  • Removal of iron oxide scale from feed-water in thermal power plant can improve power generation efficiency. We have proposed a novel scale removal system utilizing High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS). This system can be applied to high temperature and pressure area. We have conducted the lab-scale model experiments using ${\varphi}50mm$ filters and it demonstrated high removal efficiency in HGMS, but scale-up of the system is required toward practical use. In this study, we conducted a large scale mock-up HGMS experiment. We used the superconducting solenoidal magnet with ${\varphi}400mm$ bore and demonstrated that our HGMS system can achieve sufficient scale removal capacity that is required to introduce into both off-line and on-line system.

  • Many superconductor applications such as MRI and SMES must be operated in persistent current mode to eliminate the electrical ohmic loss. This paper presents the characteristic analysis of the high temperature superconducting (HTS) power supply made of YBCO coated conductor (CC). In this research, we have manufactured the HTS power supply to charge the 0.73 mH HTS double-pancake magnet made of YBCO CC. Among the all design parameters, the heater triggerring time and magnet applying time were the most important factors for the best performance of the HTS power supply. In this paper, three-dimensional simulation through finite element method (FEM) was used to study the heat transfer in YBCO CC and the magnetic field of the magnetic circuit. Based upon these results, the final operational sequence could be determined to generate the pumping current. In the experiment, the maximum pumping current reached about 16 A.

  • Until now, many research activities have been conducted to commercialize high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wires for electric applications. Most of all researchers have focused on enhancing the piece length, critical current density, mechanical strength, and throughput of HTS wires. Recently, HTS magnet for generating high magnetic field shows degraded performance due to the deformation of HTS wire by high electro-magnetic force. The deformation can be derived from widthwise thickness non-uniformity of HTS wire mainly caused by wet processes such as electro-polishing of metal substrate and electro-plating of copper. Gradient sputtering process is designed to improve the thickness uniformity of HTS wire along the width direction. Copper stabilizing layer is deposited on HTS wire covered with specially designed mask. In order to evaluate the thickness uniformity of HTS wire after gradient sputtering process, the thickness distribution across the width is measured by using the optical microscope. The results show that the gradient deposition process is an effective method for improving the thickness uniformity of HTS wire.

  • Pollution of the environment by micro-plastics is now a worldwide problem. Plastics are difficult to decompose and put a great load on the marine environment. Especially a plastic with a size of 5 mm or less is defined as micro-plastic and are carried by ocean currents over long distances, causing global pollution. These are not easily decomposed in the natural environment. In this paper, we aimed to experimentally demonstrate that micro-plastics in seawater can be continuously separated by electromagnetic Archimedes force. Using polyethylene particles of 3 mm in diameter as the separation target, a flow channel was fabricated and separation conditions were investigated by particle trajectory calculations for separation experiments. Based on the calculation results, a solenoid-type superconducting magnet was used as a source of magnetic field to conduct separation experiments of micro-plastics in seawater. Although a high separation rate was assumed in the simulation results, the experimental results did not show any significant improvement in the separation rate due to the electromagnetic Archimedes force. It was found that the gas generated by the electrolytic reaction may have inhibited the migration of the particles.

  • According to the trend for electric power equipment of high capacity and reduction of its size, the needs for the new high performance electric equipments become more and more important. On of the possible solution is high temperature superconducting (HTS) power application. Following the successful development of practical HTS wires, there have been renewed activities in developing superconducting power equipment. HTS equipments have to be operated in a coolant such as liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) or cooled by conduction-cooling method such as using Gifford-McMahon (G-M) cryocooler to maintain the temperature below critical level. In this paper, the dielectric strength of some insulating materials, such as unfilled epoxy, filled epoxy, and polyimide in $LN_2$ was analyzed. Epoxy is a good insulating material but fragile at cryogenic temperature. The filled epoxy composite not only compensates for this fragile property but enhances its dielectric strength.

  • Following the successful development of practical high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires, there has been renewed activity in the development of superconducting power equipments. HTS equipments must be operated in the coolant, such as liquid nitrogen (L$N_2$) or cooled by cooler, such as GM-cryocooler to maintain the temperature below critical temperature. In this paper, dielectric strength of some insulating materials, such as epoxy, teflon, and glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) in L$N_2$was measured. Surface breakdown voltage of GFRP which is basic property in design of HTS solenoid coil was measured. Epoxy is a goof insulating material but it is fragile at cryogenic temperature. The multi-layer insulating method of current lead is suggested to compensate this fragile property. It consists of teflon tape layer and epoxy layer fixed with texture. Based on these measurements, the 6.6㎸ class HTS magnet for DC reactor type high-T$_{c}$ superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was successfully fabricated and tested.d.

  • It needs several large reservoirs and long time to remove suspended solid like steel fines and iron oxide in hot rolling coolant. If removing rate of suspended solid in rolling coolant is improved by using high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system, the productivity of working process can be increased and the area of reservoir can be reduced. Pre-treatment process that react magnetic floc with inorganic and organic flocculant in coolant was studied. Horizontal type superconducting HGMS system was manufactured successfully, which was constituted with automatic filter transportation apparatus, 6 T He-free superconducting magnet system and water circulation system. The solid suspension removal ratio in hot rolling coolant was increased by flocculation with inorganic and organic flocculant.

  • YBa2Cu3O7-y bulk as a high temperature oxide superconducting conductor has the high critical temperature of 92 K. YBa2Cu3O7-y bulk superconductors have been fabricated by a seeded melting growth. Magnetic properties were studied by using superconductor of melted YBa2Cu3O7-y oxides. It was demonstrated that Y2BaCuO5 particles acts as a pinning center which plays an important role on the magnetic properties. The thickness of the upper and lower pellets of the YBa2Cu3O7-y bulk was formed at 40 mm with 55 g of the composition, and the YBa2Cu3O7-y superconductor was manufactured through a heat treatment process. Manufacturing the superconducting bulk, it is possible to improve the pore density of the superconducting bulk by providing a path through which oxygen could be emitted.
