  • This study was performed to observe the recent infection status of Sesarma dehaani with the metacercariae of p. itoktsuenensis in the well-known cnzootic focus, Sumjin river delta. A total of 74 Sesarma dehaani were collected from a focus near the mouth of the Sumjin river in November, 1986 and February, 1987. The crabs were examined for P. iloktsuenensis metacercariae by the method of Seo and Kwak(1972). The metacercariae of p. iloktsuenensis were found in the liver of the crabs. Among the 74 crabs examined, 47(63.5%) were found infected with 1∼102 metacercariae(18.2 per crab). The infection rate and metacercarial density increased as the sixte of the crab was increased. From the results, it is suggested that the life cycle of p. ilokssuenensis is actively maintained in the Sumjin river basin.

  • The distribution of organic nitrogen and its decomposition rate were studied in the Youngsan River and the Sumjin River system in Korea. Samples were conducted seasonally in June, August, December of 2006, and February of 2007. Collected samples were incubated for 20 days in a dark chamber ($20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) and analyzed the changes of nitrogen form (particulate organic nitrogen, dissolved organic nitrogen, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate). The mean total nitrogen (TN) concentration in the Youngsan River and the Sumjin River were $2.62mgN{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $1.53mgN{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively. TN comprised of 65% DIN and 35% ON. The decomposition coefficients of organic nitrogen were also determined by two different fitting models. The decomposition rates of nitrogen species (TON, LPON, LDON, ${NH_4}^+$ and ${NO_2}^-$) ranged from 0.024 to $1.043day^{-1}$ in the Youngsan River and 0.008 to $0.693day^{-1}$ in the Sumjin River, respectively. The result of this study can give a guide to the selection of parameters in the calibration processes of water quality models.

  • The variability in the phosphorus concentrations and the decomposition rates of organic phosphorus were measured in two rivers, the Youngsan River and the Sumjin River through four surveys in June, August and December of 2006 and February of 2007. Water samples were incubated for 20 days in a dark incubator and the change of forms of phosphorus (POP, DOP, DIP) were analyzed. By fitting the change to four types of models the decomposition rates of organic phosphorus were determined. The mean total organic phosphorus (TOP) decomposition rate coefficients in the Youngsan River and the Sumjin River were $0.036day^{-1}$ and $0.035day^{-1}$, respectively. In POP$\rightarrow$DIP model, the average decomposition rate coefficients in the Youngsan River and the Sumjin River were 0.049 and $0.035day^{-1}$, respectively. The average POP decomposition rate coefficients of POP$\rightarrow$DOP$\rightarrow$DIP model were $0.042day^{-1}$ and $0.038day^{-1}$ in the Youngsan River and Sumjin River respectively while the mean DOP decomposition rate coefficients were $0.255day^{-1}$ and $0.244day^{-1}$, respectively. In the Youngsan River, the mean POP$\rightarrow$DOP decomposition rate coefficient and POP$\rightarrow$DIP decomposition rate coefficient of POP$\rightarrow$DOP$\rightarrow$DIP, POP$\rightarrow$DIP model were $0.039day^{-1}$ and $0.007day^{-1}$, respectively. And in the Sumjin River, the above decomposition rate coefficients were $0.031day^{-1}$ and $0.004day^{-1}$, respectively. The decomposition rate coefficients measured in this study might be applicable for modeling of river water quality.

  • The Yocheon is an upper stream of Sumjin river, passing through Namwon city. The water temperature of the stream increases from upper stream to downstream. The amount of COD, T-P, T-N, EC, TDS abruptly increases at measuring site 8. Whereas, the pH and DO level abruptly decreases at this site. At this point, the Yocheon river joins another small stream passing through the central part of Namwon city. At a further downstream pass site 8, the amount of COD on April and June (a dry season) is on third grade of water quality for lacustrine. This contamination suggests that sewage from the Namwon city provide COD, T-N, T-P into the stream. At point 2, the high amount of T-N indicates that the upper stream is contaminated by agricultural activity.

  • Three morphological types of the genus Metagonimus were found encysted in the dace, Tribolodon tacganowskii, caught from the Sumjin River, Korea. They include Metagonimus Yokogawa type (M. yokogawai) , Miyata type, and Koga type according to Saito's classification. The metacercariae were experimentally fed to rats and hamsters and a total of 1,624 Metagonimus worms were recovered from their small intestine. The number of each type was 820 for Yokogawa type, 688 for Miyata type, 46 for Koga type, and 70 undetermined. The major differential keys between Yokogawa and Miyata types were in the position of two testes, distribution of uterine tubules, and size of the eggs, and the keys between Miyata and Koga types were in the position of two testes, distribution of vitelline follicles, and size of the eggs. The validity of Miyata type as a specific level should be retained until more convincing evidences are obtained. Koga type is regarded as a synonym of M. takahashii. The present results reveal that there are 3 morphological types of Metagonimus whose larvae are encysted in the dace, T. tacganowskii, from the Sumjin River. Key words: Metagcnimus yokogawai, morphological types, rats, hamsters, dace ( Tribolodon tacxanowskii) , Sumjin Rver.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between physical stream characteristics and bed materials in natural rivers. Accordingly, four natural rivers were selected reference streams, they were Nam river, Sumjin River, Naesung River and Han River. Grain size distributions of bed materials were gravels, cobbles and boulders in Han river and Nam river, were sand, gravels, cobbles and boulders in Sumjin river and were sand in Naesung river. Four reference streams were divided into each two reference reaches (straight and bend) by plan and profile characteristics of naturally meandering stream. Therefore various reference reaches were chosen in the aspect of physical stream characteristics and grain size distributions. The results investigated and analyzed are as follows. The streams that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were coarse were stable because they had variety of bed slope without sediment deposition, and then the riffles frequency and the physical characteristics were various. Also, velocitydepth regime were various in four kinds, and the response parts for water level change were small, so that channel flow status were stable and excellent condition. On the other hand, sand river that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were fine had not the variety of parameters as velocity-depth regimes, sediment deposition, channel flow status and riffles frequency, so that the physical stream characteristics were not various.
