  • The electric train in the first line subway runs faster in the block from Suwon to Cheonan than the general block. The faster run results in the deterioration of ride quality due to the increase of noise and vibration. To reduce the noise and vibration of the electric train, a running test of the electric train was performed in the block from Suwon to Cheonan. The experimental results show that the sources of the noise and vibration basically comes from the irregularity of the railroad track and the connection part between car body and bogie. The possible countermeasure of the high speed electric train can be the reinforcement of the center pivot to have more flexibility and the frequent maintenance of electric train.

  • Subway is used as a useful transportation method to solve the metropolitan traffic problem for its advantages of being not only accurate, safe and massive, but also of not producing any exhaustion gas in compare with the other ground transportation systems. However, noise inside the car due to concrete based rail track and tunnel structure has become a social problem. So, an analysis on the noise characteristics according to their routes and locations was made on the basis of the actually measured results from the trial run.

  • Steel lining board usually is used as a floor on the temporary steel bridges. It also is installed in the subway construction site. However, in particular in subway construction, renovations and site of old bridges, these steel lining board structures have a problem such as noise, accidents and slip hazards. So steel composite lining board is being developed to solve this problem. Steel composite lining board consists of compressive concrete showing excellent performance in slip, durability, resistance and noise, lower tensile and shear steel showing high safety, effective and superior workability in many respects. Steel composite lining board structure gradually is used in many construction sites, because it has a high quality such as durability, little noise and slip. In this study, flexural tests of steel composite lining board in accordance with welding patterns were conducted to compare the performance of the structure.

  • Sound absorbing materials are applied to the exposed surfaces of curved subway tunnel for the reduction of curving noise level. Before the treatment, acoustical engineering simulation is performed to predict the noise level reduction for different kinds and amounts of absorbing material. The principle of geometrical acoustics is utilized to Peform the simulation efficiently and accurately. The noise levels of the inside and outside of running car body are measured to find the noise level reduction. The average noise level reduction of 8 ㏈ has been attained. It has been shown that the simulated results are comparable to the measured ones.

  • Statistical analysis is performed to estimate the correlations between geological or geographical factor and groundwater inflow rates in the Seoul subway system. Correlation analysis shows that among several geological and geographical factors fractures and streams have most strong effects on inflow rate into tunnels. In particular, subway line 5∼8 are affected more by these factors than subway line 1∼4. Time series analysis is carried out to forecast groundwater inflow rate. Time series analysis is a useful empirical method for simulation and forecasts in case that physical model can not be applied to. The time series of groundwater inflow rates is calculated using the observation data. Transfer function-noise model is applied with the precipitation data as input variables. For time series analysis, statistical methods are performed to identify proper model and autoregressive-moving average models are applied to evaluation of inflow rate. Each model is identified to satisfy the lowest value of information criteria. Results show that the values by result equations are well fitted with the actual inflow rate values. The selected models could give a good explanation of inflow rates variation into subway tunnels.

  • We analyze the capacity of CDMA base stations in the subway environment. We investigate the characteristics of multipath fading, cell structures, and propagation environment in the subway, analyze signal to noise ratio, sectorization gain, path-loss exponent, frequency reuse factor, and obtain the link capacity of a base station in the subway. We measure the peakedness factor and reveal that base stations in the subway have peaked traffic. We use Neal-Wilkinson model to obtain the Erlang capacity instead of Erlang-B model based on Poisson traffic.

  • Noise and vibration induced by subway operation are one of the major factor that annoying residents living near the. railway. In general, lateral vibration was the major concern when we are considering vibration of the building. Since the energy due to earthquake is enormous it affects wide area. However, the vertical vibration became a major concern in considering the vibration induced by subway because relatively smaller energy affects only nearby areas than that of earthquake. Analysis model of the structure for the vertical vibration should consider the effect of beam vibration. Thus, the model of the structure for the lateral vibration can not be applied. Appropriate analysis model which can consider the inertia force of the beam is necessary when analyzing a structure for the vertical vibration. Modeling technique for the vertical vibration analysis of structures has been studied on this paper. It is recommeneded to use 2 or more elements for columns and to use 3 or more elements for beams when analyzing structures for vertical vibration induced by subway.

  • Vibration caused by railroad vehicle including subway train running raises a lot of problems to the neighboring buildings. Therefore lots of methods to isolate the railway vibration have been studied and practically applied to sites. As one of them, specially designed vibration isolation device was installed in the some section of Seoul subway. This device is installed between the rail and track slab. Because the process of installation is relatively simple, this method can be applied to the existing railways in servicing. We measured the vibration and noise to check the effectiveness of this device before and after the installation. The result showed that the vibration level of the slab and platform was reduced to 7 - 10 dB. Expecially high frequency component was reduced to a large amount. From this result, we can conclude that these kind of devices are useful to the reduction of the railroad vibration, expecially the high frequency vibration which can cause structure born noise.

  • Squeal noise is generated by railway vehicles transversing tight curves. This squeal has always been noticed as one of the most disturbing noise sources of railway systems. At present we cannot predicted squeal noise that is influenced by a large number of dependent parameters. In this study, we performed structural analysis to find out the frequency of the wheel and also measured squeal noise at Seoul subway line 1, line 2, line 4 for domestic EMU(Electrical Multiple Unit).
