  • The suicide rate in the elderly is continually increasing. Effective suicide prevention requires that factors affecting suicidal ideation are specifically identified and personalized intervention programs are developed. This study aimed to identify the influencing factors of suicidal ideation in Korean elderly. The data of the 2012 Korean National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed by using the SPSS program. Frequency, percentile, Chi-square test, multiple logistic regression were used. The influencing factors of suicidal ideation were education, income, exercise, perceived stress and depression. The Odds Ratio of the depression was 5.68 and the Odds Ratio of the perceived stress was 3.45. This study suggested that elderly suicidal prevention programs should be developed in preventing and reducing stress and depression.

For six monthes from September 2008 to March 2009, researchers of Chungnam province studied 1,400 adults living in 7 cities and counties who are more than nineteen years old. Of those surveyed, suicide ideation, suicide plan and suicide attempt rates were 15.9%, 4.3% and 1.8% each. In conclusion, to prevent and manage suicide behavior effectively, we propose that people with more stress, greater depression, old age, lower quality of life and unemployment should be managed primarily.

  • The main object of the study is to investigate factors affecting the suicide ideation. According to the socioemotional selectivity theory, because of limitation of life time, the family relationship is more important for elderly than young or middle aged group. Based on this theory authors hypothesizes that the familism may show negative relationship with suicide ideation only in elderly group. The data for the study comes from the survey titled understanding on the successful aging of Korean people conducted in 2008. The sample size of the survey is 1,000 and the survey was conducted by the face to face interview with the standardized questionnaire. According to the analysis, familism shows negative relationship with suicide ideation only in elderly group, not in young or middle adult group.

  • Depression and mental illness across all age groups, and steady increasing in suicide rate are our major social problems which cause dramatically decreasing government competitiveness. While Korean government has implemented various policies to improve mental health and prevent suicide, it faces revealing issues in progress on implementation and referral management systems. The current research examined domestic and foreign cases to understand the actual status and directivity of ICT convergence plan in terms of mental health. The United States and the United Kingdom have provided convergent ICT service, telepsychiatric care to senior citizens in rural areas, children and adolescents, socially disadvantaged class, etc. In Korea, emergency-notice devices are installed to prevent suicide for single elderly people, and diverse mobile health devices are developing to cure depression and Alzheimer's disease. ICT convergent mental health care service is needed to save socioeconomic costs and realize universal welfare for an aging society. Social consensus on sharply conflict issues, medical law and medical devices about telepsychiatry service, effectiveness studies on users' unique psychiatric characteristics by life cycle, and region-specialized strategies for the least densely populated rural regions with lower access to medical care should be considered.

(2) High self-evaluation was a risk factor for running away among individuals that smoked and had no suicide ideation. (3) Drinking was predicted as a risk factor for no smokers, while family life dissatisfaction was predicted as a risk factor among non-smokers that drank. (4) Negative relationship with mother was predicted as a risk factor among non-drinking non-smoking.
