  • When the 60-ton-class patrol boat '72' of the Korea Coast Guard (KCG) was on duty and she accidentally collided with another patrol boat ('207', 200-ton-class) and sank. A month-long search found a small amount of lost items, but neither the crew nor the ship was found. For the first time in 39 years since the accident, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) searched the boat 72 using the latest integrated geophysical techniques. A number of sonar images presumed to be of a sunken ship was acquired using a combined system of side scan sonar and marine magnetometer, operated at an altitude of approximately 30 m from the seabed. At the same time, a strong magnetic anomaly (100 nT) was detected in one place, indicating the presence of an iron ship. A video survey using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) confirmed the presence of a shielding part of a personal firearm at the stern of the sunken vessel. Based on these comprehensive data, the sunken vessel discovered in this exploration was assumed to be '72'. This result is meaningful in terms of future ocean exploration and underwater archaeology, as the integrated system of various geophysical methods is an efficient means of identifying objects present in the water.

  • This study was examined for purposes of identifing woods of the hull construction collected from a sunken old-ship by the anatomical wood features, and then from the result the geographical distribution ranges of the species were described. Most woods of the hull construction, i.e. shell plating, bulkhead, floor, bulwark, deck and kneel were identified with Chinese red pine (Pinus massoniana), but the fenders were idendified with Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata). These two species are known to be the endemic species in the south region of Yangtze River. As the other materials, bulwark stays and liquid tank stays were respectively identified with Cinnamomum spp., Distylium spp., and the geographical distributions of these species are the south China, the south coast of Korea and the Japanese Islands.

  • In the maritime digital forensic part, it is very important and difficult process that analysis of data and information with vessel navigation system's binary log data for situation awareness of maritime accident. In recent years, analysis of vessel's navigation system's trajectory information is an essential element of maritime accident investigation. So, we made an experiment about corruption with various memory device in navigation system. The analysis of corruption test in seawater give us important information about the valid pulling time of sunken ship for acquirement useful trajectory information.

  • This research does by purpose that present safe navigation plan for ships during doing dredging construction with dredger crossing waterway of Gadeok. Dredging operations need to build sunken tunnel that cross the bottom of the sea under waterway of Gadeok for access road construction between Busan- Geoje. Accordingly, dredger must cross and dredge waterway of Gadeok fatally. There is possibility of marine accident of collision for latent danger situation of ships to navigate waterway of Gadeok relatively. Therefore, safe navigation plan of ship is groped in reply and its countermeasure is presented.

  • Cultural property Preservation Bureau of Korea excavated the massive shipwreck and her cargo from 1976 to 1984 sunken under Jeungdo Island, Sinan County located int eh southwest area of the Korean peninsula. It was the first systematic underwater excavation in Korea, and one of the richest underwater discovery int eh world. According to the reference materials, more treasure shipwrecks are assumed to be sunk under seaside of Korean peninsula. Such as, Donskoy near Ulleung Island, Kow Shing near Ul Island, and yamashita treasure ship off Korean peninsula, etc. The excavations of these treasure ship are likely to raise ownership dispute between private finders and government authority, and between ship owner and excavater due to lack of knowledge and awareness of related laws and regulation. Therefore, this study aims to examine existing legal regimes related to the excavated treasureship. And also it tries to suggest a new proactive measure to prevent the most likely ownership disputes between interested parties.

Firstly, navigating traffic in daytime was forecasted less than 20% of its maximum capacity through estimating the traffic volume and traffic congestion The proposal was presented to execute dredging operations in three-step and to establish temporary waterway after reviewing waterway design principles. The role of VTS center was emphasized in the new Busan Port, lastly.

  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for analyzing each 10elements(Cu, Pb, Sn, Zn, Sb, Fe, Ni, Ag, Co and Mn)on 64 Chinese coinsre covered from Shinan seabed sunken ship. The results show that Cu, Pb and Sn were found to be a major elements consisting of coins and its composition ratio was 6 to 2 to 1.The composition of trace elements on coins was classified 3 levels : Sb, Fe and Zn(0.02%-2.2%), Ag, Ni, and Co(50 ppm-5500 ppm) and Mn(Trace). Theam ount of major elements, Cu and Sn were decreased while increased in Pbby the passage of ages (10th - 13th century) in China. There seems to be no systematic compositional change in major elements but content in trace elements was confirmed to increase with age.

  • In order to improve navigational safety of ships, an ocean wave prediction model of high precision within a short time, dealing with multi-directional random waves from the information of the sea surface winds encountered at the planned ship's course, was introduced for construction of ocean wave forecasting system on the ship. In this paper, we investigated a sea disaster occurred by a stormy weather in the past. We analyzed the sea surface wind first and then carried out ocean wave hindercasting simulations according to the routes the sunken vessel. From the result of this study, we concluded that the sea disaster was caused by rapidly developed iou pressure system Okhotsk Sea and the predicted values by the third generation wave prediction model(WAM) was agreed well with the observed significant wave height, wave period, and directional wave spectrum. It gives a good applicability for construction of a practical on-board calculation system.
