  • Purpose: This study was a descriptive survey research to identify the factors that influence sick role behavior compliance in patients on hemodialysis. Methods: Structured surveys were used to collect data from 170 patients who are on hemodialysis three times a week through outpatient care at a university hospital located in G City using tools measuring resilience, family support, and sick role behavior compliance. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Stepwise multiple linear regression. Results: The results showed that factors that influenced sick role behavior compliance in the subjects were in the order of family support (${\beta}=.27$, p<.001), age (${\beta}=.27$, p<.001), and resilience (${\beta}=.23$, p=.003). Resilience, family support, and sick role behavior compliance were positively correlated. Factors influencing hemodialysis patients' sick role behavior compliance included family support, age, and resilience. These variables explained 30.2% of the variance in sick role behavior compliance. Conclusion: Based on these results, care intervention and the development of a training program that involves family in the treatment plan and process to support and encourage patients are needed to increase the sick role behavior compliance in patients on hemodialysis.

  • Cancer is still a threat to human beings. The incidence and mortality rate of cancer have been gradually increasing as the life span has been lengthened. Radiotherapy is one of the most commonly used treatments for cancer. This study explored the influence of social support and stress on sick role behavior of patients receiving radiotherapy for cancer. The subjects for this study were 60 patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancer, selected from the radiotherapy treatment unit of the out patient departments of two major medical centers in Jeonju. Data were collected from February 1 to 28, 1990 by a Likert Scale Questionnaire and an interview schedule designed by the inverstigator. Data analysis included percentages, mean and standard deviation, t or F-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results included the following : 1. Support came primarily from sons and daughters (90.1%) ; the type of support was primarily emotional support from friends(60.0%) ; informational support came from health personnel(81.7%) ; and material support was sons and daughters(40.0%) ; satisfaction with support was highest for the spouse(4.02$\pm$.52). 2. Among the patient's demographic status was occupation the was the only socioeconomic characteristic influencing sick role behavior (F=2.91 , p=.029). 3. Directly perveived support was positively correlated with sick role behavior (r=.2374, p=.034). 4. Stepwise multiple regression was used to determine the predictors of sick role behavior. Directly perceived support was the most significant predictor accounting for the hightest contribution to sick role behavior(5.6%). Directly perceived support. socioeconomic status, perceived stress and indirectly perceived support variables together, accounted for only 6.8% of sick role behavior.

  • In this study of adolescent aggression, the subjects were 320 male and female 7th and 8th grade students in Changwon. Data were collected with questionnaires and analyzed by Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis. Results showed that, 1) low friend support, empathy, and prosocial behavior had direct paths to adolescent overt aggression. 2) Low teacher and friend support, empathy, and prosocial behavior had direct paths to adolescent verbal aggression. 3) Low empathy and self-esteem were indirectly related to adolescent aggression through low prosocial behavior. 4) Low teacher support was indirectly related to adolescent aggression through low empathy and self-esteem. 5) Low friend support was indirectly related to adolescent aggression through low self-esteem.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of peer support on conduct behavior and withdrawal and to investigate the mediating effect of negative automatic thought. The subjects included 461 students(boys 51%, girls 49%) from the 1st to 3rd grades of middle school in Seoul. Conduct behavior and withdrawal was measured by the Korean Youth Self Report and the Conners-Wells'-Adolescent Self Report Scales. Negative automatic thoughts were measured by the Korean Children Youth Automatic Thoughts Scale. Using Amos 20, structural equation modeling was conducted. The findings of the structural equation modeling was that peer support had an impact on conduct behavior and withdrawal. Peer support contributed to a reduction of negative automatic thoughts. Negative automatic thoughts had a mediating effect between peer support and withdrawal or conduct. We suggest that peer support affects conduct behavior and withdrawal through negative automatic thought. We also found gender differences; compared with girls, boys received less support from peers. They also had lower levels of negative automatic thoughts and withdrawal than girls. The further study should be considered to provide more correlation factors of peer support.

  • Purpose: This study was done to measure the degree of the hostility, perceived social support and health behavior compliance among patients with coronary artery disease and to identify the relationship among those variables. Methods: The participants were 145 hospitalized patients with coronary artery disease. Data were collected from December 15, 2007 to March 15, 2008 using a questionnaire and medical record. Results: Mean scores for hostility, perceived social support and health behavior compliance were 54.80, 53.03 and 59.38 respectively. Differences in the degree of hostility were significant for marital status and serum total cholesterol. There were significant differences in the degree of health behavior compliance according to body mass index, serum total cholesterol, smoking, drinking, exercise and regular diet. Health behavior compliance was correlated with hostility and perceived social support, and hostility was correlated with perceived social support. Conclusion: Intensive programs to enhance perceived social support but to reduce hostility are warranted to improve health behavior in patients with coronary artery disease.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine pathways from interparental conflict to adolescents' problem behavior through maternal support and control and/or quality of peer relationship. A sample of 340 high school students (166 boys and 174 girls) in Incheon completed questionnaires on interparental conflict, maternal support and control, quality of peer relationship, and problem behavior. Data were analyzed by means of structural equation modeling. The results demonstrated that interparental conflict had a direct influence in both internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors, indicating that adolescents who perceived higher levels of interparental conflict had more problem behaviors. Regarding pathways from interparental conflict to problem behavior through maternal support and control and/or quality of peer relationships, adolescents perceiving higher levels of interparental conflict reported higher maternal psychological control and lower support and behavioral control. This was followed by a lower level of quality in terms of their peer relationships; the lower quality of peer relationships resulted in more adolescent problem behaviors. These results indicate that interparental conflict and maternal support and control play crucial roles in the development of internalizing and externalizing problem behavior, respectively.

The subjects were 285 6th and 8th grade students and their homeroom teachers. A questionnaire was used as survey method. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan post test. and multiple regression. The results are as follows: First, internal locus of control was positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Perceived family support, family cohesion and adaptability were positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Second, girls were higher internal locus of control, family cohesion, family adaptability and social competence and lower in antisocial behavior than boys. The 8th graders had lower scores than 6th graders in perceived family support, family cohesion, family adaptability and social competence and higher level of antisocial behavior. Third, perceived family support and family adaptability impacted social competence in girls, and grade impacted social competence in boys. Grade, perceived family support and locus of control had significant effects on the antisocial behavior in boys, and perceived family support impacted antisocial behavior in girls.

In regression analysis, a total of 33.4% of variance in DSMB was accounted for by intention to behavior, family support, and health professional support. Conclusion: To improve DSMB of the elderly, diabetes educator should consider on the strategies across both personal and social motivation related to DSMB.
