The aim of this study is to evaluate several plant extracts with a view to developing UV sunscreen agents. In this study, 150 plant extracts were screened to elucidate their UV spectra using spectrophotometric method. Several plant extracts such as Phellodendron amurense, Morus alba, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Brassica alba have strong absorbency at UVA region (350nm), the suntanning wavelength. And Sophora flavescens, Caesalpinia sapper, Morus alba, Phellodendron amurense, showed absorption plateau value at UVB region (308nm), the erythema action wavelength. These extracts have a good absorbency property as synthetic filter and could be served as substitutes for synthetic UV sunscreen agents.
In these days sun products are developed and produced by the cosmetic scientists in the world. Peoples need strongly to protect themselves from the hazardous UV rays dued to the destruction of ozone layer. Therfore, we, cosmetic scientists must have an effort to produce the more effective goods. In this article the market survey of sun-products as well as the currency of sunscreen agents was investigated. It was found that Benzophenone - 3 and Ocytyl methoxy cinnamate were widely used. The lotions, using Benzophenone - 3 as the chemical agents, and TiO$_2$and micro TiO$_2$ as the physical agents, were measured the UV-Spectrum in the Dilution and Application method. Photoprotective activity of chemical agents can usually be measured in solution state. However, that of the insoluble physical agents such as TiO$_2$is hardly measured in this state. Photoprotective ability of the insoluble physical agents was able to be measured by application of lotions to the surface of UV cells. It was found by this method that micro TiO$_2$showd stronger UV scattering effect than TiO$_2$in this method.

This study evaluated SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of various quntity and kind of sunscreen ingredients which is used in O/W and W/O emulsion by systematic and quantitative approach. Octylmethoxycinnamate(OMC), Buthylmethoxydibenzoylmethan (BMDM), Octocrylene (OC), Octylsalicylate(OS), Octyl Triazone (OT), Titanium dioxide (TD) are used for the experiment. As a result, when different chemical sunscreen ingredients are added to OMC, the synergy effect of SPF was high in order of BMDM, OC, OS, OT. There was no significant difference in O/W and W/O emulsions. It can be a guide to use sunscreen ingredients effectively when the relation between the results of in vitro SPF and in vivo SPF is comprehended.
This study examined the ultraviolet-A blocking effect and antioxidant activity of Gracilariopsis chorda extract for use as sunscreen agents in cosmetics. The maximum absorbance at ultra violet-A320-330 and transmissivity was 20-80%. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)radical scavenging activity of Gracilariopsis chorda extract was 68?96% and increased with the sample concentration. This indicates that Gracilariopsis chorda extract is a promising natural compound that could be useful as a sunscreen.

In this study, 27 inorganic sunscreens and 23 sunscreens for children were collected to investigate the use and incorporation of 17 types of sunscreen agents, 13 types of preservatives, and 5 types of heavy metals. As a result, sunscreen agents were detected in the order of titanium dioxide (41 cases), zinc oxide (29 cases), bis-ethylhexyloxyphenyltriazine (10 cases), ethylhexyl salicylate (8 cases), and ethylhexylmethoxynamate (8 cases), and preservatives were detected in order of phenoxyethanol (6 cases), benzoic acid (1 case), and dihydroacetic acid(1 case). All of the identified sunscreen agents were suitable for labeling, but phenoxyethanol, a preservative component other than labeling, was detected at a concentration of 0.1%. Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, and nickel were not detected or were detected at various concentrations of less than 3.6 ㎍/g. All the detected UV filters, preservatives, and heavy metals were less than the allowed maximum amount stipulated by the Regulations on Cosmetic Safety Standards in Korea.

In this study, we tried the various experiments using the emulsifier, electrolyte, stabilizer and gelling agent in order to improve a stability of low viscosity W/O emulsion. As a result, when we used polyglyceryl-4 diisostearate/polyhydroxystearate/sebacate as a main emulsifier, PEG-30 dipolyhydroxystearate and cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone as a co-emulsifier for stable emulsification system, 0.5 % sodium chloride as an electrolyte, 1 % distearyldimonium chloride as a stabilizer, 0.5 % glyceryl behenate/eicosadioate as an oil gelling agent, emulsion particle is the best. Also, we got the stable and low viscosity W/O emulsion maintained at a constant viscosity at 2,000 cps or less. In addition, we were able to examine the possibility of development of low viscosity fluids type sunscreens with excellent feeling and stability through the application of inorganic sunscreen agents.

This study was carried out to develop a stable plant-derived natural sunscreen (BHC-S) that replaces the artificially synthesized organic sunscreen agents. The natural sunscreen (BHC-S), which is composed of peanut extract, Centella asiatica extract, and Ecklonia stolonifera extract, has the same level of ultraviolet shielding effect as PARSOL MCX-XR (OMC), which is a synthetic sunscreen. and has safety against skin. MultiFunctional effect such as and anti-wrinkle improvement. Thus, it can be used as raw material for natural cosmetics for ultraviolet ray blocking, and anti-aging.

The simultaneous analysis of sun screen agents in commercial cosmetic samples was carried out by High Perfomance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC). The cosmetic samples are directly dissolved in Tetrahydrofurane(THF) and filtered using $0.45{\mu}m$ filter. The water/methanol/THF was used for the mobile phase of gradient conditions. An Extend C18 reversed-phase column and the selected UV/Visible detector was applied. The analysis results of HPLC showed good linearity with correlation coefficient of $r^2$=0.9992 in the rage of $50{\sim}800{\mu}g/mL$ and detection limit of $0.01{\mu}g/mL$.
Plant extracts have been studied due to their potential as photoprotective agents against UV and blue light exposure. Previous studies have revealed that several plant extracts have photoprotection capacities and synergistic effects with synthetic products. However, such results for pu'er tea and Curcuma longa L. have not been reported yet for a cosmetic formulation. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate photoprotection capacities of pu'er tea and C. longa L. extracts for a sunscreen compound. The pu'er tea extract improved sun protection factor value of 2-ethyl-hexyl methoxycinnamate (a synthetic sunscreen compound) by 46% and showed a high antioxidant capability that could help skin recover from photo-induced damage. C. longa L. extract also showed a potential to protect skin from blue light-induced damage because it not only had a maximum absorption peak at the blue light range, but also protected human fibroblasts from blue light-induced damage. The addition of both extracts shifted the critical wavelength of 2-ethyl-hexyl methoxycinnamate from 350 nm to 386 nm, giving it a broad-spectrum feature. Thus, pu'er tea and C. longa L. extracts may enhance the photoprotection ability of synthetic sunscreen products.
The incidence of skin cancer has continuously increased in Korea, probably due to sun exposure and increases in the aging population. Ultraviolet light, a well-known risk factor for skin cancer, can cause DNA damage, mutation, and immune suppression, followed by abnormal proliferation. To prevent photocarcinogenesis, the appropriate use of sunscreen should be emphasized. Using broad-spectrum sunscreens with sun protection factor values of 15 or higher and frequent reapplication are recommended. Controversy exists about whether vitamin D synthesis is inhibited by the use of sunscreen. However, considering that skin cancer most commonly develops on the head and neck area, applying it to the face and neck is reasonable in terms of balancing the risk-benefit ratio.
