  • A set of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation for the gas inside a spherical bubble with heat transfer through the bubble wall permits to predict correctly behavior of an ultrasonically driven bubble in aqueous solutions of sulfuric acid. Calculation results of the minimum velocity of bubble wall and the peak temperature and pressure are in excellent agreement with the observed ones. Further the calculated bubble radius-time curve displays alternating pattern of bubble motion as observed in experiment.

  • Various kinds of corrosion prevention methods have been developed. It is known that the method of electrochemical protection is more effective and economical than any other method on the large scale metal structures in corrosive solutions. Strong acid solutions such as nitric and sulfuric acid solutions are often used in industries, and the expensive stainless steel is almost exclusively used for the equipment that comes in contact with such acid solutions. However, it is more reasonable that carbon steel is used rather than stainless steel depending upon concentration of those acid solutions from the economical viewpoint. In this study, the typical strong acid solution such as nitric and sulfuric acid solutions are chosen for the experiment and the selected materials of specimen are the stainless steels of SUS 304L and SUS 316L, the carbon steels of SS 41, SM 50 and RA 32, and highly pure lead. Electrochemical protection diagrams can be drawn with data from the external cathodic and anodic polarization curves of SUS 304L, SUS 316L and SM 50 steels in 5-60% nitric acid solutions and from those polarization curves of SS 41, RA 32, SM 50 and SUS 316L steels, and highly pure lead in 2.5-98% sulfuric acid solutions at the slow scanning rate. The data obtained with using the determination method of the optimum cathodic protection potential, the Tafel extrapolation method and the characteristics of anodic polarization curves. The main results obtained from the diagrams are as follows: 1) In nitric acid solution : (1) Corrosion potentials exist in each of those corrosion zones on the stainless steels in the lower concentration than about 12% solutions and on the high tensile strength steels in the lower concentration than about 30% solutions, but the corrosion current (density) in each zone is small on the above mentioned former steels and large on the latter ones. (2) The stainless steels can be self-passivated in the higher concentration than 15% solutions, and the high tensile strength steels gives rise to the same phenomenon in the higher concentration than 35% solutions. (3) The stainless steels in the lower concentration than 60% solutions and the high tensile strength steels in the higher concentration than 35% solutions can be used without protection, but the latter steels must ve protected anodically in the lower conccentration than about 30% solutions. 2) In sufuric acid solution : (1) The carbon steels can be self-passivated in the higher concentration than 45% solutions, and the SUS 316L steel in higher concentration than 75% solutions and the lead in all concentration solutions also gives rise to the same phenomenon. (2) The lead in the lower concentration than 80% solutions and the SUS 316L steel in the higher concentration than 80% solutions can be used without protection. (3) The carbon steels in the higher concentration than 50% solutions also can be used without protecting economically, but the SUS 316L steel in the 20-70% solutions are considerably corrosive without protecting anodically.

  • Anodizing of Al6061 alloy was conducted in two different electrolytes of 20% sulfuric acid and 8% sulfuric acid + 3 % oxalic acid solutions at a constant current or decreasing current density conditions, and its dielectric breakdown voltage was measured. The surface morphology of anodic oxide films was observed by TEM and thermal treatment was carried out at 400 ℃ for 2 h to evaluate the resistance of the anodic oxide films to crack initiation. The anodic oxide film formed in 8% sulfuric acid + 3 % oxalic acid solution showed higher dielectric breakdown voltage and better resistance to crack initiation at 400 ℃ than that formed in 20% sulfuric acid solution. The dielectric breakdown voltage increased 6 ~12% by applying decreasing current density comparing with a constant current density.

  • Separation of Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) from sulfuric acid solutions was investigated by extraction with several acidic extractants such as Versatic acid, LIX 63, and Cyanex 301. From strong sulfuric acid solutions, the separation of Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) by Versatic acid and LIX 63 was not possible, while selective extraction of Hf(IV) over Zr(IV) was obtained with Cyanex 301. However, the extraction percentage of the two metals was much lower compared to that by D2EHPA. Mixing of TBP with Cyanex 301 and D2EHPA led to negative effect on the extraction and separation of the two metal ions. The difference in the extraction reaction and separation selectivity between HCl, $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$ media with each extractant was discussed.

  • The pneumatic classification and acidic leaching behaviors of phosphor sludge have been examined to establish the recycling system of rare earth components contained in waste fluorescent lamp. At first, separation characteristic of rare earth components and calcium phosphate in phosphor sludge was investigated by pneumatic classification. After pneumatic classification of phosphor sludge, rare earth components were leached in various acidic solutions and sodium hydroxide solution. For recovery of soluble component in leaching solution, rare earth components were separated as hydroxide and oxalate precipitations. The experimental results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) In classification process, rare earth components in phosphor sludge were concentrated to 29.3% from 13.3%, and its yield was 32.9%. (2) In leaching process, sulfuric acid solution was more effective one as a leaching solvent of rare earth component than other solutions. Y and Eu components in phosphor sludge were dissolved in sulfuric acid solution of 1.5 k㏖/㎥, and other rare earth components were rarely dissolved in leaching solution. Leaching degrees of Y and Eu were respectively 92% and 98% in the following optimum leaching conditions; sulfuric acid concentration is 1.5 k㏖/㎥ , leaching temperature 343 K, leaching time 3.6 ks and pulp concentration 30 kg/㎥. (3) Y and Eu components of phosphor sludge contained in waste fluorescent lamp were, effectively recovered by three processes of pneumatic classification, sulfuric acid leaching and oxalate precipitation methods. Their recovery was finally about 65 %, and its purity was 98.2%.

  • This work studies dielectric breakdown behavior of AAO (anodic aluminum oxide) films formed on pure aluminum at a constant current density in 5 ~ 20 vol.% sulfuric acid (SA) and 2 ~ 8 wt.% oxalic acid (OA) solutions. It was observed that dielectric breakdown voltage of AAO film with the same thickness increased with increasing concentration of both SA and OA solutions up to 15 vol.% and 6 wt.%, respectively, above which it decreased slightly. The dielectric breakdown resistance of the OA films appeared to be superior to that of SA films. After dielectric breakdown test, cracks and a hole were observed. The crack length increased with increasing SA film thickness but it did not increase with increasing OA film thickness. To explain the reason why shorter cracks formed on the OA films than the SA films after dielectric breakdown test, the generation of tensile stresses at the oxide/metal interface was discussed in relation to porosity of AAO films obtained from cross-sectional morphologies.

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will administer a new 0.5% global sulfur cap on fuel content from 1 January 2020, lowering from the present 3.5% limit. Seawater $SO_x$ (sulfur oxide) scrubbing is especially spray scrubbing and a promising alternative to complying with the IMO regulation. However, the ionization of $SO_2$ (sulfur dioxide) and the $H_2SO_4$ (sulfuric acid) formed from $SO_3$ (sulfur trioxide) is proposed to accelerate corrosion of the internal seawater pipe. Apparently, the corrosion of the scrubber seawater piping system occurs in a severe and frequent manner. Hence, in this study, electrochemical measurement and weight loss of carbon steel (used as seawater pipe in most of the ships) in diluted sulfuric acid solution were investigated to determine corrosion rate, corrosion current density, corrosion potential, electrochemical behavior, and impressed-current density. Accordingly, the corrosion rate of carbon steel sheet in various diluted sulfuric acid solutions was observed to be greater than that in natural seawater, thus suggesting the fundamental data to deal with corrosion problems in scrubber seawater pipe.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the bracket shear bond strengths of the crystal growth solutions with those of the $37\%$ phosphric acid etch technique. The 4 crystal growth solutions were made experimentally in the lab, that is, (1) $30\%$ polyacrylic acid solution containing 0.3 M sulfuric acid (ES 1), (2) $30\%$ polyacrylic acid solution containing 0.6M sulfuric acid (ES 2), (3) $30\%$ polyacrylic acid solution containing 0.3 M sulfuric acid and 0.6 M lithium sulfate(ES 3), and (4) $30\%$ polyacrlic acid solution containing 0.3 M sulfuric acid and $5\%$ phosphoric acid(ES4). The $37\%$ phosphoric acid solution used as a control. Bovine lower incisor tooth enamel was treated by the above solutions for 60 sec, washed out for 20 sec with slow water stream, and bonded lower anterior edgewise bracket with the light curing orthodontic composite resin adhesives. The teeth bonded brackets were stored in the distilled water at room temperature for 24 h, and followed to test the bracket shear bond strength. The acid etch technque showed 177.6 kg/$cm^2$ of mean shear bond strength which was the highest among the enamel treatment solutions. ES 1 shown 58.4 kg/$cm^2$ of mean shear bond strength and that of ES 4 showed 66.5 kg/$cm^2$. There was no significant difference between the two(p>0.05). ES2 showed 110.6kg/$cm^2$ of mean shear bond strength which was $62.3\%$ of that of acid etch technique. ES 3 showed 131.1 kg/$cm^2$ of mean shear bond strength which was the highest among experimental crystal growth solutions and which was $74\%$ of that of acid etch technique. The shear bond strengths of the crystal growth solutions were significantly lower that that of acid etch technique(p<0.05). The results sugest that although bracket shear bond strength of $30\%$ polyacrylic acid solution containing 0.3M sulfuric acid and 0.6 M lithium sulfate were showed the highest, it is low for the clinical application of this solution.

  • The corrosion resistance of several kind of ME (Metal Evaporated) tape has been investigated both in mild sulfuric acid solution and NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the degradation of ME tapes was accelerated with increasing the concentration of sulfuric acid. There was no significant change in corrosion resistance when the concentration of NaCl was under 3.5 wt%. However, the impedance value decreased when the concentration of NaCl was up to 10 wt%. The degradation of backside of ME tapes was also investigated by AC impedance measurements. The results showed that the impedance behavior of backside plastic film changed with the concentration of sulfuric acid even at the beginning of immersion, implying the changing of the permeability for the backside of ME tapes. It was also found that the corrosion resistance of DVC (Digital Video Cassette) ME tape was better that that of Hi-8mm ME tapes in sulfuric acid solutions. Also, the backside of DVC ME tape showed better water resistance than that of Hi8 ME tapes.

  • In NaCl solutions acidified with $H_2SO_4$, Fe20Cr1.1N alloy showed enhanced pitting corrosion resistance than Fe20Cr alloy. An XPS analysis revealed that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy contained higher cationfraction of Cr than that of Fe20Cr alloy, and nitrogen was incorporated into the film. In addition, it was found that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy was thinner and had higher oxygen vacancy density than that of Fe20Cr alloy. Based on these observations, it was concluded that the chemical composition was the determining factor for the protectiveness of the passive film of Fe20Cr based alloy in dilute $H_2SO_4$ solution.
