The purpose of the study was to initially investigate the concentration patterns of $PM_1$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ in the Seoul subway lines, and then to figure out the PM behaviors of internal and external sources inside subway tunnels. The PMs were monitored by a light scattering real-time monitor during winter (Jan. 8-26 in 2015) and summer (July 2-Aug. 7 in 2015) in tunnel air, in passenger cabin air, and in the ambient air. The daily average $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_1$ concentrations on these object lines were $101.3{\pm}38.4$, $81.5{\pm}30.2$, and $59.7{\pm}19.9{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. On an average, the PM concentration was about 1.2 times higher in winter than in summer and about 1.5 times higher in underground tunnel sections than in ground sections. In this study, we also calculated extensively the average PM mass ratios for $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$, $PM_1/PM_{10}$, and $PM_1/PM_{2.5}$; for example, the range of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ ratio in tunnel air was 0.82-0.86 in underground tunnel air, while that was 0.48-0.68 in outdoor ground air. The ratio was much higher in tunnel air than in outdoor air and was always higher in summer than in winter in case of outdoor air. It seemed from the results that the in/out air quality as well as a proper amount of subway ventilation must be significant influence factors in terms of fine PM management and control for the tunnel air quality improvement.

In this study, we have observed PM-10 and $CO_2$ concentration in the subway cabins and analyzed the factors affecting air quality using a multivariate statistical analysis. The measurements have been conducted at Seoul metropolitan subway lines. The results show that the mean concentration of the PM-10 and $CO_2$ inside subway cabins is in the range of 62.6 to 108.0 ${\mu}g/m^3$ and 907 to 2,008 ppm, respectively. $CO_2$ level in specific sections during the rush hours has exceeded air quality guidelines for public transportation, which requires designated train ventilation controls. Correlation and regression analyses of influencing factors imply that $CO_2$ level is severely influenced by the number of passengers and PM-10 level is also correlated with the number of passengers. In particular, PM-10 level in the cabins indicates a positive correlation with outdoor PM-10 level. In addition, the PM concentration has been highly affected by the number of passengers and distance between stations.
With increasing concerns of indoor air quality, $CO_2$ concentration in the public transportation, such as train, bus, and subway, draws big interests. The $CO_2$ concentration in the indoor air is regarded as index of ventilation status rather than that of adverse health effect. In this study, we measured the time-series of $CO_2$ concentrations in the KTX cabin during the journey of Gyongbu-line (Seoul-Busan) and Honam-line (Seoul-Mokpo) with the number of passengers on board. At the same time, the concentration of particulate matter (PM), temperature, humidity and gaseous pollutants including HCHO and VOCs were monitored. It is found that the $CO_2$ concentration was correlated linearly with number of passengers and was highly correlated with tunnel regions where the ventilation unit (flap) was closed.
In order to prepare an efficient solution for PM10 reduction in underground stations, the authors measured PM10 concentration levels every 30 minutes in the concourse, platform, and tunnel of Gaehwasan Station of Seoul's subway line 5. Through a correlation analysis of each changing pattern of PM10 concentration, the direction and velocity of diffusion in underground stations were estimated. The PM10 concentration levels were highest in the tunnel, followed by the platform and concourse. PM10 concentrations in the tunnel, platform, and concourse showed a pattern of increasing in the rush hours and decreasing in the non-rush hours. According to the statistical analysis of PM10 concentrations and changing patterns in each location, the higher PM10 concentration in the tunnel expanded to the platform, and some from the platform expanded to the concourse. Therefore, to efficiently reduce PM10 concentrations, it is essential to detect the centralized generation, diffusion factor, expanding route, expanding measure, and other variables and to remove or reduce the diffusion factor and level. Through operating the ventilation system in the right time frame while the PM10 concentration level increases, the power consumption and peak power consumption can be reduced.

Seoul subway plays an important part for the public transportation service in Seoul metropolitan area. As the subway system is typically a closed environment, frequent air pollution problems occurred and passengers get malhealth impact. Especially particulate matters (PM) is well known as one of the major pollutants in subway environments. The purpose of this study was to compare the concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in the Seoul subway system and to provide fundamental data in order to management of subway system. $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected in the M station platform and tunnel of Subway Line 4 in Seoul metropolitan and in an outdoor location close to it from Apr. 21, 2010~Oct. 27, 2013. The samples collected on teflon filters using $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ mini-volume portable samplers and PM sequential sampler. The PM contributions were $48.6{\mu}g/m^3$ (outdoor), $84.6{\mu}g/m^3$ (platform) and $204.8{\mu}g/m^3$ (tunnel) for $PM_{10}$, and $34.6{\mu}g/m^3$ (outdoor), $49.7{\mu}g/m^3$ (platform) and $83.1{\mu}g/m^3$ (tunnel) for $PM_{2.5}$. The $PM_{10}$ levels inside stations and outdoors are poorly correlated, indicating that $PM_{10}$ levels in the metro system are mainly influenced by internal sources. In this study, we compared PM concentrations before and after operation of ventilation and Electrostatic Precipitator (EP). Despite the increased PM concentration at outdoor, $PM_{10}$ concentration at platform and tunnel showed the 31.2% and 32.3% reduction efficiency after operation the reduction system. The overall results of this study suggest that the installation and operation of the ventilating system and EP should have served as one of the important components for maintaining the air quality in the subway system.
The platform screen door(PSD) is installed in the station of the Seoul Metro 9th line for passengers' safety and comfortable environment of the station. The track way exhaust system(TES) is also operated with PSD to exhaust heat released from train. TES can also be used for the purpose of the heat and smoke control in an emergency case of the carriage fire. When the fire is occurred, operation of TES is switched to the smoke exhaust mode form its normal ventilation mode. In the present study, a subway station of Seoul Metro 9th line is modeled, and a 3-D CFD simulation is performed to investigate effectiveness of designed TES in case of fire. A scenario that a train under fire is arriving the station is simulated for several possible operation modes of the TES using moving mesh technique. As a result, temperature and CO concentration distribution in the station is obtained for each operation modes of TES. The effectiveness of TES operation in case of fire is also discussed.
Background: Subway stations have the characteristics of being located underground and are a representative public-use facility used by an unspecified number of people. As concerns about indoor air quality (IAQ) increase, various management measures are being implemented. However, there are few systematic studies and cases of long-term continuous measurement of underground station air quality. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze changes and factors influencing IAQ in subway stations through real-time continuous long-term measurement using IoT-based IAQ sensing equipment, and to evaluate the IAQ improvement effect of a bio-filter system. Methods: The IAQ of a subway station in Seoul was measured using IoT-based sensing equipment. A bio-filter system was installed after collecting the background concentrations for about five months. Based on the data collected over about 21 months, changes in indoor air quality and influencing factors were analyzed and the reduction effect of the bio-filter system was evaluated. Results: As a result of the analysis, PM10, PM2.5, and CO2 increased during rush hour according to the change in the number of passengers, and PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were high when a PM warning/watch was issued. There was an effect of improving IAQ with the installation of the bio-filter system. The reduction rate of a new-bio-filter system with improved efficiency was higher than that of the existing bio-filter system. Factors affecting PM2.5 in the subway station were the outdoor PM2.5, platform PM2.5, and the number of passengers. Conclusions: The IAQ in a subway station is affected by passengers, ventilation through the air supply and exhaust, and the spread of particulate matter generated by train operation. Based on these results, it is expected that IAQ can be efficiently improved if a bio-filter system with improved efficiency is developed in consideration of the factors affecting IAQ and proper placement.
The smoke removal rate from a room with an opening was investigated for different smoke control systems by using the large eddy simulation turbulence model of the Fire Dynamics Simulator. The decreasing rate of the particles randomly distributed in the 2m X 2m X 2.4m room was com-pared for the ventilation system, pressurization system and extraction system, and for the air flowrate of the ventilation system. Difference in the smoke removal rate among the three smoke control systems was small when the opening was closed. The pressurization system showed less smoke removal rate than the other two systems when the opening existed, and hence is not recommended for subway stations with large openings. It was also shown that a less flowrate in the ventilation system leads to a much longer smoke removal time.
