  • The main purpose of this paper is to show that the new paradigm of a period can be constructed by the reinterpretation of the historical precedents or the dialectical mediation between the old and new. We can tell this process the creative dialogue between the past and present. The continuity and rupture, the renovation and succession of the tradition can be understand by this interpretive insight that opens the new horizon in architecture. In oder to prove this preconception this paper analyses the ideas and design principles of Le Corbusier. By showing how his main ideas and principles are formulated we can understand his unique position as a modernist and characteristics of his architecture. It is also the another purpose of this paper. This paper first looks into various aspects of his architecture and his personal background, then Investigates his unique approach to historical precedents. By the imaginative eye and comparison with inspiration he connected contemporary situation to the tradition and was able to deduce a new paradigm in architecture. His way of making relationship with the past was a priori, dialectical, and fundamentalistic. He always searched for universal norm, eternal rules, and timeless principles which are also modern and new. This both side shows well his characteristics and his architecture. Eventually he could invent a Modern language of architecture by the several ways of dialogue between the modem and the classical, new technology and old convention. We can say that his way of dialogue is a kind of reinterpretation of the historical precedents which enables open the future of architecture.

  • In this paper, a strategy for utilizing the Korean tradi-tional spaces and interior design elements in inner space in order to express Korean-style interior design has been studied. Characteristics of Korean tradition was gathered from literatures in two categories; space and el-ements. Space again has been studied in detail in the area of split, continuity, hierarchy, elasticity, dynamics. And study of elements includes floor, wall, ceiling, dan-chung, lattice, laytiles on a roof, rafter, extended eaves, the line of eaves. 30 Korean restaurants were selected, analysed and compared with literature review. Based on the compari-son, a strategy for proper expression and utilization of Korean tradition is suggested. In the process of compari-son, current status of implementation and problems were found. Traditional elements are used in about 50% of Korean restaurants located in hotels, and 25% of those located in department stores. With the survey and other professional's opinions, an implementation plan is suggest-ed as follows; 1. Succession design method of tradition should use main-ly amelioration method and use copy and partly abstraction method. 2. Expression of tradition has to include all of space, ele-ments, and decoration. In space structure, Korean tra-dition space structure must be applied. 3. In order to design with feeling of Korean tradition, various different Korean elements have to be used. 4. In order to express high quality design, high-quality elements has to be used.

  • This paper explores the inlaying technique of Geum-Cheol Kim, a joiner has made the traditional Korean furniture mostly popular in Tong Yeong in Gyeongnam province in Korea. He has adopted the technique in creating his furniture since he started learning and working the furniture making at sixteen years old. So he is only the cabinet maker with the technique in Tong Yeong GN. Samhojang, Seongtaenoemun, Gwuinoemun, and so on are the techniques inlaid in the furniture like Jang, Nong, Beoseonjang, Mungap and so on. The Tong-yeong techniques are even more difficult and take longer time than other ordinary inlays to be created, but they are very secured and last longer. And the techniques are very beautiful but today they are not well-known and used in Korea. Hence, the succession and preservation of the techniques are needed from the joiner to younger generation. Futhermore, the development on the easier and shorter process to create them is needed to be popular throughout Korea in order to be useful for contemporary furniture.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the ecologically suitable restoration characteristics in riparian slopes constructed by continuous fiber soil reinforced system (Geofiber system) which does not contain the concrete materials. The findings are as follows : (1) as the tested soil was not washed away by rainfalls and floods, Geofiber could replace the concrete wall and gravity stone net bag technique from the civil engineering structural point of view; (2) after one year of the construction, it was monitored that land cover ratio was 80-90%, which indirectly shows that vegetation is safely maintained; and (3) at the same time, 5-8 flora species were found in each test grid and more importantly dominant species have been moved from alien species to native herbaceous plants. From the above findings, Geofiber system is recommendable to restore the riparian slopes in terms of stability and natural landscape points. However, a long term monitering is needed considering flora succession process in a given environment as well as suitability tests should be carried out through the comparative investigations in other environments.

  • This study investigates the relationship of two architectures 'Kim Sa-haeng' and 'Park Ja-cheong.' They were the architects whose architecture were established and well known however they were not acknowledged by the people. Because they were not revealed under the large-scale national construction in complicated circumstances at home and abroad. The results were as follows; First, Kim Sa-haeng who was an overseas architect in Yuan dynasty stood out in all areas of architecture. Particularly in making royal tombs; His works were recognized as the most beautiful royal tombs ever existed and was later on followed by the Joseon dynasty. Second, Park completed the construction of Joseon's by faithfully reflecting on the discussed process of Neo-Confucian while coming after the time of the construction of Kim Sa-haeng. Third, although Kim Sa-haeng was a vassal of the Buddhist nation in Goryeo, he built the Moon-myo, a Confucian inspired temple of Joseon. Park Ja-cheong, who continued to build Kim Sa-haeng's architecture, reproduced Kim Sa-haeng's confucian's temple of Joseon dynasty while modifying it according to the situation in Joseon dynasty. The constructions of the two architects' monuments continues unabatedly. Their architecture has continued without massive changes.

  • To elucidate succession of bacterial populations, especially nitrifying bacteria during the composting of cattle manure with apple pomace, fluorescent in situ hybridization(FISH) using rRNA targeted oligonucleotide probes were applied. The density of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was ranged from $3,3{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw to $13,4{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw with the peak value after 26 composting days whereas that of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria varied between $6.0{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw and $17.2{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw with the peak value after 7 composting days. And the tendency that the numbers of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were higher than those of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, and the peak-time of their densities were the same as that of data determined by the ratio of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria to eubacteria. The peak of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria followed the peak of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, at the late phase of composting process could be probably caused by the depletion of volatile ammonia of composting materials. Besides these results indicate that FISH method is a useful tool for detection of slow growing nitrifying bacteria.
