Development of a Robotic Transplanter for Bedding Plants(I) - Machine Vision System - (육묘용 로봇 이식기의 개발(I) - 기계시각 시스템 -)

  • This study was conducted to develope a machine vision system for a robotic transplanter for bedding plants. Specific objectives of this study were 1) to get coordinates of the healthy seedlings in high-density plug tray, and 2) to get the angle of the leaves of the healthy seedlings to avoid the damage to seedlings by gripper. Results of this study were summarized as follows. (1) The machine vision system of a robotic transplanter was developed. (2) Success rates of detecting empty cell and bad seedlings for 72-cell and 128-cell plug-trays were 98.8% and 94, 9% respectively. (3) Success rates of calculating the angle of leaves fer 72-cell and 128-cell plug-trays were 93.5% and 91.0% respectively.

  • This study was conducted to develope the machine vision system of a robotic transplanter for bedding plants. Endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux in pediatric patients

  • Endoscopic treatment is a minimally invasive treatment for managing patients with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Although several bulking agents have been used for endoscopic treatment, dextranomer/hyaluronic acid is the only bulking agent currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating VUR. Endoscopic treatment of VUR has gained great popularity owing to several obvious benefits, including short operative time, short hospital stay, minimal invasiveness, high efficacy, low complication rate, and reduced cost. Initially, the success rates of endoscopic treatment have been lower than that of open antireflux surgery. However, because injection techniques have been developed, a recent study showed higher success rates of endoscopic treatment than open surgery in the treatment of patients with intermediate- and high-grade VUR. Despite the controversy surrounding its effectiveness, endoscopic treatment is considered a valuable treatment option and viable alternative to long-term antibiotic prophylaxis.

Factors affecting feeding activity of grey herons in a reservoir during the breeding season

  • To examine factors affecting feeding efficiency of grey herons (Ardea cinerea), the foraging behavior was studied at a reservoir in Asan city, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea during the breeding seasons (from April to July) of 2006 and 2007. Four factors (age of foraging birds, time of day, breeding stage, and microhabitat type) were analyzed. Adults were more efficient foragers than recently fledged juveniles, and they had a higher success rate than juveniles. About half of the adults caught large prey, whereas most juveniles caught only small prey. Adult grey herons had different feeding efficiency according to the breeding stage. Pecking and capture rates were high during the late period (fledging stage), and biomass intake rates were high during the early (incubating stage) and late periods. However, time of day had no significant effect on foraging activity of adult grey herons. Feeding activities of adult grey herons also showed significant variation among microhabitat types. Pecking and capture rates were higher in the submerged plants area, but capture success rate and biomass intake rate were not different according to microhabitat type.

Surgical Management of Coexisting Glaucoma and Cataract (녹내장과 백내장이 동반된 환자의 수술적 치료)

  • The management of coincident glaucoma and cataract is not only a common clinical challenge but also an important research topic in the ophthalmic surgical field. The purpose of this article is to compare the different surgical options on the basis of their achievable postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) control, success rates, and complication rates reported in the related literature, and to give advice on how to manage typical situations of patients with both glaucoma and cataract. Main topics were focused on indications and rationale of 3 surgical options (only cataract surgery first and later trabeculectomy, only trabeculectomy first and later cataract surgery, or simultaneous combined surgery). Modern clear corneal cataract extraction techniques resulted in a modest intermediate-term reduction of IOP and has considerably improved the success rates of combined glaucoma and cataract surgery. It also enabled future trabeculectomy to be successfully performed at a later date if necessary. Trabeculectomy alone achieved better IOP regulation than phacotrabeculectomy (combined surgery), but subsequent cataract surgery may compromise preexisting filtering bleb. Combined surgery augmented with mitomycin C achieved a lower IOP than combined surgery alone but had a higher complication rate. In conclusion, the choice of the preferred surgical method should be determined according to the target pressure, the amount of glaucomatous damage, and the grade of visual disturbance caused by the cataract. Phacotrabeculectomy with adjunctive mitomycin C offers visual improvement and achieves the best IOP lowering of all types of combined glaucoma and cataract surgery currently used but is associated with potentially sight-threatening complications.

Evaluation of factors influencing the success rate of orthodontic microimplants using panoramic radiographs

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing the success rate of orthodontic microimplants (OMIs) using panoramic radiographs (PRs). Methods: We examined 160 OMIs inserted bilaterally in the maxillary buccal alveolar bone between the second premolars and first molars of 80 patients (51 women, 29 men; mean age, $18.0{\pm}6.1years$) undergoing treatment for malocclusion. The angulation and position of OMIs, as well as other parameters, were measured on PRs. The correlation between each measurement and the OMI success rate was then evaluated. Results: The overall success rate was 85.0% (136/160). Age was found to be a significant predictor of implant success (p < 0.05), while sex, side of placement, extraction, and position of the OMI tip were not significant predictors (p > 0.05). The highest success rate was observed for OMIs with tips positioned on the interradicular midline (IRML; central position). Univariate analyses revealed that the OMI success rate significantly increased with an increase in the OMI length and placement height of OMI (p = 0.001). However, in simultaneous analyses, only length remained significant (p = 0.027). Root proximity, distance between the OMI tip and IRML, interradicular distance, alveolar crest width, distance between the OMI head and IRML, and placement angle were not factors for success. Correlations between the placement angle and all other measurements except root proximity were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that OMIs positioned more apically with a lesser angulation, as observed on PRs, exhibit high success rates.

Simulation Study on Parentage Analysis with SNPs in the Japanese Black Cattle Population

  • Parentage tests using polymorphic DNA marker are commonly performed to avoid incorrect recording of the parental information of livestock animals, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are becoming the method of choice. In Japanese Black cattle, parentage tests based on the exclusion method using microsatellite markers are currently conducted; however, an alternative SNP system aimed at parentage tests has recently been developed. In the present study, two types of simulations were conducted using the pedigree data of two subpopulations in the breed (subpopulations of Hyogo and Shimane prefectures) in order to examine the effect of actual genetic and breeding structures. The first simulation (simulation 1) investigated the usefulness of SNPs for excluding a close relative of the true sire; the second one (simulation 2) investigated the accuracy of sire identification tests for multiple full-sib putative sires by a combined method of exclusion and paternity assignment based on the LOD score. The success rates of excluding a single fullsib and sire of the true sires were, respectively, 0.9915 and 0.9852 in Hyogo and 0.9848 and 0.9852 in Shimane, when 50 SNPs with minor allele frequency (MAF: q) of 0.25${\leq}$q${\leq}$0.35 were used in simulation 1. The success rates of sire identification tests based solely on the exclusion method were relatively low in simulation 2. However, assuming that 50 SNPs with MAF of 0.25${\leq}$q${\leq}$0.35 or 0.45${\leq}$q${\leq}$0.5 were available, the total success rates including achievements due to paternity assignment were, respectively, 0.9430 and 0.9681 in Hyogo and 0.8999 and 0.9399 for Shimane, even when each true sire was assumed to compete with 50 full-sibs.

Analysis of Kickers' Strategic Actions for Finishing in Penalty Shoot-outs (승부차기 상황에서의 키커의 골 결정 전략행동 분석)

  • The present study aims to analyze kickers' strategic actions for finishing in penalty shoot-outs among youth soccer players ultimately to increase success rates of shoot-outs and to score a victory. Subjects were experienced 271 soccer players attending high schools located around the capital area. To determine any difference in strategic actions for finishing in penalty shoot-outs among the subjects, frequency analysis or chi-square was used for the analysis. The analysis found the following points: First, the success or failure rates of kickers in penalty shoot-outs were found to depend on subjects' experiences as soccer players. Second, in terms of kickers' shooting qualities, they were found to shoot on goal regardless of shooting positions. Third, an important factor to enhance the shoot-outs probability was found to be a strategic action through the eyes. Fourth, in view of the strategic actions prior to kickers' shooting, goalies were found to check out kickers' positions first and estimate the directions and qualities of shooting via kickers' body actions and eye lines.

Variations of AlexNet and GoogLeNet to Improve Korean Character Recognition Performance

  • Deep learning using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is being studied in various fields of image recognition and these studies show excellent performance. In this paper, we compare the performance of CNN architectures, KCR-AlexNet and KCR-GoogLeNet. The experimental data used in this paper is obtained from PHD08, a large-scale Korean character database. It has 2,187 samples of each Korean character with 2,350 Korean character classes for a total of 5,139,450 data samples. In the training results, KCR-AlexNet showed an accuracy of over 98% for the top-1 test and KCR-GoogLeNet showed an accuracy of over 99% for the top-1 test after the final training iteration. We made an additional Korean character dataset with fonts that were not in PHD08 to compare the classification success rate with commercial optical character recognition (OCR) programs and ensure the objectivity of the experiment. While the commercial OCR programs showed 66.95% to 83.16% classification success rates, KCR-AlexNet and KCR-GoogLeNet showed average classification success rates of 90.12% and 89.14%, respectively, which are higher than the commercial OCR programs' rates. Considering the time factor, KCR-AlexNet was faster than KCR-GoogLeNet when they were trained using PHD08; otherwise, KCR-GoogLeNet had a faster classification speed.

Evaluation of Autotransplantation (자가치아이식술의 장기적인 임상적 평가)

  • Purpose: Many clinical studies have reported that higher success rates are achieved with teeth that have immature roots than other autotransplanted teeth that have more immature root. However, based on date published recently, the success rate of autotransplantation of teeth with complete root formation was higher. The purpose of this study was to examine the long term(2 to 6 years follow-up) success rate of autotransplantation of third molar with complete root formation and to discuss some conditions and prerequisites for success. Materials and Methods: 26 sites of 24 patients aged 26 to 55 (mean age 40.8) were autotransplanted with third molars with complete root formation. These cases were followed for 2 to 6 years after surgery. The success criteria included (1) no discomfort during functioning (2) absence of progressive root resorption and alveolar bone resorption. Result: Of 26 teeth 5 teeth were failed, therefore success rate is 81%(21/26 teeth). The results suggested that higher success rate is acquired from (1) extraction socket due to dental caries (2) mandibular recipient site (3) patient younger than 40 years old. Autotransplantation of third molar to replace molars with advanced periodontal disease also showed considerably high success rate(84%). Conclusion: With appropriate case selection, autotransplantation of third molar with complete root formation remains a viable alternative for replacing a missing molar tooth.
