  • The preliminary design of suction pile as the supporting system for concrete floating structures was performed for the pilot project of the southwest coast area in Korea. Prior to starting design work, site conditions of the area including ground and hydraulic conditions, and a 100-year return period external force were throughly evaluated. The suction pile for mooring of the offshore floating structures has to satisfy the lateral resistance against external force as well as the penetration ability according to the soil conditions such as soil types, shear strengths, effective stresses, and seepage forces. In the design, the required penetration depths, which were stable for lateral resistance, were evaluated with the diameters of cylindrical suction pile as the final installing ones. And the design suction pressures at each penetrating depths, at which sand boiling did not occur, were assessed through the comparison of penetration and penetrationresistance forces. As a result, it was impossible for suction piles with the diameter range of 3.0~5.0 m to penetrate into required penetration depths. On the other hand, suction piles with the diameter range of 6.0 m and 7.0 m satisfied both the horizontal stability and the penetration ability by design suction pressures at the required penetration depths of 8.5 m and 8.0 m, respectively.

  • Pick-and-place systems using suction cups have been being widely used and continuously developed in production automation. There are, however, some drawbacks in constructing such systems. One of them is that it generates high level noise due to air compressors. And the system must have complex constitutions of mechanical component such as air compressors, air tubes, air valves, etc. Moreover, it needs continuous air supply to maintain vacuum in suction cups. If there is a failure in any suction cup, the total suction system may fail owing to air leakage. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose PMS (Permanent Magnet Suction) mechanism which has permanent magnets for vacuuming suction cups with no air compressor. The basic concept of PMS mechanism is to rotate permanent magnets with fixed angle. Simple rotation of permanent magnets changes the direction of the magnetic force applied at the suction cups. Since each suction cup has no direct connection with any of the others, the air leakage at one suction cup is not critical. The proposed suction mechanism was designed and fabricated. With some experiments, the feasibility and performance of the PMS mechanism was shown. The strong points of the PMS mechanism are in its simple structure, generating low noise, high energy efficiency, and no need of continuous energy supply.

  • We investigated a carbon nanotube (CNT) oscillator controlled by the thermal gas expansion using classical molecular dynamics simulations. When the temperature rapidly increased, the force on the CNT oscillator induced by the thermal gas expansion rapidly increased and pushed out the CNT oscillator. As the CNT oscillator extruded from the outer nanotube, the suction force on the CNT oscillator increased by the excess van der Waals(vdW) energy. When the CNT oscillator reached at the maximum extrusion point, the CNT oscillator was encapsulated into the outer nanotube by the suction force. Therefore, the CNT oscillator could be oscillated by both the gas expansion and the excess vdW interaction. As the temperature increased, the amplitude of the CNT oscillator increased. At the high temperatures, the CNT oscillator escaped from the outer nanotube, because the force on the CNT oscillator due to the thermal gas expansion was higher than the suction force due to the excess vdW energy. By the appropriate temperature controls, such as the maximum temperature, the heating rate, and the cooling rate, the CNT oscillator could be operated.

  • This paper shows a design of a gripper with an adjustable working area to depalletize a delivery cardboard box of various sizes. The gripper should pick the box with only one flat surface to lift the boxes stacked close to each other. The lift force of the gripper is the vacuum suction force. To handle boxes of various sizes, the gripper adjusts the working area. The gripper operates four vacuum generators independently. The simultaneous rotation on different axes of four gripper-arms with suction cups moves the position of suction force. The six operation modes of the gripper are divided into the size of the working area. The operation mode is determined according to the size of the top side of the box. Experiments are conducted by lifting the box of various sizes. The gripper can pick the box of various sizes without vacuum leaks from unused cups. Also, the experiments verify the improvement of stability of the box by adjusting the working area of the gripper. The gripper can lift the box without deformation of the box by adjusting the working area.

  • Anchors have been commonly used to as foundation systems of the structures that require the uplift resistance. Recently anchors have been used in ocean sediment for mooring systems to stabilizeoffshore structures. In the saturated clayey soil however suction developed between the soil and andchor and affects the uplift capacity of anchor. To estimate the uplift capacity of the andchor accurately, the failure mechanisms of the andchor by the uplift force should also be correctly assumed. The uplift capacity is usually expressed in terms of breakout factors with respect to embedment ratio. In this paper, a two-dimensional plane strain numerical investigation into the vertical uplift capacity of a plate andchor in a clayey soil is described. The breakout factor against their corresponding values of embedment ratio was calculated and plotted along a single curve. The modes of failure mechanism at shallow and deep andchors are also presented.

  • A submerged body moving near the free surface needs to maintain its attitude and position to accomplish missions. It is necessary to validate the performance of a designed controller before a sea trial. The hydrodynamic coefficients of maneuvering are generally obtained by experiments or computational fluid dynamics, but these coefficients have uncertainty. Environmental loads such as the wave exciting force and suction force act on the submerged body when it moves near the free surface. Thus, a controller for the submerged body should be robust to parameter uncertainty and environmental loads. In this paper, the six-degree-of-freedom equations of motions for the submerged body are constructed. The suction force is calculated using the double Rankine body method. An adaptive control method based on an artificial neural network and proportional-integral-derivative control are used for the depth controller. Simulations are performed under various depth and speed conditions, and the results show the effectiveness of the designed controller.

  • In this study, the force and moment acting on a Joubert BB2 submarine model at depths near the free surface were measured through a captive model test with the scale ratio of 1/15. Based on the experiment, the pitch moment and heave force due to the "Tail suction effect", including the change in surge force with depth near the free surface, were quantitatively analyzed. The change of force and moment according to the relative position of the sail and the free surface was reviewed with the free surface waves generated for each depths. As a result, the angle of attack of the hull to counteract the pitch moment induced by the tail suction effect was derived. The effect of the hydrostatic moment component according to the angle of attack on the equilibrium of pitch moment was also taken into account. The control plane performance tests for the X-type rudder and sail plane were conducted in snorkel and surface depth conditions to figure out the control plane angles for the neutral level flight of the submarine at near free surface. The results of this study are expected to be used as a reference data for the neutral level flight of the submarine at near free surface operation in the free running model test as well as numerical studies.

  • Since matric suction of unsaturated soil was related to soil and ground water contaminations, it is very important to analyze its mechanism that was represented by shear characteristics. In three phases of soil, a little air makes the condition of unsaturated soil on contract or shrinkage surface between water and air. Capillarity and suction in pore of unsaturated soil cause surface tension and surface force so it makes negative pore water pressure and increases effective stress as a result. Therefore, negative pore water pressure in partially saturated soil affects the soil structure and degree of saturation and it is important to evaluate accurately unsaturate flow and behavior. In this study, the shear strength characteristics of the seven sandy soils were investigated using consolidated drained triaxial tests with special emphasis on the effects of the negative pore pressure and the matric suction. These tests involved shearing under either a constant net confining pressure and varying matric suction or under a constant matric suction and varying net normal stress.
