's finger are 6㎛ m and 5.75㎛, respectively and we could obtain the resonable results when the IDT thickness was 6000Å in consideration of the ratio of SAW's wavelength, and IDT aperture is 2mm. Frequency response of the fabricated SAW bandpass filter has the property that the center frequency is about 70MHz, shape factor is less than 1.3, bandwidth at the 1.5dB is probably 1.3MHz, out-band attenuation is almost -45dB, insertion loss is 19dB and ripple in the width of bandpass is 1dB approximately. Therefore, these frequency characteristics of the fabricated SAW bandpass filter are agreed well with the designed values.

Characteristics of AlN Thin Films by Magnetron Sputtering System Using Reactive Gases of N2 and NH3 (N2와 NH3 반응성가스를 사용하여 마그네트론 스퍼터링법으로 제작한 AlN박막의 특성)

  • Aluminum nitride, a compound semiconductor, has a Wurtzite structure; good material properties such as high thermal conductivity, great electric conductivity, high dielectric breakdown strength, a wide energy band gap (6.2eV), a fast elastic wave speed; and excellent in thermal and chemical stability. Furthermore, the thermal expansion coefficient of the aluminum nitride is similar to those of Si and GaAs. Due to these characteristics, aluminum nitride can be applied to electric packaging components, dielectric materials, SAW (surface acoustic wave) devices, and photoelectric devices. In this study, we surveyed the crystallization and preferred orientation of AlN thin films with an X-ray diffractometer. To fabricate the AlN thin film, we used the magnetron sputtering method with $N_2$, NH3 and Ar. According to an increase in the partial pressures of $N_2$ and $NH_3$, Al was nitrified and deposited onto a substrate in a molecular form. When AlN was fabricated with $N_2$, it showed a c-axis orientation and tended toward a high orientation with an increase in the temperature. On the other hand, when AlN was fabricated with $NH_3$, it showed a-axis orientation. This result is coincident with the proposed mechanism. We fabricated AlN thin films with an a-axis orientation by controlling the sputtering electric power, $NH_3$ pressure, deposition speed, and substrate temperature. According to the proposed mechanism, we also fabricated AlN thin films which demonstrated high a-axis and c-axis orientations.

Effect of UV-B Irradiation on the content of vitamin D$_2$, color and flavor pattern in Lentinus edodes (자외선 B파 조사가 표고버섯의 비타민 D$_2$ 함량, 색도 및 향기패턴에 미치는 영향)

  • Lentinus ededes were irradiated with Utraviolet-B(UV-B) at 0, 2.5, 5.0 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ levels while culturing in sawdust medium, and the changes in vitamin D$_2$ content, color and flavor of the mushroom were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Hunter-Lab Chromatometer and Gas Chromatography-Surface Acoustic Wave (GC-SAW) electric nose, respectively. Irradiation of 0, 2.5, 5.0 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ doses of UV-B increased the content of vitamin D$_2$ in the mushroom significantly, which was 157∼206% higher than the control group. There was a significant difference in L value between the control group and UV-B irradiated (2.5 and 5.0 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$) groups. The changes of flavor pattern were detected by GC-SAW electric nose. But the color and flavor changes were not detrimental to the quality of the mushroom. The results suggested that UV-B irradiation is a good way to increase the vitamin D$_2$ content of Lentinus edodes during cultivation.
