  • We report the current limiting properties of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL). Our SFCL was patterned in a spiral type on a YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-x}$(YBCO) film deposited using rf sputtering techniques and was coated with a gold shunt layer in order to disperse the heat generated at hot spots in the YBCO film. Current increased up to 13.5 $A_{peak}$ at 60 Hz for the voltage of 13 $V_{peak}$, which is the minimum quench point, and increased up to 17.6 $A_{peak}$ at 60 Hz fo the voltage fo 141.4 $V_{peak}$. The quench completion time was 5 msec at 13 $V_{peak}$ and 4 msec at 141. $V_{peak}$ respectively. we think that this architecture using spiral-type SFCL can be useful for the protection of the power delivery systems from fault currents.s. currents.s.

  • A fault current limitation using fault current limiter(FCL) is very important for power system operation. In recent year, a number of research have been performed and still Progressing about the super conducting fault current limiter(SFCL), To protect the power system effectively from the large fault current, several superconducting fault current limiters proposed. However, there are many problem such as cost, recovery and ac loss. To solve these problems, hybrid superconducting fault current limiter(HSFCL) have been proposed. In this paper, HSFCL are modeled using (Electro Magnetic Transient Program - Restructured Version) EMTP-RV.

  • we compared the operating characteristics between flux-lock type and resistive type superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs). Flux-lock type SFCL consists of two coils, which are wound in parallel each other through an iron core, and a high-Tc superconducting(HTSC) element is connected with coil 2 in series. The the flux-lock type SFCL can be divided into the subtractive polarity winding and the additive polarity winding operations according to the winding directions between the coil 1 and coil 2. It was confirmed from experiments that flux-lock type SFCL could improve both the quench characteristics and the transport capacity compared to the resistive type SFCL, which means, the independent operation of HTSC element.

  • The Active Superconducting Current Controller (ASCC) is a new type of Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCL) which can limit the fault current in different modes. It also has the particular abilities of compensating active and reactive powers for electrical networks. In this paper, it is confirmed that the performance of ASCC in different operating modes introduces a limiting impedance in series with the network which can even degrade the transient stability and the operation of the Over-Current Relays (OCR) employed in a power system. In addition, the model of a three-phase ASCC is simulated, and the effect of descriptive modes on the current limiting level is investigated. For the transient stability analysis, a single machine-infinite bus system is tested, and the effect of operation modes is studied based on an equal area criterion obtaining the critical time and the critical angle. Modifying the setting parameters of OCR such as time dial and pick-up current, the protective coordination is also studied in different operating modes.

  • The current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) were investigated. The flux-lock type SFCL consists of a flux-lock reactor and high-T_c superconducting (HTSC) element. In this SFCL the initial limiting current level can be controlled by adjusting the inductances of two coils. In this paper, the operational characteristics of the flux-lock type SPCL were analyzed and the current Limiting characteristics of it were investigated through the experiments.

  • We analysed the operating properties of resistive type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on YBCO thin films with a single line-to-ground fault. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred, the short circuit current of a fault phase increased up to about 6 times of transport currents immediately after the fault instant and was effectively limited to the designed current level within 2 ms by the resistance development of the SFCL. The fault currents of the sound phases almost did not change because of their direct grounding system. The unsymmetrical rates of a fault phase were distributed from 6.4 to 1.4. It was found that the unsymmetrical rates of currents were noticeably improved within one cycle after the fault instant. We calculated the zero phase currents for a single line-to-ground fault using the symmetrical component analysis. The positive sequence resistance was reduced remarkably right after the fault but eventually approached the balanced positive resistance component prior to the system fault. This means that the system reaches almost the three-phase symmetrical state in about 60 ㎳ after the fault. The ground currents were almost 3 times of the zero phase mts since most of the fault currents flowed through the grounding line.

  • The high-tc superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) are studied worldwide to be classified as resistive type or inductive type such as magnetic shielding type and dc reactor type. This Paper deals with an open core type SFCL, a kind of magnetic shielding type SFCL. We manufactured a 30 kVA open core type SFCL. It was modified from the old one with a rated power of 8 kVA. We stacked four superconducting tubes as magnetic shielding material and used the same primary winding as the old one. The experiments were performed with a maximum source voltage of 1 kV. The results show that the fault current in the source voltage of 1 kVrms was reduced to be about 105 Apeak, which was calculated to be about 22 % of the fault current in the system without an SFCL.
