Flow prediction was carried out through observational survey and three dimensional multi-layered numerical diagnostic model experiment to clarify the time and spatial structure of tidal current and residual flow dominant in the sea exchange and material circulation of the waters around Geumo Islands in the southern waters of Korea. The horizontal variation of tidal current is so large that it causes asymmetric tidal mixing due to horizontal eddies and the topographical effect creating convergence and dispersion of flow direction and velocity. Due to strong tidal currents flowing northwest-southeast, counterclockwise and clockwise eddies are formed on the left and right sides of the south of Sori Island. These topographical eddies are created by horizontal turbulence and bottom friction causing nonlinear effects. Baroclinic density flows are less than 5 cm/s at coastal area in summer and the entire sea area in winter. The wind driven currents assuming summer and winter seasonal winds are also less than 5 cm/s and the current flow rate is high in winter. Density current in summer and wind driven current in winter have a relatively greater effect on the net residual flows (tidal residual current + density current + density driven current) around Geumo Islands Sea area.
Current season's shoots on 2-year-old branches of 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold' apple trees were heading back pruned to 5 leaves from early May to mid July at about 12-day intervals. The summer heading back pruning induced regrowth on the pruned shoots with different responses between the two cultivars. Generally, greater regrowth occurred on the pruned shoots of 'Fuji' trees than on those of 'Jonagold', irrespective of the time of the heading cut. The shoots of 'Fuji' trees pruned in late May or in June exhibited greater regrowth compared with those pruned in early May or in July, whereas the summer heading back pruning in June resulted in the greatest regrowth for 'Jonagold'. The heading cut induced terminal flower bud formation on the pruned shoots, the percentage of which was higher in 'Fuji' than in 'Jonagold'. The highest percentages of terminal flower bud formation for 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold' were obtained with the heading cut in late May and in mid June, respectively. Percent flowering of the buds was similar in both cultivars, but percent fruit set was slightly higher in 'Fuji' than in 'Jonagold'. The time of the heading cut did not affect percent fruit set in both cultivars. Our results demonstrate that summer heading back pruning of current season's shoots induces regrowth and terminal flower bud formation therefrom when done at appropriate time, but the specific responses to the heading cut are cultivardependent.

The stone Buddha and Shrine of Unjusa temple (Korean Treasure No. 797) at Hwasun formed in Koryo Dynasty is unique style which faces each other the back parts of south and north within the stone Shrine. The stone Buddha and Shrine is highly evaluated in historical, artistic and academic respects. But, the stone properties have been exposed in the open system various aspects of degradations weathered for a long time without specific protective facilities. To inquire into relative deterioration and environmental factor, air temperature and relative humidity of the stone Buddha and Shrine were monitored for a year of the indoor and outdoor, respectively. As a result, the temperature shows increase and decrease according to the seasons in the tendency to clear. While the relative humidity is high to keep all four seasons. Highly relative humidity environment induces dew condensation on the interior of stone Buddha and Shrine. The dew condensation is recorded at the spring, summer and winter season. The summer season is double the total of spring and winter season. In the case of summer, dew condensation is long time continued due to high temperature and relative humidity that is kept by more than nearly 100%. There is progress towards chemical weathering throughout dissolve rock properties and alteration on the rock surface. In the case of winter, dew condensation is not kept for a long time as summer. In the winter, which showing a below zero may add physical weathering throughout moisture that happen by dew condensation to repeat freezing and thawing. Therefore, the reduction plan of the relative humidity effect on dew condensation should be prepared.

The estimation of material cycle of pollutants is necessary for the environment management in coastal zone. Model for material budgets are useful tools to understand the phenomena of natural system and to provide an insight into the complex processes including physical, chemical and biological processes occuring in natural system. Budgets of fresh water, salt and nutrients were estimated in order to clarify the characteristics of seasonal material cycle in Keum river estuary. Inflow volumes of freshwater into system was approximately 1.014×10/sup 8/~12.565×10/sup 8/m³/month and discharge in Keum river has occupied 99.7% of total freshwater. Seasonal variations of freshwater volume in the system were found to be very high in the range of about 4 ~ 14 times due to rainfall in summer season. Existing water mass of freshwater in system calculated by salt budget was approximately 0.339×10/sup 8/~0.652×10/sup 8/m³. Mean residence time of freshwater was calculated to be about 1.6~10.0day, and exchange time was calculated to be about 2.2~11.9day. Mean residence time was short as 1.6day in summer due to precipitation, and long as 10.1day in winter due to a drought. Inflow masses of DIP and DIN were approximately 5.57~32.68ton/month and 234.93~2,373.39ton/month, respectively. Seasonal inflow mass of DIP was larger than the outflow mass except for summer season. Thus, we postulate that accumulation of DIP in the system will happen. Residence times of DIP and DIN were calculated to be 1.1~6.4day and 1.8~10.9day, respectively. The ratio of water residence time versus DIP, DIN residence time was calculated to be 0.39~2.31 times and 0.83~1.13 times, respectively.
Intraseasonal variability of the tropical convection over the Indian/western Pacific is studied using the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite high cloud amount. This study is directed to find the tropical-extratropical interaction in the frequency range of intraseasonal and interannual variabilities of the summer monsoon occured over the domain of 90E-171W and 495-50N. Especially, in order to investigate the intraseasonal interaction of last Asia summer monsoon associated with the tropical convections in the high cloud amounts, the spatial and time structure of the intraseasonal oscillation for the movement-and the evolution of the large-scale connections are studied. To describe the spatial and the time evolution, the extended empirical orthogonal function analysis is applied. The first mode may be considered to a normal structure, indicating that the strong convection band over 90E-120E is extended to sastward but this mode was detected as the intraseasonal variability during summer monsoon. It is found that the dominant intraseasonal mode of the tropical convection consists of the spatial changes over a broad period range centered around 40~50days.

The background level and timely variation characteristics of atmospheric $^{222}Rn$ concentrations have been evaluated by the real time monitoring at Gosan site of Jeju Island, Korea, during 2008~2015. The average concentration of atmospheric radon was $2,480mBq\;m^{-3}$ for the study period. The cyclic seasonality of radon was characterized such as winter maximum and summer minimum, consistent with the reduction in terrestrial fetch going to summer. On monthly variations of radon, the mean concentration in October was the highest as $3,041mBq\;m^{-3}$, almost twice as that in July ($1,481mBq\;m^{-3}$). The diurnal radon concentrations increased throughout the nighttime approaching to the maximum ($2,819mBq\;m^{-3}$) at around 7 a.m., and then gradually decreased throughout the daytime by the minimum ($2,069mBq\;m^{-3}$) at around 3 p.m. The diurnal radon cycle in winter showed comparatively small amplitude due to little variability in atmospheric mixing depth, conversely, large amplitude was observed in summer due to relatively a big change in atmospheric mixing depth. The cluster back-trajectories of air masses showed that the high radon events occurred by the predominant continental fetch over through Asia continent, and the radon concentrations from China continent were about 1.9 times higher on the whole than those from the North Pacific Ocean. The concentrations of $PM_{10}$ also increased in proportion to the high radon concentrations, showing a good linear correlation between $PM_{10}$ and radon concentrations.
Growth and flowering of Cymbidium 'Red Fire' and 'Yokihi' plants were examined in a greenhouse with cooling systems in summer, and with night interruption (NI) lighting in winter as a forcing culture system. The greenhouse was divided into two sections with separate cooling controls during the summer season. One section was cooled by a mist system (mist), while the other section was cooled by a shade screen (shade). During the winter, the greenhouse was redivided into three sections within each cooling system. Plants were grown with NI either at a low light intensity of $3-7{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(LNI) or a high l ight intensity of $120{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(HNI) u sing h igh-pressure sodium l amps during the 22:00-02:00 HR. The control plants were grown under 9 h short-day condition. NI for 16 weeks and cooling for 9 weeks were employed twice during the 2 years of the experimental period. The air temperature was approximately $2^{\circ}C$ lower in the mist than in the shade and the relative humidity was 80 ${\pm}5%$ in the mist compared to $55{\pm}5%$ in the shade. The daily light integral in the mist section was 48% higher than in the shade section. The time from initial planting to flowering pseudobulb emergence decreased with both LNI and HNI for both cultivars, regardless of the cooling treatments. Under NI conditions, however, between 60% and 1 00% of plants of both cultivars flowered in the mist, whereas no or 20% of 'Red Fire' or 'Yokihi' plants, respectively, flowered in the shade treatment over 2 years. Plants grown under the mist had bigger pseudobulbs than those grown in the shade under both NI treatments. These results show that commercial use of NI in winter and a mist cooling system in summer would decrease crop production time to 2 years and increase profits in Cymbidium forcing culture.
Hydrography of the Korea Strait was influenced by the various water masses such as Korean coastal water, East Sea cold water, and Tsushima Current. Anchovy larvae were frequently found in the area influenced by the Tsushima Current. Anchovy appeared in all seasons and were most abundant in summer. Anchovy was more abundant in the middle layer(30~70m) than the surface layer in spring and summer and was little in the deeper layer beyond the depth of 100m. It was most abundant in the surface layer in autumn, and decreased toward the deeper layer. They were more abundant in the middle layer(30~50m) than in the surface layer and the bottom layer in winter. Anchovy was most abundant in the depth of 30m to 70m during the day time, however it was more abundant in the surface layer during the night time. Although vertical distribution patterns of abundance varied seasonally and diurnally, most of the larval anchovy distributed in the upper layer within the depth of 100m and in the upper layer above the thermocline in summer and autumn.
The number of school lunch-supported children who belong to low-income families has been rapidly increased in Korea. This study was aimed at evaluation of nutritional status of school lunch-supported elementary school children. One hundred school lunch-supported children and 119 non-supported children of fourth to sixth year class in 3 elementary schools in Gyeongbuk rural area were selected, and surveys were conducted twice, i.e., once during school term and once during summer vacation in 2006. Food consumption survey during school term was carried out through an interview by dieticians at school-lunch time using a 24-hour recall method, and the survey during summer vacation conducted by recording food intakes for three days by children. Nutrient intakes were calculated using CAN-Pro 3.0 program. School lunch-supported children showed higher rate of skipping breakfast and rather irregular meal time as compared to non-supported students. Eating alone was more frequent in school lunch-supported children than in nonsupported children. The average nutrient intakes and nutrient adequacy ratios were lower in supported children than in non-supported children. During term, percentages of nutrient intakes provided by school-lunch were higher in supported children than in non-supported children. Intakes of energy nutrients were within acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges, but proportion of carbohydrate intake increased during vacation. Analysis of patterns of food intakes based on major food groups (dairy, meat, grain, fruit, vegetable) indicated that meals during term were more balanced as compared to meals during vacation. In conclusion, food behaviors and nutrient intakes of school lunchsupported children were inferior to those of non-supported children during term and during summer vacation. They were provided with more nutrient intakes from school lunch during term as compared to non-supported children. Therefore, it is necessary not only to keep meal support program during vacation but also to provide a proper nutrition education as a part of school lunch program to improve nutritional status and food behaviors of school lunch-supported children.

The African swine fever virus (ASFV) remains contagious for a long time, not only in the carcass, but also in the bone marrow of an infected animal. The scavenging activity of various animals on ASFV-infected carcasses is a likely risk factor for ASFV transmission. Thus, we conducted this study to determine whether scavengers are potential vectors for ASFV. In nonprotected wild boar carcasses on the forest floor, we investigated the seasonal patterns of carcass decomposition and scavenger visits for feeding on them. The duration from fresh to early skeletonization (only bones and leather remaining) of adult carcasses was 37.6±23.1 days (n=3, range=11-51 days) in winter. The duration from fresh to later skeletonization (only bones and some fur remaining) of all carcasses, including subadult carcasses, was 8.3±2.5 days (n=4, range=7-12 days) in summer. At all three study sites, leopard cats (30.3%), large-billed crows (21.6%), and golden eagles (18.1%) were the frequently visiting species, representing more than 10% of the total visits (343 visits) in winter, whereas raccoons (21.9%), grey-backed thrushes (39.4%), and eyebrowed thrushes (14.7%) were the most frequent visitors in summer. In winter, crows or cinereous vultures were the first animals to arrive at a carcass; in summer, raccoons or crows arrived first. Our results showed that wild boars, raccoons, and leopard cats relatively frequently visited wild boar carcasses and stayed there for a long time. Wild rodents chewing on or staying near carcasses were photographed during winter. In addition to wild boars, thus, mammals, such as raccoons, leopard cats and rodents, and birds, such as accipitrids and thrushes, may be spreaders of ASFV in South Korea.
