  • A micromechanical model is presented for superplasticity in which heterogeneous microstructures are coupled with deformation behavior. The effects of initial distributions of grain size, and their evolutions on the mechanical properties can be predicted by the model. Alternative stress rate models such as Jaumann rate and rotation incremental rate have been employed to analyze uniaxial loading and simple shear problems and the appropriate modeling was studied on the basis of hypoelasticity and elasto-viscoplasticity. The model has been implemented into finite element software so that full process simulation can be carried out. Tests have been conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the microstructural features such as grain size, distributions of grain size, and volume fraction of each phase were examined for the materials that were tested at different strain rates. The experimentally observed stress-strain behavior on a range of initial grain size distributions has been shown to be correctly predicted. In addition, the effect of volume fraction of the phases and concurrent grain growth were analyzed. The dependence of failure strain on strain rate has been explained in terms of the change in mechanism of grain growth that occurs with changing strain rate.

  • The superplastic behavior of whisker reinforced aluminum alloy matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting as one of high pressure routes was investigated. The preforms of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ and ${\beta}-SiC$ whiskers without any binder as a reinforcement were used. The matrix materials were 2024 and 7075 aluminum alloys. For the purpose of optimum superplastic condition, respectively, the whiskers volume fraction, extrusion temperature, tensile test temperature and initial strain rate were changed. Fracture surface of tested specimens were observed by SEM. By the results, it became possible to produce superplastic composites by applying only a hot extrusion process to composites obtained by the squeeze casting. The superplastic composites developed are ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4w/7075$, ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4w/2024$ and ${\beta}-SiCw/2024$ systems at high strain rate.

  • Superplastic deformation behavior of a Zn-0.3 wt.% Al was investigated. Grain sizes of $1{\mu}m$ and $10{\mu}m$ were obtained by a thermomechanical treatment. A series of load relaxation and tensile tests were conducted at various temperatures ranging from RT ($24^{\circ}C$) to $200^{\circ}C$. A large elongation of 1400% was obtained at room temperature in the specimens with the grain size of $1{\mu}m$. In the case of specimens with the grain size of $10{\mu}m$, relatively lower elongation at room temperature was obtained and, as the temperature increases above $100^{\circ}C$, a high elongation of about 400 % has been obtained at $200^{\circ}C$ under the strain rate of $2{\times}10^{-4}/s$. Dynamic materials model (DMM) has been employed to explain the contribution from GBS of Zn-Al alloy. Power dissipation efficiency for GBS was evaluated as above 0.4 and found to be very close to the unity as strain rate decreased and temperature increased, suggesting that GBS could be regarded as Newtonian viscous flow.

  • Zr-based bulk metallic glasses have a significant mechanical properties such as high strength and elastic strain limit, and a good processing ability due to the deformation behavior such as superplasticity under supercooled liquid region. Recently, many researches on the determination of optimum working condition in various bulk metallic glasses have been carried out. In this study, the deformation behavior and forming conditions of $Zr_{55}Cu_{30}Al_{10}Ni_{5}$ bulk metallic glass were investigated under three different strain rates and at various temperatures between 627K and 727K. The glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature and supercooled liquid region of $Zr_{55}Cu_{30}Al_{10}Ni_{5}$ bulk metallic glass are 680K, 762K and 82K, respectively.

  • A study has been made to investigate the boundary sliding and its accommodation mode with respect to the variation of $\alpha$$_2$/$eta$ volume fraction during superplastic deformation of two-phase Ti$_3$Al-xNb intermetallics. Step strain rate and load relaxation tests have been performed at 950, 970 and 99$0^{\circ}C$ to obtain the flow stress curves and to analyze the deformation characteristics by the theory of inelastic deformation. The results show that the grain matrix deformation and boundary sliding of the three intermetallics containing 21, 50 and 77% in $eta$ volume fractions are well described by the plastic deformation and viscous flow equations. Due to the equal accommodation of both $a^2$ and $\beta$ phases, the accommodation modes for fine-grained materials are in good agreement with the iso-strain rate models. The sliding resistance analyzed for the different boundaries is the lowest in the $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$ boundary, and increases in the order of $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$<< $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ = $\beta$/$\beta$, which plays an important role in controlling the superplasticity of the alloys with the various $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ phase ratio.

  • The 8 mm dia: Sn-38%Pb eutectic alloy rods were produced by use of the horizontal continuous casting process with the heated mold and chill cast process. The cast rods were rolled into 2.0${\sim}$0.5 mm thick plates and structural and mechanical properties were examined. The results revealed that the plates produced by the continuous casting process with the heated mold show much higher superplasticity at ambient temperature (1550% elongation at 0.5mm thick plate and 0.5mm/min strain rate) than the plates procuced by chill cast process (630% elongation). Such a high superplasticity of the continuous cast plates is due to the high-quality plates free from any inside and surface defects with fine and uniform distribution of eutectic phases.

  • It is known that superplastic materials with ultrafine grains have high elongation mainly due to grain boundary sliding. Therefore, in the present study we examined the influence of grain refinement, caused by a repetitive cold rolling and annealing process, on both superplastic elongation and superplastic deformation mechanism. The cold rolling and annealing process was repetitively applied up to 4 times using Fe-10Mn-3.5Si alloy. High-temperature tensile tests were conducted at 763 K with an initial strain rate of 1 × 10-3 s-1 using the specimens. The superplastic elongation increased with the number of the repetitive cold rolling and annealing process; in particular, the 4 cycled specimen exhibited the highest elongation of 372%. The primary deformation mechanism of all specimens was grain boundary sliding between recrystallized α-ferrite and reverted γ-austenite grains. The main reason for the increase in elongation with the number of the repetitive cold rolling and annealing process was the increase in fractions of fine recrystallized α-ferrite and reverted γ-austenite grains, which undergo grain boundary sliding.

  • In this study, factors considered to be causes of promotion of densification of sintered pellets identified during phase change are reviewed. As a result, conclusions shown below are obtained for each factor. In order for MA powder to soften, a temperature of 1,000 K or higher is required. In order to confirm the temporary increase in density throughout the sintered pellet, the temperature rise due to heat during phase change was found not to have a significant effect. While examining the thermal expansion using the compressed powder, which stopped densification at a temperature below the MA powder itself, and the phase change temperature, no shrinkage phenomenon contributing to the promotion of densification is observed. The two types of powder made of Ti-silicide through heat treatment are densified only in the high temperature region of 1,000 K or more; it can be estimated that this is the effect of fine grain superplasticity. In the densification of the amorphous powder, the dependence of sintering pressure and the rate of temperature increase are shown. It is thought that the specific densification behavior identified during the phase change of the Ti-37.5 mol.%Si composition MA powder reviewed in this study is the result of the acceleration of the powder deformation by the phase change from non-equilibrium phase to equilibrium phase.

  • MA Al alloys are examined to determine the effects of alloying of Mg and Cu and rolling on tensile deformation behavior at 748 K over a wide strain rate range($10^{-4}-10^3/s$). A powder metallurgy aluminum alloy produced from mechanically alloyed pure Al powder exhibits only a small elongation-to-failure(${\varepsilon}_f$ < ~50%) in high temperature(748 K) tensile deformation at high strain rates(${\acute{\varepsilon}}=1-10^2/s$). ${\varepsilon}_f$ in MA Al-0.5~4.0Mg alloys increases slightly with Mg content(${\varepsilon}_f={\sim}140%$ at 4 mass%). Combined addition of Mg and Cu(MA Al-1.5%Mg-4.0%Cu) is very effective for the occurrence of superplasticity(${\varepsilon}_f$ > 500%). Warm-rolling(at 393-492 K) tends to raise ${\varepsilon}_f$. Lowering the rolling-temperature is effective for increasing the ductility. The effect is rather weak in MA pure Al and MA Al-Mg alloys, but much larger in the MA Al-1.5%Mg-4.0%Cu alloy. Additions of Mg and Cu and warm-rolling of the alloy cause a remarkable reduction in the logarithm of the peak flow stress at low strain rates (${\acute{\varepsilon}}$< ~1/s) and sharpening of microstructure and smoothening of grain boundaries. Additions of Mg and Cu make the strain rate sensitivity(the m value) larger at high strain rates, and the warm-rolling may make the grain boundary sliding easier with less cavitation. Grain boundary facets are observed on the fracture surface when ${\varepsilon}_f$ is large, indicating the operation of grain boundary sliding to a large extent during superplastic deformation.

  • Many experimental results have revealed that the development of cavitaition during tensile deformation is limited by the Presence of liquid phases. However, the presence of liquid phases does not always lead to high-strain-rate superplasticity, because too much liquid causes intergranular decohesion at grain boundaries/interfaces in metal-matrix composites. Thus, it is important to examine the nature of interfaces of superplastic composites in order to understand the origin of superplastic flow related to liquid grain boundaries during high-strain-rate superplastic deformation. This study shows that a large elongation is obtained at the temperature, that is close to the onset temperature for partial melting in the superplastic composites, but the elongation significantly decreases at slightly higher temperatures, which are close to the end temperature fur partial melting. This indicates that there is an optimum amount of the liquid phase for obtaining high-strain-rate superplasticity in these materials.
