  • We consider the problem of determining the circle of best fit to a set of data points in the plane. In [1] and [2] several algorithms already have been given for fitting a circle in least squares sense of minimizing the geometric distances to the given data points. In this paper we present another new descent algorithm which computes a parametric represented circle in order to minimize the sum of the squares of the distances to the given points. For any choice of starting values our algorithm has the advantage of ensuring convergence to a local minimum. Numerical examples are given.

  • In 1911, Dubouis determined all positive integers represented by sums of k nonvanishing squares for all k ≥ 4. As a generalization, Y.-S. Ji, M.-H. Kim and B.-K. Oh determined all positive definite binary quadratic forms represented by sums of k nonvanishing squares for all k ≥ 5. In this article, we give a simple proof for Ji-Kim-Oh's theorem for all k ≥ 10.

  • The dynamic behaviour of a four-span continuous girder railway bridge subjected to multiple support excitations is investigated using the response spectrum method. Small-amplitude oscillations and linear-elastic material behaviour are assumed. Soil-structure interaction effects are disregarded and only the out-of-plane response of the bridge is considered. The results of the response spectrum analysis are compared with those from a time history analysis. Different combination rules for the superposition of modal maxima as well as supports are employed, such as square-root-of-sum-squares, double sum and p-norm methods.

  • In this paper we present the simple updating formulas for a sum of product and a sum of cross product when a new value is added on or a specific value is eliminated from the original data. The sample variance and correlation for the new data set are derived by new computing formulas. Any statistic which is a function of the sum of product and a sum of cross product also can be updated by proposed method even though the original data is not available.

  • Fitting the projected wire-frame model to the detected edge pixels on images by using least-squares approach, called Least-squares Model-image Fitting (LSMIF), is the key of the Model-based Building Extraction (MBBE). It is implemented by iteratively adjusting the model parameters to minimize the squares sum of distances from the extracted edge pixels to the projected wire-frame. This paper describes a series of experiments and studies on various factors affect the fitting results, including the edge detectors, the weighting rules, the initial value of parameters, and the number of overlapped images. The experimental result is not only helpful to clarify the influences of each factor, but is also able to enhance the robustness of the LSMIF algorithm.

  • In this study we generalize the law of cosine(in any triangle the square of one side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other sides minus twice their product times the cosine of their included angle), We find the following generalized law of cosine: in any polygon the square of one side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other sides minus twice their products times the cosines of their included angles, and prove it using vector.

  • This paper proposes a sum of squares (SOS) method for anti-swing control of overhead crane system using HOSM (High-Order Sliding-Mode) observer. By representing the dynamic equations of overhead crane as the polynomial dynamic equations via Taylor series expansion, the control input is obtained from the converted polynomial dynamic equations by numerical tool SOSTOOL. Since the actual crane systems include disturbance such as wind and friction, we propose a method to compensate for the disturbance by estimating the disturbance using HOSM observer. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness and the applicability of the proposed method.

  • In regression diagnostics, a number of joint influence measures based on various statistical tools have been discussed. We consider an alternate representation in terms of the predicted residual and g-leverage determined by the remaining points. By this approach, we choose the predicted residual sum of squares for the keypoints as joint influence measure and propose a new expression of it so that we can extend the single case form to the multiple case one. Furthermore we suggest a seach method for joint influence after investigating some properties of the new expression.

  • For the detection on variance changes in the nonstationary time series with a unit root two types of test statistics are proposed, of which one is based on the cumulative sum of squares and the other is based on the likelihood ratio test. The properties of the cusum type test statistic are derived and the performance of two tests in small samples are compared through Monte Carlo study. It is ovserved that the test based on the cumulative sum of squares can detect a samll change in the variance faster than the one based on the likelihood ratio.
