In order to evade the premature failure of super duplex stainless steels (SDSSs) in some harsh environments, the increase of their mechanical properties is a promising approach. In this study, based on the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technique, SDSS matrix composites without post heat treatment were fabricated by using the powder mixture of SDSSs, super austenitic stainless steels (SASSs) and micron-sized TiC particles. Many in-situ TiCxNy nanoparticles were found to be formed by using micron-sized TiC particles in as-built composites, and both fine ferrite and austenite grains were generated. The as-built composites exhibited an excellent combination of high ultimate tensile strength (UTS) (~1066 MPa) and good uniform elongation (UE) (~15.6%), showing a better mechanical property compared with other reported LPBF-fabricated SDSSs, which was mainly attributed to the fine grain, Orowan and dislocation strengthening mechanisms. In particular, the successful fabrication of SDSS matrix composites can set the stage for producing high-performance metallic parts via LPBF technique.
Super duplex stainless steels have been used for offshore oil and gas piping systems which are subject to corrosion atmosphere, because they have excellent resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and Pitting corrosion and high strength/weight ratio. Normally, the welding for duplex stainless steels has been peformed using GTAW with Ar shielding gas. However, in case of using Ar as shielding gas, the corrosion resistance at root weld metal will be deteriorated due to loss of nitrogen from weld deposit during welding. It is wellknown that the corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless can be restored by addition of nitrogen as shielding gas. In this study, we made super duplex welding with using several kinds of shielding and purging gases and investigated the relationship between shielding gas and corrosion resistance. Consequently, it was shown that corrosion resistance of weld deposit can be restored by addition of $N_{2}$ as shielding gas.
Effects of rare earth metals addition and aging treatment on corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of super duplex stainless steels were investigated using optical/SEM/TEM metallographic examination, an X-ray diffraction test, a potentiodynamic anodic polarization test and a tensile test. The performance of the experimental alloy with 0.32% REM addition was compared with commercial super duplex stainless steel such as SAF 2507 when they were exposed to solution annealing heat treatment and aging treatment. The corrosion resistance in CF environments and mechanical properties of the experimental alloy were found superior to those of the commercial duplex stainless steel. The REM with larger atomic radii than those of Cr, Mo and W may fill vacancies inside the matrix and around the grain boundaries, retarding formation of harmful intermetallic σ and χ phases. In addition, fine REM oxides/oxy-sulfides (1-3㎛) seemed to enhance the retardation effects. With REM additions, strength and ductility increased due to the phase and grain refinement caused by fine REM oxides and oxy-sulfides.
Superduplex stainless steels are important materials to the oil and gas industry, especially for off-shore production. TIG welding of super duplex stainless steels to obtain the optimal phase balance between austenite and ferrite is mainly achieved by controlling the cooling rate and the weld chemistry. The latter depends on the filler wire chosen and the shielding gas used. If TIG welding of superduplex stainless steels is performed with argon shielding gas only, then nitrogen gets lost from the weld pool, which can result in a ferrite-rich weld metal, with an inferior corrosion resistance than parent metal. In the present study, nitrogen permeation model from the shield gas which gets into the weld metal in DCEN-TIG welding has suggested. This plasma stream model shows characteristics of permeation of nitrogen ions into the molten metal due to the strong physical effect of plasma stream which formed by the arc pressure rather than the permeation of nitrogen ions caused by electric effect.
Hyper duplex stainless steels have been developed in Korea for the purpose of application to the seawater system of Korean nuclear power plants. This system supplies seawater to cooling water heat exchanger tubes, related pipes and chlorine injection system. In normal operation, seawater is supplied to heat exchanger through the exit of circulating water pump headers, and the heat exchanged sea water is extracted to the discharge pipes in circulating water system connected to the circulating water discharge lines. The high flow velocity of some part of seawater system in nuclear power plants accelerates damages of components. Therefore, high strength and high corrosion resistant steels need to be applied for this environment. Hyper duplex stainless steel (27Cr-7.0Ni-2.5Mo-3.2W-0.35N) has been newly developed in Korea and is being improved for applying to nuclear power plants. In this study, the physical & mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of newly developed materials are quantitatively evaluated in comparative to commercial stainless steels in other countries. The properties of weld & HAZ (heat affected zone) are analyzed and the best compositions are suggested. The optimum conditions in welding process are derived for ensuring the volume fraction of ferrite(${\alpha}$) and austenite(${\gamma}$) in HAZ and controlling weld cracks. For applying these materials to the seawater heat exchanger, CCT and CPT in weldments are measured. As a result of all experiments, it was found that the newly developed hyper duplex stainless steel WREMBA has higher corrosion resistance and mechanical properties than those of super austenitic stainless steels including welded area. It is expected to be a promising material for seawater systems of Korean nuclear power plants.
This study aims to investigate the effects of tungsten additions on the microstructure, corrosion characteristics, and hardness of super duplex stainless steel heat-treated at two different annealing temperatures. Under the annealing temperature of 1100℃, the microstructure of the stainless steels consisted mainly of ferrite, while under the annealing temperature of 1000℃, significant amounts of austenite and secondary phases were also observed. In terms of corrosion characteristics in 3.5 wt%NaCl solution, there was not a significant difference due to W addition at the 1100℃ conditions. However, at the 1000℃, a tendency of decreased corrosion resistance was observed with increasing the tungsten content. On the other hand, the micro-hardness of the stainless steel heat-treated 1000℃ showed an increasing trend with tungsten addition. This increase can be mainly attributed to the higher fraction of secondary phases, primarily sigma, known for their high hardness.

The effect of aging on the precipitation of the $\sigma$ phase and the corrosion resistance in tungsten substituted super duplex stainless steels was investigated. The volume fraction of the $\sigma$ phase and the current density increased with aging at temperatures up to $750^{\circ}C$ and then decreased. With an increase in aging time, the volume fraction of the $\sigma$ phase and the current density also increased. The $\sigma$ phase hardly influenced the corrosion resistance. With the substitution of tungsten for molybdenum in super duplex stainless steel, the volume fraction of the $\sigma$ phase and the current density decreased remarkably.
Austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 316L have been used in equipment in which fluid flows at high speeds which can induce cavitation erosion on metallic surfaces due to the collapse of cavities, where the collapse is caused by the sudden change of local pressure within the liquid. Usually AISI 316L is susceptible to cavitation erosion. This research focuses on developing a better material to replace the AISI 316L used in equipment with high speed fluid flow, such as impellers. The effects of Rare Earth Metal (REM) additions on the cavitation erosion-corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steels were studied using metallographic examination, the potentiodynamic anodic polarization test, the tensile test, the X-ray diffraction test and the ultrasonic cavitation erosion test. The experimental alloys were found to have superior mechanical properties due to interstitial solid solution strengthening, by adding high nitrogen (0,4%), as well as by the refinement of phases and grains induced by fine REM oxides and oxy-sulfides. Corrosion resistance decreases in a gentle gradient as the REM content increases. However, REM containing alloys show superior corrosion resistance compared with that of other commercial alloys (SAF 2507, AISI 316L). Owing to their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, the alloys containing REM have high cavitation erosion-corrosion resistance.

The objective of this study was to analyze effects of aging time on property degradation of super austenitic stainless steel of PRE 52.8 and super duplex stainless steel of PRE 48.7. To analyze corrosion properties based on aging time, a critical pitting temperature test was performed in a solution of 6% FeCl3 + 1% HCl and an anodic polarization test was performed in deaerated 0.5N HCl + 1N NaCl solution at a temperature of 50 ℃. Surface hardness was measured to analyze mechanical properties. It was found that corrosion properties and mechanical properties deteriorated rapidly as aging time increased. Critical pitting temperature had the most effect on critical aging time at which property changes occurred rapidly, followed by pitting potential and hardness. This trend was found to be closely related to the fraction of sigma phase. Rate of sigma phase formation was found to be significantly faster in duplex stainless steel than in austenitic stainless steel.
