Essential oils from Fennel fruit(Foeniculum vulgare Mill), Olibanum resin(Boswellia carteii Birew) and Needl Juniperus stem(Juniperus rigida Sieb.) were extracted by a supercritical fluid extraction system(SFE) and biological activity of each essential oils were observed. SFE technique was applied for the isolation and purification of nonpolar biologically active essential oils from each samples. The quantitative analysis of essential oils was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer(GC/MS). About 60% of the growth of AGS and A549 cells were inhibited by adding 1.0g/l of the crude essential oils and below 40% was observed by the control. Cytotoxicity on human normal lung cell(HEL299) was scored as $15{\sim}18%$ for the crude essential oils and 12% for control, respectively. It meant that the essential oils were more effective than the control in anti-mutagenecity tested by CHO V79 cells. The effect of the essential oils on the growth of nerve cells, PC12 was observed as follows: The viable cell density was about two times higher than control.

The purpose of this study is to remove paraffin wax binder effectively from powder injection molded part using supercritical fluids in powder injection molding process. For a thin powder injection molded part about 1-2 mm thickness, paraffin wax binder can be removed rapidly without any defect by traditional supercritical extraction process which has fixed high temperature and pressure condition. But, for a thick powder injection molded part, there are limitations in removing paraffin wax binder by the fixed high process condition because crack occurs at the beginning step. Therefore, here we studied variable condition debinding process that starts with mild process condition at the beginning step and then increase the process conditions simultaneously at each step. To find out the initial process condition that has the highest extraction yield without any defect for each sample thickness, we investigated various supercritical debinding conditions using 1-4 mm thickness ceramic injection molded sample. By using the variable condition debinding process that starts with the initial process condition at the first step and then increasing process conditions simultaneously at each step (temperature from 333.15 to 343.15 K, pressure from 12 to 27 MPa, and $CO_2$ flow rate from 1.5 to 10 L/min), over 95% of paraffin wax binder was removed from the 4 mm thick (10 mm diameter) ceramic injection molded disk samples within 5 hours.

Supercritical fluid chromatographic method was recommended as an alternative separation method of fatty acids of the conventional method such as distillation or extraction. Although diffusion characteristics are varied by the carbon numbers and the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids, the quantitative data were so rare that the commercialization of supercritical fluid chromatographic method has been hindered. In this study, diffusion coefficients of fatty acids which are differently unsaturated are measured by CPB method in the range of 308.15K to 328.15K and 13MPa to 17MPa in supercritical carbon dioxide. A decrease in the binary diffusion coefficient was observed with an increase in temperature and pressure. Also, the decrease in the binary diffusion coefficient with increasing fluid density and viscosity. Wilke-Chang equation, Funazukuri empirical equation, and Matthews-Akgerman equation are used to correlate the experimental diffusion coefficients of fatty acids in supercritical carbon dioxide. Among the various theoretical equations, Matthews-Akgerman equation based on RHS theory was suggested as a more successful correlation model with experimental data.

Capacity of the analytical/quantitative evaluation techniques to satisfy both qualitative and quantitative considerations for effective extraction of marigold oleoresins/xanthophylls and their potential as anti-mycotic and antioxidant activity was assessed. Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), Soxhlet extraction (SE), Supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE), Cold extraction (CE), and ultrasonically assisted extraction (USE) techniques were evaluated for extraction of oleoresin/xanthophyll content from Tagetes erecta (Var. Pusa Narangi Genda) with respect to solvent consumption, extraction time, reproducibility, and yield. Followed by the antifungal and antioxidant activity evaluation. The overall yield of Tagetes oleoresin was higher in ASE (64.5 g/kg) followed by SE (57.3 g/kg), USE (50.7 g/kg), SCFE (45.3 g/kg) and CE (31.6 g/kg). The lutein esters represented more than 80% of the constituents. Further, xanthophyll/ lutein content in oleoresin was found to be quite higher in HPLC (r2 = 0.996) analysis than in the AOAC recommended UV spectrophotometer analysis. The oleoresin exhibited moderate antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) and antifungal activity against three phytopathogenic fungi. Based on the various parameters, the reproducibility of ASE was better (0.3-8.0%) than that of SE (0.5-12.9%), SCFE (0.2-9.4%), USE (0.3-12.4%) and CE (0.8-15.3%). ASE with (RSD 1.6%) is preferred being faster, reproducible, uses less solvent, robust and automation allows sequential extraction of the sample in less time.
The technical feasibility of removing cholesterol from milk fat by supercritical carbon dioxide $(SC-CO_2)$ extraction followed by adsorption on different adsorbents and of fractionating milk fat into different fatty acid composition at $40^{\circ}C/276$ bar was investigated. Cholesterol could be selectively removed from milk fat by adsorption on a typical commercial florisil with $SC-CO_2$ extraction. Lower weight ratio of milk fat feed to florisil showed higher reduction of cholesterol, but gave lower yield in the milk fat fractions. The effective capacity of florisil for removing cholesterol from milk fat was 2.0g/g, which is the ratio of the fat feed to the adsorbent for 89% cholesterol reduction with a fat yield of 57.5%. Fatty acid composition showed higher short-chain and lower unsaturated long-chain fatty acids in the extracted fractions. Milk fat fractionation method by supercritical fluid extraction in coupled with adsorption would appear suitable for removing undesirable ingredients such as cholesterol and for enriching short-chain fatty acids in the fractions.
In order to develop a new separation technology, supercritical fluid extraction process was used to produce high purity pigments and fatty acids from seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida). Supercritical carbon dioxide was used as a solvent and ethanol as an entrainer. The sample was treated by a frozen drier and experiments were conducted with a semi-batch flow system at various operating conditions (pressure range, $10.3\~17.2$ MPa; temperature range, $30\~45^{\circ}C$: particle size, $500\~1,000{\mu}m$ extraction time, 60 min). Characteristics of the recovered pigment (chlorophyll a) and fatty acids were determined by UV-spectrophotometry and gas chromatography, respectively. The highest extraction efficiency for fatty acids and pigments was achieved at 12.4 MPa, $35^{\circ}C$, $500{\mu}m$of seaweed size.
Hydrolytic enzyme activities, including those of ${\beta}$-glucosidase, ${\beta}$-glucuronidase, ${\beta}$-xylosidase, ${\beta}$-galactosidase, ${\beta}$-arabinofuranosidase, ${\beta}$-arabinosidase, and ${\beta}$-arabinopyranosidase, which are useful for bioconversion, were explored in lactic acid bacteria isolated from Korean traditional fermented foods. Nine bacterial strains were selected for the fermentation of green tea extract prepared by supercritical fluid extraction. Changes in the concentrations of catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin-3-gallate in green tea extract were investigated after fermentation by the selected lactic acid bacteria strains. The strain Leuconostoc mesenteroides MBE1424, which showed the highest ${\beta}$-glucuronidase enzyme activity among the tested bacterial strains, increased the epigallocatechin content of the green tea extract by 60%. In addition, L. mesenteroides MBE1424 was more resistant than the control strain at high temperature and showed a maximum specific growth rate at $40^{\circ}C$. L. mesenteroides MBE1424 was presumed to have an enzyme system containing ${\beta}$-glucuronidase with utility in the bioconversion of green tea extract.
The study was carried out to determine the effect of storage property and qualities on soybean sauce and paste by adding different amount of pyroligneous liquor obtained by sujpercritical fluid extraction(SFE). Purified pyroligneous liquor obtained by SFE at 4$0^{\circ}C$/110 bar contained p-cresol, o-cresol and m-cresol food sterilizers, but no toxic substances such as tar, scorched, furfuraland and monophenol. Thus pyroligneous liquor was considered to be suitable as natural food preservative. In case of soybean sauce, pyroligneous liquor was tested to determine the potential of natual food preservative to prevent flim formation on soybean ksauce 15days at 3$0^{\circ}C$. Increasing amounts of purified pyroligneous liquor added to soybean sauce prevented film forming yeasts. In case of paste, pyroligneous liquor was tested to determine the potential of natural food preservative to inhibit browning on paste 60 days at 3$0^{\circ}C$. Purified pyroligneous liquor added to paste inhibited brown pigment. As a result, purified pyroligneous liquor offered a promising way of improving the quality and storage property of soybean sauce and paste.

Surface-active substances in defatted rapeseed cake were obtained using a supercritical fluid extraction method. Then, it was purified by removing sinapine in the extract through a series of steps using a mixed solvent: diethyl ether and ethyl acetate (1:1, v/v). Emulsifying properties of purified surface-active substances were investigated, including fat globule size, zeta potentials and creaming stability and its antioxidant activity in emulsion systems were also studied by peroxide value and $^1H$-NMR spectrum. It was found that fat globules in emulsions with purified surface-active substances were much smaller than ones with the unpurified. In addition, as pH of the emulsion lowered and with increasing NaCl concentration in the emulsion, they were observed to increase, which led to worse creaming stability. These properties were reflected in changes of zeta potentials of emulsions. The oxidative stability was better in emulsions with purified surface-active substances than ones with Tween 20 or commercial lecithin, possibly resulted from the existence of sinapic acid in the extract. It was concluded that purified surface-active substances from defatted rapeseed cake could be simultaneously used as emulsifier and antioxidant agent in emulsion system.

In this study, we prepared Eriobotrya japonica leaf extracts by several extraction processes and then evaluated their biological activities for their potential application as a new raw material of functional cosmetic. Their whitening effects were measured by tyrosinase inhibitory activities, and anti-inflammatory effects were determined by inhibitory activities of nitric oxide (NO) production. Among the several extracts obtained from E. japonica leaf, supercritical fluid extract showed tyrosinase inhibitory activities at the concentration of 10%. Inhibitory activity on NO production effect related to anti-inflammatory efficacy was in the order: supercritical fluid extract > ethanol extract > hot water extract. According to the results of MTT assay, cell cytotoxicity was not observed at all concentrations except for a 5% concentration of the 70% ethanol extract. For whitening effects, 30% ethanol and 70% ethanol extract showed mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity at the concentration of 5%. These results indicated that E. japonica leaf extracts could have the functional effects when they are added as ingredients in cosmetics.
