  • Support vector machines(SVMs) are known as flexible and efficient classifier of multivariate observations, producing a hyperplane or hyperdimensional curved surface in multidimensional feature space that best separates training samples by known groups. As various methodological extensions are made for SVM classifiers in recent years, it becomes more difficult to understand the constructed model intuitively. The aim of this paper is to visualize various SVM classifications tuned by several parameters in reduced dimensions, so that data analysts secure the tangible image of the products that the machine made.

  • Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of machines are gaining importance in the industry because of the need to increase reliability and to decrease possible loss of production due to machine breakdown. By comparing the nitration signals of a machine running in normal and faulty conditions, detection of faults like mass unbalance, shaft misalignment and bearing defects is possible. This paper presents a novel approach for applying the fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. To detect multiple faults in rotating machinery, a feature selection method and support vector machine (SVM) based multi-class classifier are constructed and used in the faults diagnosis. The results in experiments prove that fault types can be diagnosed by the above method.

  • In this paper, a new kernelized approach for use in a recommender system (RS) is proposed. Using a machine learning technique, the proposed method predicts the user's preferences for unknown items and recommends items which are likely to be preferred by the user. Since the ratings of the users are generally inconsistent and noisy, a robust binary classifier called a dual margin Lagrangian support vector machine (DMLSVM) is employed to suppress the noise. The proposed method is applied to MovieLens databases, and its effectiveness is demonstrated via simulations.

  • Although several methods have been used to assess the pain levels, few practical methods for classifying presence or absence of the pain using pattern classifiers have been suggested. The aim of this study is to design an pattern classifier that classifies the presence or absence of the pain using electrocardiogram (ECG). We measured the ECG signal from 10 subjects with the painless state and the pain state(Induced by mechanical stimulation). The 10 features of heart rate variability (HRV) were extracted from ECG - MeanRRI, SDNN, rMSSD, NN50, pNN50 in the time domain; VLF, LF, HF, Total Power, LF/HF in the frequency domain; and we used the features as input vector of the pattern classifier's artificial neural network (ANN) / support vector machine (SVM) for classifying the presence or absence of the pain. The study results showed that the classifiers using ANN / SVM could classify the presence or absence of the pain with accuracies of 81.58% / 81.84%. The proposed classifiers can be applied to the objective assessment of pain level.

  • It is a challenging work for service operators to accurately classify different services, which runs on various wireless networks based upon numerous platforms. This works focuses on design and implementation of a classifier, which accurately classifies applications, which are captured horn WiBro Network. Notion of session is introduced for the classifier, instead of commonly used Flow to develop a classifier. Based on session information of given traffic, two classification algorithms are presented, Classification and Regression Tree and Support Vector Machine. Both algorithms are capable of classifying accurately and effectively with misclassification rate of 0.85%, and 0.94%, respectively. This work shows that classifier using CART provides ease of interpreting the result and implementation.

  • A Computer-Aided Diagnosis system has been examined to reduce the effort of radiologist. In this paper, we propose the algorithm using Support Vector Machine(SVM) classifier to discriminate whether microcalcifications are malignant or benign tumors. The proposed method to detect microcalcifications is composed of two detection steps each of which uses SVM classifier. The coarse detection step finds out pixels considered high contrasts comparing with neighboring pixels. Then, Region of Interest(ROI) is generated based on microcalcification characteristics. The fine detection step determines whether the found ROIs are microcalcifications or not by merging potential regions using obtained ROIs and SVM classifier. The proposed method is specified on Korean mammogram database. The experimental result of the proposed algorithm presents robustness in detecting microcalcifications than the previous method using Artificial Neural Network as classifier even when using small training data.

  • Recently, human action recognition have been developed for various broadcasting and video process. Since a video can consist of various scenes, keypoint approaches have been more attracted than template based methods for real application. Keypoint approahces tried to find regions having motion in video, and made 3-dimensional patches. Then, descriptors using histograms were computed from the patches, and a classifier based on machine learning method was applied to detect actions in video. However, a single classifier was difficult to handle various human actions. In order to improve this problem, approaches using multi classifiers were used to detect and to recognize objects. Thus, we propose a new human action recognition using decision-level fusion with support vector machine and sparse representation. The proposed method extracted descriptors based on keypoint approach from a video, and acquired results from each classifier for human action recognition. Then, we applied weights which were acquired by training stage to fuse each results from two classifiers. The experiment results in this paper show better result than a previous fusion method.

  • In order to classify a web page as being benign or malicious, we designed 14 basic and 16 extended features. The basic features that we implemented were selected to represent the essential characteristics of a web page. The system heuristically combines two basic features into one extended feature in order to effectively distinguish benign and malicious pages. The support vector machine can be trained to successfully classify pages by using these features. Because more and more malicious web pages are appearing, and they change so rapidly, classifiers that are trained by old data may misclassify some new pages. To overcome this problem, we selected an adaptive support vector machine (aSVM) as a classifier. The aSVM can learn training data and can quickly learn additional training data based on the support vectors it obtained during its previous learning session. Experimental results verified that the aSVM can classify malicious web pages adaptively.

  • This paper present a decision method of middle ear disease which is developed in children and adults. In the proposed method, features are extracted from the middle ear disease images and normal images using HOG(histogram of oriented gradient) descriptor and the extracted features are learned by SVM(support vector machine) classifier. Input images are classified by SVM classifier based on the model of learning features. Experimental results show that the method yields accuracy of over 90% in decision.

  • Speech recognition is one of the fascinating fields in the area of Computer science. Accuracy of speech recognition system may reduce due to the presence of noise present in speech signal. Therefore noise removal is an essential step in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system and this paper proposes a new technique called combined thresholding for noise removal. Feature extraction is process of converting acoustic signal into most valuable set of parameters. This paper also concentrates on improving Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) features by introducing Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform (DWPT) in the place of Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT) block to provide an efficient signal analysis. The feature vector is varied in size, for choosing the correct length of feature vector Self Organizing Map (SOM) is used. As a single classifier does not provide enough accuracy, so this research proposes an Ensemble Support Vector Machine (ESVM) classifier where the fixed length feature vector from SOM is given as input, termed as ESVM_SOM. The experimental results showed that the proposed methods provide better results than the existing methods.
