  • Dry deposition fluxes for $SO_2$, particulate sulfate, nitrate, ammonium and $HNO_3$ were estimated in urban area for the time period January$\sim$ October 2005. Fluxes were generated using atmospheric concentration data collected both in Acid Deposition and Air Quality Monitoring Networks, and deposition velocities computed by combining land-use data with meteorological information. The resulting annually averaged $SO_2$, $NO_3$, and aerosol deposition velocities were found to be 0.4 cm/s, 4.3 cm/s and 0.1 cm/s, respectively, and thus deposition rates were 4.4 mg/$m^2$. day for $SO_2$, and 5.4 mg/$m^2$ . day for $NHO_3$, and particulate sulfate, ammonium and nitrate recorded 1.0 mg/$m^2$ . day, 0.4 mg/$m^2$ . day and 0.4 mg/$m^2$ day, respectively. Maximum for in seasonal variation of monthly averaged deposition velocities occurred in summer in contrast to $HNO_3$ showing peak in spring. There was no significant variation for aerosol. The dry to total (wet and dry) deposition contributed about 40% for sulfur and 28% for nitrogen species in this study.

  • Lithium batteries based on elemental sulfur as the cathode-active material capture great attraction due to the high theoretical capacity, easy availability, low cost and non-toxicity of sulfur. Although lithium/sulfur (Li/S) primary cells were known much earlier, the interest in developing Li/S secondary batteries that can deliver high energy and high power was actively pursued since early 1990’s. A lot of technical challenges including the low conductivity of sulfur, dissolution of sulfur-reduction products in the electrolyte leading to their migration away from the cathode, and deposition of solid reaction products on cathode matrix had to be tackled to realize a high and stable performance from rechargeable Li/S cells. This article presents briefly an overview of the studies pertaining to the different aspects of Li/S batteries including those that deal with the sulfur electrode, electrolytes, lithium anode and configuration of the batteries.

  • In this study, seasonal variations of the dry deposition velocity and deposition flux for the sulfur dioxide were analysed. The field observation was performed during one year (from November 1, 1995 to October 31, 1996) in Chunchon basin. The turbulence data were measured by 3-dimensional sonic anemometer/thermometer, and were estimated by mean meteorological data obtained at two heights (2.5 m and 10 m) of meteorological tower. Also, the estimation methods were evaluated by comparing the turbulence data. The results showed that the estimated dry deposition velocity and turbulence parameter such as uc and sensible heat flux using mean meteorological data were relatively similar to the sonic measurements, but all showed somewhat large differences. The dry deposition velocity was large in summer and small in winter mainly due to canopy resistance (rc). The major factor which affects diurnal variation of the velocity was aerodynamic resistance (rw). The SO2 dry deposition flux was large in winter and small in summer in Chunchon.

  • An acid deposition Engineering Model was developed by parameterizing the role of organics in the photochemistry and by simplifying liquid phase processes. This Engineering Model concept was implemented onto the Sulfur Transport Eulerian Model II(STEM II). The Engineering Model version of the STEM(STEM-ENG) saves the CPU time over 50 times and produces the upper and lower limit values prodicted by the original STEM II. These limits obtained by the STEM-ENG can be used to estimate the importance of organics in acid and O3 production. The STEM-ENG with 30,000 grid points can be run on any recent PCs to give a quick assessment of air quality.

  • Carbon coils could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ as source gases under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. By the incorporation of $SF_6$ additive in cyclic modulation manner, the dominant formation of the nanosized carbon coils could be achieved with maintaining the minimized sulfur additive amount. The geometry variation of the as-grown carbon coils, such as linear type, microsized coil type, wavelike nanosized coil type, and nanosized coil type, were investigated according to the different cyclic modulation manner of $SF_6$ flow. $SF_6$ gas incorporation develops the coil-type geometry. Furthermore, the higher flow rate of $SF_6$ gas increased the amount of the nanosized carbon coils. The slightly increased etching ability by $SF_6$ addition seems to be the cause for these results.

  • Diesel autothermal reforming(ATR) is an effective method for hydrogen production. But, diesel ATR has several problems such as the sulfur poisoning of catalyst and carbon deposition during reforming reactor. Especially, carbon deposition is a severe problem, which causes rapid performance degradation, in the reforming reaction. Ethylene among the reformate gas is a carbon precursor. Effective decomposition of ethylene is an important issue. In this paper, we investigated the carbon deposition from ethylene in the reforming reaction for proper reaction condition of diesel ATR. We achieved relatively high performance of diesel ATR under $H_{2}O/C=0.8$, $O_{2}/C=3$ condition that was based on the experiment of ethylene reforming reaction.

  • Diesel autothermal reforming has several problems such as carbon deposition in reforming reactor, sulfur poisoning of catalyst, difficulty of aromatics decomposition and mixing problems of reactants(diesel, steam, oxygen). Severe carbon deposition causes the rapid performance degradation of reformer. Carbon deposition is formed from ethylene, carbon precursor. Ethylene was generated at the homogeneous reaction zone of the reactor entrance. This phenomenon is closely linked to the mixing of reactants. In this investigation, we try to minimize the ethylene generation at the reactor entrance atomization technique.

  • In this paper, CdS thin films, which were widely used as a window layer of the CdS/CdTe and the $CdS/CuInSe_2$heterojunction solar cell, were grown by chemical bath deposition, and the structural, optical and electrical properties of the films on reaction temperatures were investigated. Cadmium acetate and thiourea were used as cadmium and sulfur source, respectively. And Ammonium acetate was used as the buffer solution. As the reaction temperatures were increased, the deposition rate of CdS fllms prepared by CBD was increased and the grain size was large due to increasing reaction rate in solution, also optical transmittance of the films in visible lights was increased on rising reaction temperatures.

  • Electrum-sulfide minerals of the Namsan Au-Ag mine were deposited in two stages of quartz and calcite veins that fill fault planes in Mesozoic granitic rocks (230~155 Ma). The K/Ar radiometric dating of hydrothermal sericite indicates that mineralization is early Cretaceous age ($127{\pm}3.0Ma$). Mineralogic, fluid inclusion and sulfur isotopic data show that ore minerals were deposited at temperatures between $340^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ from fluid with salinities of 3 to 6 equiv. wt % NaCl. Evidence of fluid boiling (and $CO_2$ effervescence) indicates a maximum pressures of 100 bars. The formation temperature and $fs_2$, of Au-mineralization from the Namsan mines are mainly $280{\sim}230^{\circ}C$ and $10^{-11}{\sim}10^{-13}$ atm, respectively. Au deposition was likely a result of boiling caused to chemical change (pH, $f_{O2}$, ${\Sigma}_{H_2S{\cdot}{\cdot}}$) of ore-fluids. Sulfur isotope composition of sulfide minerals (${\delta}^{34}S=5.1$ to 8.2‰) are consistent with ${\delta}^{34}S_{{\Sigma}{H2S}}$ value of +6 to +7‰, suggesting an igneous source of sulfur partially mixed with wall-rock sulfur.
