Sociomathematical Norms of Elementary School Classrooms: Crossnational Perspectives between Korea and U .S. on Challenges of Reform in Mathematics Teaching (초등학교 수학교실의 사회수학적 규범: 수학 지도에서의 개혁상의 문제에 대한 한국과 미국의 관점 비교)

  • The case of four classrooms analyzed in this study point to many commonalities in the challenges of reforming mathematics teaching in Korea and the U. S. In both national contexts we have seen the need fur a clear distinction between implementing new student-centered social practices in the classroom, and providing significant new loaming opportunities for students. In particular, there is an important need to distinguish between attending to the social practices of the classroom and attending to students conceptual development within those social practices. In both countries, teachers in the less successful student-centered classes tended to abdicate responsibility fur sense making to the students. They were more inclined to attend to the literal statements of their students without analyzing their conceptual understanding (Episodes KA5 and UP 2). This is easy to do when the rhetoric of reform emphasizes student-centered social practices without sufficient attention to psychological correlates of those social practices. The more successful teachers tended to monitor the understanding of the students and to take proactive measures to ensure the development of that understanding (Episodes KO5 and UN3). This suggests the usefulness of constructivism as a model (or successful student-centered instruction. As Simon(1995) observed, constructivist teachers envision a hypothetical learning trajectory that constitutes their plan and expectation for students learning from the particular if the trajectory is being followed. If not, the teacher adjusts or supplements the task to obtain a more satisfactory result, or reconsider her or his assumptions concerning the hypothetical learning trajectory. In this way, the teacher acts proactively to try to ensure that students are progressing in their understanding in particular ways. Thus the more successful student-centered teacher of this study can be seen as constructivist in their orientation to student conceptual development, in comparison to the less successful student-centered teachers. It is encumbant on the authors of reform in Korea and the U. S. to make sure that reform is not trivialized, or evaluated only on the surface of classroom practices. The commonalities of the two reform endeavores suggest that Korea and the U. S. have much to share with each other in the challenges of reforming mathematics teaching for the new millennium.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze trade environment and examine a commercial practices for a successful launching of Indian market In general, Indian trade environment is composed of a natural environment, religious peculiarity, history and politic and economic prospect. In order to understand Indian commercial practices and secure business achievements, its national character, mode of living, customs related to foods and social relations such as exchange of gifts, religious taboos, tendency of product preference should be recognized. The results of the study indicate mostly that even though an excellent brand image, a good quality and an efficient sales network are a basic factor for making of a successful business, practically it is more important to understand a business customs and national character of indian people. Because business is accomplished through relationship between human beings eventually.

Understanding Student-Centered Teaching Practices in Elementary Mathematics Classrooms

  • Although student-centered teaching practices have been advocated in mathematics education reform, implementing them at the classroom level remains challenging. This exploratory case study examined two unevenly successful student-centered approaches to see how teachers understand and characterize reform, and to articulate issues in implementing reform ideas. The comparison and contrast between the classrooms showed similar classroom social norms but dramatically different mathematical practices. This affords the possibility of exploring the challenges of reform for teachers and other personnel who are attempting to move teaching practices towards the student-centered ideals.

  • This paper explores how unequally successful mathematics practices were constructed in the two elementary mathematics classrooms. The interview data that pertain to the two teachers' personal reflections on the influences on their professional development were used as a source of inquiry to identify the underlying factors that might account for the differences and the similarities in implementing reform ideals in teaching mathematics. This affords not only exploration of the challenges of moving teaching practices toward student-centered approaches but also insight of the processes of developing mathematics teaching practices through teachers\`own career paths.

  • According to the Gartner Group, the market for ERP software in Korea is growing rapidly. However, the number of successful ERP implementations is quite few. Standard(unmodified) ERP's are built based on best practices. Improvements expected from successful implementation are based on best practices built into the software. Many improvements are lost through modification to "standard" software. Even minor changes in software can significantly reduce benefits. Both implementation time and risk factors are increased with modifications. We introduce a methodology, called package Enable Re-engineering (PER) and the main components of change management program by Ernst & Young. "To-Be" model could be developed through the software capabilities. And change management processes such as continuous education and self-developments are required. The philosophy of the change management processes is to let the software package drive the re-engineering practices and avoid moving the software toward the "As-IS" process. Extensive top management involvement, major focus on speed, extensive communication program, and "clear" picture of the future are essential components of change management. We are sure that the complied experiences and model have implications for practice and for academicians for their endeavors in their fields.

  • The propose of this study was to investigate the management characteristics of assisted living facility(ALF) as an housing alternative for semi-dependent elderly. For this purpose, 5 ALFs which have been well known as best practices in rural Virginia were selected for a multi- site case study. Face-to-face interview with administrators or assistant administrators of i facilities were done. In addition to this, written materials about the each facility and personal record from researcher were used to analyze the data. Six management categories including 82 open-ended questions were analyzed and successful examples and management difficulties were identified from best practices. Based on the results, some recommendations for development of ALFs in Korean elderly were suggested. In short, this study found that best practices which were selected and analyzed in this study showed that successful management was resulted from continuous efforts of the stalls to provide better services in order for improving the quality of life of their residents.

  • The present paper deals with the mulberry cultivation technology with package of practices for successful sericulture in Indian sub-tropics. The information on leaf nutritional quality in trained and untrained trees is provided. Besides, the current status of sericultural practices is discussed based on the problems faced by the industry and intensive field surveys undertaken in different areas of one of the most potential sericultural provinces.

Intervening in Mathematics Group Work in the Middle Grades

  • Over the last three decades, there has been an increasingly strong emphasis on group-centered approaches to mathematics teaching. One primary responsibility for teachers who use group-centered instruction is to "check in", or intervene, with groups to monitor group learning and provide mathematical support when necessary. While prior research has contributed valuable insight for successful teacher interventions in mathematics group work, there is a need for more fine-grained analyses of interactions between teachers and students. In this study, we co-conducted research with an exemplary middle grade teacher (Ms. Green) to learn about fine-grained details of her intervention practices, hoping to generate knowledge about successful teacher interventions that can be expanded, replicated, and/or contradicted in other contexts. Analyzing Ms. Green's practices as an exemplary case, we found that she used exceptionally short interventions (35 seconds on average), provided space for student dialogue, and applied four distinct strategies to support groups to make mathematical progress: (1) observing/listening before speaking; (2) using a combination of social and analytic scaffolds; (3) redirecting students to task instructions; (4) abruptly walking away. These findings imply that successful interventions may be characterized by brevity, shared dialogue between the teacher and students, and distinct (and sometimes unnatural) teaching moves.

A Study on Artificial Intelligence Based Business Models of Media Firms

  • The aim of this study is to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) based business models of media firms. We define AI and discuss 'AI activity model'. The practices of the efficiency model are home equipment-based personalization and media content recommendation. The practices of the expert model are media content commissioning, content rights negotiation, copyright infringement, and promotion. The practices of the effectiveness model are photo & video auto-tagging and auto subtitling & simultaneous translation. The practices of the innovation model are content script creation and metadata management. The related use cases from 2012 to 2017 are introduced along the four activity models of AI. In conclusion, we propose for media companies to fully utilize the AI for transforming from traditional to successful digital media firms.
