Bikini, a brief two-piece bathing suit revealing the wearer's navel, was first introduced in Paris, in 1946. However, it was not until the late 1950s that Americans were ready to adopt bikinis. Therefore, I focused on the following research questions to understand the popularization process of bikinis in the United States, from 1946 to the 1960s: 1. Why were Americans initially hesitant to adopt the bikini? 2. What were the factors that influenced the popularization of the bikini among Americans in the late 1950s? Primary sources including Bazaar. Madmoiselle, Vogue, The New York Times, and Life were reviewed. I referred to secondary sources on the history of fashion and American popular culture to interpret primary sources. According to the primary sources, Americans were hesitant to adopt the bikini, partly due to the excessive demand on the wearer's figure. However, the conservative social atmosphere during Cold War would not accept immorality and obscenity which would threaten America's future. Therefore, the campaigns against the sex industry, which developed prominently after WWII, predominated American society during the 1950s. Under this atmosphere, a small number of pictures and articles on bikinis appeared in the primary sources. Bikinis were only found in advertisements including sun lotions and hair removers. However, American society had to accept the change in sexual mores by the end of the 1930s. Body-revealing fashions including miniskirts, hot pants, and see-through material reflected the change in social convention. By the end of the 1950s, the number of pictures and articles on bikinis also began to increase in the primary sources. More Americans adopted bikinis with the increasing number of private pools and European trips. The vogue of sun-tanning and movies featuring bikinis further contributed to their popularity in the late 1930s and into the 1960s.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of atmosphere-leaf vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in Allium microdictyon Prokh. and Allium ochotense Prokh. The vapor pressure deficit (VPD) was rapidly increased with increasing temperature and decreasing relative humidity. Taken as a whole, the stomatal transpiration reaction was slightly late with increading of VPD. Maximum photosynthetic rate at high-VPD condition was 5.98 ${\mu}mol$$CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ in Allium microdictyon, which was a little lower than 6.59 ${\mu}mol$$CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ in Allium ochotense, respectively. After 2 p.m, stomatal transpiration of Allium microdictyon at the high VPD condition were rapidly decreased. Ci/Ca began to decline sharply at 8 a.m and showed the lowest value at 2 p.m, The results showed that Ci/Ca decreased with being used $CO_2$ in the mesophyll intercellular space for photosynthesis. In high VPD condition, The water potential values showed the highest at 5 a.m, and the lowest at 1 p.m in high VPD condition. The water saturation deficits (WSD) in high VPD condition showed about 1.5 times higher than in low VPD condition. The results indicated that physiological activities in Allium microdictyon is more limited from high VPD conditions.
The number of cases exceeding environmental standards of atmospheric ozone in the major cities in Korea has steadily increased during the past decades. In order to understand and analyze the atmospheric reactions in the atmosphere, especially the secondary photochemical reactions, smog chambers studies have been performed very actively by many research groups worldwide. However, these studies have focused on the mechanism of photochemical reactions in high concentration conditions, not at the ambient levels. Therefore, in-depth studies in these conditions are essentially needed to realize exact mechanism in the atmosphere near the earth surface, especially at Korean atmospheric conditions. In this experiment, the mechanism of photochemical smog was examined through a comparative experiment of smog chambers under sun light and black light conditions. The results of our study indicated that concentrations of ozone, aldehyde, and PAN increased as the radiation of light source increases. Photochemical reaction patterns can be considered quite similar for both black light and sun light experiments. Based on our experiments using toluene as a reactant which is present at significant high levels in ambient air relative to other VOCs, it was found that toluene could contribute notably to oxidize NO to $NO_2$, this reaction can eventually generate some other photochemical oxidants such as ozone, aldehyde, and PAN. The results of simulation and experiments generally showed a good agreement quite well except for the case of $O_3$. The restriction of oxidization of NO to $NO_2$ seems to cause this difference, which is mainly from the reaction of peroxy radical itself and other reactants in the real gas.

The effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP; 30% $CO_2$+70% $N_2$ or 100% $N_2$) and an additive mixture (500 ppm rosemary extract, 3,000 ppm sodium acetate and 1,500 ppm calcium lactate) on the quality of pre-cooked hamburger patties during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 14 d was evaluated. The addition of the additive mixture reduced aerobic and anaerobic bacteria counts in both 30% $CO_2$-MAP (30% $CO_2$+70% $N_2$) and 100% $N_2$-MAP (p<0.05). The 30% $CO_2$-MAP was more effective to suppress the microbial growth than 100% $N_2$-MAP, moreover the 30% $CO_2$-MAP combined with additive mixture resulted in the lowest bacterial counts. The hamburger patties with additive mixture showed lower CIE $L^*$ and CIE $a^*$, and higher CIE $b^*$ than those with no additive mixture. The 30% $CO_2$-MAP tended to decrease the TBARS during storage regardless of the addition of additives. The use of 30% $CO_2$-MAP in combination with additives mixture was effective for maintaining the quality and extending the shelf-life of pre-cooked hamburger patties.

Climate models, both global and regional, have increased in sophistication and are being run at increasingly higher resolutions. The Land Surface Models (LSMs) coupled to these climate models have evolved from simple bucket models to sophisticated Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) schemes needed to support complex linkages and processes. However, some underpinnings of terrestrial hydrologic parameterizations so crucial in the predictions of surface water and energy fluxes cause model errors that often manifest as non-linear drifts in the dynamic response of land surface processes. This requires the improved parameterizations of key processes for the terrestrial hydrologic scheme to improve the model predictability in surface water and energy fluxes. The Common Land Model (CLM), one of state-of-the-art LSMs, is the land component of the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). However, CLM also has energy and water biases resulting from deficiencies in some parameterizations related to hydrological processes. This research presents the implementation of a selected set of parameterizations and their effects on the runoff prediction. The modifications consist of new parameterizations for soil hydraulic conductivity, water table depth, frozen soil, soil water availability, and topographically controlled baseflow. The results from a set of offline simulations are compared with observed data to assess the performance of the new model. It is expected that the advanced terrestrial hydrologic scheme coupled to the current CLM can improve model predictability for better prediction of runoff that has a large impact on the surface water and energy balance crucial to climate variability and change studies.

Applications of CdS films in this study are to exhibit a high conductivity when they are exposed at light with visible wavelength and sequentially to show a low conductivity in dark state. For this purpose, CdS films should have a high photosensitivity, still maintaining a high conductivity at a visible light. In this study, CdS films were prepared at room temperature on glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering. In order to increase the photo-conductivity in visible light, various defect levels should be located within the CdS band gap. In order to nucleate the defect sites within the CdS band gap, CdS films were deposited on glass substrates at room temperature using various $H_2$/(Ar+$H_2$) flow ratios by an rf magnetron sputtering. Through the investigation of the structural and photoconductive properties of CdS films by an addition of hydrogen, the relationship between photo- and dark-resistance in CdS films was investigated in detail. 200-nm-thick CdS films for photoconductive sensor applications were prepared at various $H_2$/(Ar+$H_2$) flow ratios on glass substrates at room temperature by rf magnetron sputtering. Sulfur concentration in CdS films crystallized at room temperature with (002) preferred orientation depends directly on the hydrogen atmosphere and the surface roughness of the films gradually increases with increasing hydrogen atmosphere. Films deposited at 8% of $H_2$/(Ar+$H_2$) exhibit an abrupt decrease of dark- and photo-resistance, showing a low photo-sensitivity ($R_{dark}/R_{photo}$). Onthe other hand, films deposited at a hydrogen atmosphere of 42% exhibit a photo-sensitivity of $5\times10^3$, maintaining a photo-resistance of an approximately $2\times10^4\Omega$/square. The dark- and photo-resistance values of CdS films were related with a composition, surface roughness, and defect sites within the band gap.

The refraction phenomenon of radio waves should be considered to improve the detection accuracy of target altitudes for long-range surveillance radars, however, it is difficult to estimate accurate refractivity of atmosphere for every location. In this paper, we propose the atmosphere evaluation metric(AEM) to estimate atmospheric conditions at target locations using target altitudes obtained from primary surveillance radar(PSR) and secondary surveillance radar(SSR). To verify the suitability of the proposed metric, we observed atmospheric conditions and calculated estimation errors of target altitudes using measured data.

The aim of this study was to develop a model that could be used in the design of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for peaches. Respiratory data at 5, 10, $20^{\circ}C$ for peaches were gathered and altered for create useful respiration model. Packaging materials were conventional low density polyethylene and polypropylene with anti-fog, and anti-fungi treatments, and thickness was $30{\mu}m$ and $50{\mu}m$ each. Permeability tests were performed to find their oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor transmission rate as increases in temperature. Test results were then converted to logarithm format for MAP modeling. The maximum rate of oxygen uptake increased with increasing temperature. Optimum gas composition in the package system for fruits were set according to literature and upper or lower limits of oxygen and dioxide established. To predict gas composition at certain storage time, weight of fruits, film thickness, film type, and other variables, respiration rate was studied at various storage conditions. The results of tests were used to calculate Cameron's model and converted to a cubic estimation equation. The validity of the model was tested experimentally by observing actual atmospheric changes inside packages. This result of study may be useful for designing dynamic gas exchange MAP systems for similar agricultural products.
