  • A strategy of the optimal shape design with FEA(Finite Element Analysis) for 2-D structure is proposed by comparing subproblem approximation method with first order approximation method. A cantilever beam with two different loading conditions, a concentrated load and an evenly distribute load, and truss structure with a concentrated loading condition are implemented to optimize the shape. It gives a good design strategy on the optimal truss structure as well as the optimal cantilever beam shape. It is found that the convergence is quickly finished with the iteration number below ten. Optimized shapes of cantilever beam and truss structure are shown with stress contour plot by the results of the subproblem approximation method and the first order approximation methd.

  • High powered computers and engineering computer systems allow designers to routinely simulate complex physical phenomena. The presented work deals with the analysis of two finite element method optimization techniques (First Order Method-FOM and Subproblem Approximation Method-SAM) implemented in the individual Design Optimization module in the Ansys software to analyze the behavior of real problems. A design optimization is a difficult mathematical process, intended to find the minimum or maximum of an objective function, which is mostly based on iterative procedure. Using optimization techniques in engineering designs requires detailed knowledge of the analyzed problem but also an ability to select the appropriate optimization method. The methods embedded in advanced computer software are based on different optimization techniques and their efficiency is significantly influenced by the specific character of a problem. The efficiency, robustness and accuracy of the methods are studied through strictly convex two-dimensional optimization problem, which is represented by volume minimization of two bars' plane frame structure subjected to maximal vertical displacement limit. Advantages and disadvantages of the methods are described and some practical tips provided which could be beneficial in any efficient engineering design by using an optimization method.

  • For the optimization of the fundamental natural frequency of stiffened cylindrical shells, simulations were performed for cylindrical shells that were stiffened with between one and five ring stiffeners. ANSYS 11.0 was used to simulate the optimization for the natural frequency. The Subproblem Approximation Method was applied as the optimization method. The design function of the optimization was the geometry of the T-shaped ring stiffener, and the constraint function was the maximum additional volume, constrained to a 10% increase. The objective function of the optimization was chosen to maximize the fundamental natural frequency. The performance index for optimal design was defined as the ratio of the natural frequency to the volume of the unstiffened and stiffened shells. The optimal performance index was obtained for the shell stiffened with three rings.

  • During fuel irradiation tests, all parts of cylindrical structure with multiple holes act as heat sources due to fussion heal and ${\gamma}-flux$. The high temperature is especially generated over $2500^{\circ}C$ in the center of pellet. Due to the high temperature, many problems occur, such as melting of pellet and declining of heat transfer between cladding and coolant. [n this study, it is attempted 10 minimize the temperature of pellet using optimization method about geometric variables. For thermal and optimization analysis or structure. the finite element method code. ANSYS 5.7 is used. In this procedure. subproblem approximation method is used to the optimization methods. Through the optimum design process, the temperature of sealed basket type is reduced from $2537^{\circ}C$ to $2181^{\circ}C$ and the temperature of open basket type is reduced from $2560^{\circ}C$ to $2106^{\circ}C$.

  • During fuel irradiation tests, all parts of cylindrical structure with multiple holes act as heat sources due to fussion heat and ${\gamma}$-flux. The high temperature is especially generated in the center of pellet. Because of the high temperature, many problems occur, such as melting of pellet and declining of heat transfer between cladding and coolant. In this paper, it is attempted to minimize the temperature of pellet using optimization method. For thermal and optimization analysis of structure, the finite element method code, ANSYS 5.7 is used. Through the optimum design process, the temperature of SBT diminished 10% and the temperature of OBT diminished 18%.

  • An automated mechanical parking system with a dedicated multi-floor building has been studied for improvements. Among the major components of the system, study is focused on the trolly which is the most important to the overall reliability of the system. The trolley holds and moves a parked vehicle horizontally into a specified position for the next sequence of operations. Optimization of a trolly structure is presented for strength and simplicity. With optimization, the weight has been reduced by 30% with respect to the conventional design.
