Circulating cooling systems consume a lot of water, and most of the water from river, which contains a large amount of Ca2+, Mg2+, et al, and has the characteristics of high hardness and large turbidity. The water can form scale on the surface of the heat exchanger and the pipes, which would reduce the heat transfer efficiency and affect the heat exchanger's length of service. In this study, the Superconducting High Gradient Magnetic Separation (S-HGMS) technology was used in river water treatment and the effects of agent A, agent B, and S-HGMS on the removal of hardness and turbidity were discussed. The results showed that the hardness removal rate reached 71.3% and the turbidity was decreased to 0.5 NTU.
This study introduced waste water treatment method applied superconductor HGMS(High Gradient Magnetic Separation). HGMS method treat high efficient method for various waste water. we have surveyed superconducting magnetic separation technology and reviewed the status of related industries using applied superconductivity. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system. In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS, it was made clear that the fine para-magnetic particles in the rolling colling wasted water obtained from rolling process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.

Comprehensive utilization of sulfur-containing iron tailings (SIT) not only solves environmental problems but also creates certain economic value. The iron element from SIT was enriched by the superconducting high gradient magnetic separation (S-HGMS) technology in this study. In the experiments, the total iron content (TFe) was increased from 26.3% to 60.5% with the total sulfur content (TS) of 5.9% under the optimal parameters, i.e., a magnetic flux density of 0.4 T, a slurry flow rate of 1500 mL/min. The high-quality sulfur-containing material with TFe of more than 60% was obtained, which can be used for preparing high-sulfur free cutting steel. The S-HGMS technology can realize the resource utilization of iron tailings with high added value.
In recent years, the impact of microplastics (MPs) on ecosystems is a serious problem. Since MPs are difficult to recover once they are dispersed into the environment, it is important to remove them at the source. We proposed a magnetic separation of primary MPs (plastics manufactured in minute sizes) sized 10-100 ㎛ that has not been removed in the sewage process, based on the magnetic seeding process. In this study, we used magnetite as a magnetic seeding agent, and conducted magnetic separation experiments in the continuous process using a superconducting solenoidal magnet to investigate the feasibility of practical magnetic separation system of MPs. As a result, 85% separation rate was obtained by continuous separation using high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) with hydrophobically treated magnetite as a magnetic seeding agent.
It is needed several large reservoirs and long time in order to remove suspended solid like steel fines and iron oxide at steel making factory. If removing rate of suspended solid in rolling coolant is improved, the productivity of working process can be increased and the area of reservoir can be reduced. Pre-treatment to add extra magnetization of suspended solid was studied Iron hydroxide and electrolytic dissociation were used for pretreatment. High gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system was used for removing of magnetized suspended solid. Removing ratio showed over than 99% in the coolant containing magnetic fines. Magnetic properties of suspended solid were investigated after mixed with Al2(SO2)3 and organic flocculant by using electrochemical treatment.
There are a few thousand abandoned metal mines in South Korea. The abandoned mines cause several environmental problems including releasing acid mine drainage (AMD), which contain a very high acidity and heavy metal ions such as Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb, and As. Iron oxides can be formed from the AMD by increasing the solution pH and inducing precipitation. Current study focused on the formation of iron oxide in an AMD and used the oxide for adsorption of heavy metals. The heavy metal adsorbed iron oxide was separated with a superconducting magnet. The duration of iron oxide formation affected on the type of mineral and the degree of magnetization. The removal rate of heavy metal by the adsorption process with the formed iron oxide was highly dependent on the type of iron oxide and the solution pH. A high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system successfully separated the iron oxide and harmful heavy metals.
The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions becomes a global issue, the main source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Asian region is the energy conversion sector, especially coal-fired power plants. We are working to develop technologies that will at least limit the increase in carbon dioxide emissions from the thermal power plants as one way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Our research aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by removing iron oxide scale from the feedwater system of thermal power plants using a superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system, thereby reducing the loss of power generation efficiency. In this paper, the background of thermal power plants in Asia is outlined, followed by a case study of the introduction of a chemical cleaning line at an actual thermal power plant in Japan, and the possibility of introducing it into the thermal power plants in China based on the results.
The Magnetic Force Control MFC technology is very useful because of its physical treatment process. Especially the Magnetic Separation MS technology is expected to contribute to SDGs 2030, Circular Economy and Carbon neutral 2050 realization. This paper describes the review of the IFMFC activity from 2010.The IFMFC is organized by three local committees of researchers in Japan, China and Korea. The IFMFC aims to exchange the information of the development results using the MFC technology and to educate the young researchers. The forum has been held in every year around three countries. In 2020 and 2021, the forum was organized by Zoom online due to the COVID-19. The 134 presentations were made up to 2020.The breakdown of these presentations are categorized to the environment remediation52%, material resource37% and fundamental research/technology11%. The Super Conducting Magnet SCM development promotes the MFC technologies. There are some impressive backgrounds as to the brilliant SM technology applications for many different magnetism ; SCM development, High Gradient Magnetic Separation HGMS, magnetic seeding method and magneto-Archimedes effect. This paper reviews the IFMFC activity according to those presented presentations.
