  • Purpose: Suicide among adolescents is a serious problem worldwide, and especially, the suicide rate of teenagers is increasing rapidly in South Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting the respective suicidal behavior in terms of home-environment characteristics, health behavior characteristics, and psychological health characteristics in Korean adolescents. Methods: The data of the Web-based Survey of the Youth Risk Behavior from 2015 to 2017 collected by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: The influential factors by depression and suicidal behavior (suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal plan (SP), and suicidal attempt (SA)) were female(adjusted odds ratios [aOR], 1.45, 1.69, 1.30, 2.19), age (aOR 1.03, 0.98, 0.97, 0.90), no family members (aOR 1.21, 1.36, 2.11, 2.32), living with only the father (aOR 1.05, 1.06, 1.07, 1.11), high economic status (aOR 1.15, 1.22, 1.34, 1.46), residence in relatives' home (aOR 1.6, 1.36, 2.34, 1.97), drinking experience (aOR 1.35, 1.47, 1.57, 1.76), smoking experience (aOR 1.28, 1.30, 1.31, 1.94), hospital treatment experience due to violence (aOR 2.18, 3.33, 6.24, 8.40), bad health status (aOR 1.23, 1.48, 2.00, 2.15), unhappiness (aOR 2.49, 6.14, 6.72, 8.89), and a lot of stress (aOR 6.05, 10.40, 4.86, 5.52). Conclusion: The suicidal behavior risk screening and prevention program for adolescents should be developed considering the subjective happiness and hospital treatment experience status due to violence that affects suicidal behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the transitional relationship between high school students' latent classes of academic factors and their latent classes of physical health factors. We used data taken from high school students in the Korea Child-Youth Happiness Index survey for 2017. The relationship between the two types of latent classes were analyzed by means of transition probabilities. In the latent class analysis on academic factors, three latent classes were drawn out as a best-fit model. Stress, academic achievement and private education factors appeared on a straight line. They were classified into 'low academic stress, academic achievement, and private education groups,', 'middle academic stress, academic achievement, and private education group', and 'high academic stress, academic achievement, and private education groups', respectively. In the latent class analysis of physical health factors, three latent classes were drawn as a best-fit model. They were classified into a 'frequent treatment group' that had a middle level of subjective health satisfaction, a high body mass index, and experiences of outpatient and hospitalization treatments, a 'low subjective health satisfaction group' that had remarkably lower subjective health satisfaction, and a 'health group' that had a high level of health satisfaction and condition. The relationship between the two types of latent classes were analyzed on the basis of transitional probabilities. As a result, it was found that the 'high academic stress, academic achievement, and private education group' had the highest probability of being involved in the 'frequent treatment group' or the 'low subjective health satisfaction group'. Based on a person-centered approach, it was found that the latent group with high risk in terms of their academic factors was likely to belong to a relatively unhealthy latent group. This study confirmed the transitional relationship between academic factors and physical health factors. This implies that it is necessary to select physical health risk groups according to academic factors and to consider effective intervention and tailored approaches which are most appropriate to the subjects.

  • This study developed a measure to measure wellness-seeking behavior in important areas of life for general adults in Korea and verified its validity. For the development of the wellness scale, 31 factors derived through literature review, expert interviews, in-depth interviews, open questionnaires 1 and 2, and 182 questions were selected as the final 10 factors and 99 questions. Through exploratory factor analysis of the results of the preliminary survey of 351 adults in Korea, 58 questions of 10 factors were derived, and some of the questions reflecting important concepts in each factor were revised, and this survey was conducted with 63 questions of 10 factors. In this survey conducted on 667 people, to verify the validity of the composition concept of this test, the entire sampling was divided into two groups, one group was subjected to exploratory factor analysis, and the other group was subjected to confirmatory factor analysis. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, 63 questions of 10 factors (work, community, family, others, economic power, self-esteem, leisure, physical health, spirituality, and self-growth) were finally derived, and confirmatory factor analysis using the structural equation model verified that the model fit criteria were met. Convergence validity was verified using the K-MHC-SF and Wellness Index for Workers to verify whether the derived wellness scale and its sub-factors actually measure wellness. As a result of analyzing the relationship between the variables and factors of the Subjective Happiness Scale and Life Scale to verify the validity related to the criteria, it was found to be a significant correlation. As a result of confirming the significance of each path through multiple regression analysis, the 'self-esteem' on the wellness scale was identified as the most important factor influencing subjective happiness and life satisfaction. Finally, discussions on this research process and results, academic significance and practical significance, limitations, and future research directions were presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the health behaviors, mental health and internet addiction by gender differences among Korean adolescents and to examine relevances between health behaviors, mental health and internet addiction. The subjects were 73,238 Korean adolescents(male: 38,391, female: 34,847) who were recruited through national web-based survey. The data were derived from the Sixth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2010 in South Korea. There were significant differences in health behaviors, mental health and internet addiction. by gender differences. Prevalence of internet addiction was male: 3.9%, female: 1.9% in this study. As the result of multiple logistic regression, the risk of internet addiction was increased in the case of smoking experience, substance experience, subjective health status, feeling of stress, depression experience, suicidal ideation, feeling of happiness, and sufficiency of sleeps in both male and female. Therefore, to decrease internet addiction prevalence, it is necessary to detect and manage the influencing risk factors of internet addiction such as health behaviors and mental health. And the health-promotion intervention to improve the internet addiction of adolescents should be planed and provided considering such differences by gender differences.

  • This study investigated the status of drinking highly caffeinated beverages by Korean adolescents, and we identified the factors influencing this behavior by Korean adolescents by using statistics from the 13th (2017) Survey on Youth Health Behavior Online Survey. The data was collected from 62,276 middle and high school students and the variables of this study included demographic factors, health behavioral factors, mental health factors and the availability of highly caffeinated beverages. The methods of data analysis included descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis. This study found that the intake rate of highly caffeinated beverages was 1.9% for men and 1.5% for women, and these percentages increased with age (p<0.001). Current smoking and drinking, current drug usage and active people also had high intake of caffeinated beverages (p<0.001). A high level of stress, a low level of subjective sleep satisfaction and a feeling of happiness increased the rate of consuming highly caffeinated beverages. The factors of drinking highly caffeinated beverages were gender, age, smoking, physical activity, drug use, stress level, depression and suicidal ideation. Therefore, continuous discussion is needed to improve both the health behavior and mental health by managing the stress felt by Korean adolescents.

  • This study investigates convergent influence on depression and its association with positive emotion, negative emotion and job seeking stress among some college women of health affiliated educations. The survey was administered to 419 college women in Honam area from March 9th to April 30th, 2015. The structured self-administered questionaries were used. The depression was negatively correlated with positive emotion and it was positively correlated with negative emotion and job seeking stress. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis show the following. The depression of respondents turned out to be significantly higher in following groups: a group in which self esteem is lower, a group in which subjective happiness is lower, a group in which hopelessness is higher, a group in which type A behavior pattern is higher, a group in which personality stress is higher. Their explanatory power was 47.1%. With the analysis of covariance structure, we could confirm relationship among the four factors such as positive emotion, negative emotion, job seeking stress and depression. In conclusion, the results of the study indicate that the efforts, to increase positive emotion, and to decrease negative emotion and job seeking stress, are required to reduce the depression level of the college women of health affiliated educations.
