Implementation and Evaluation of an HMM-Based Speech Synthesis System for the Tagalog Language

  • This paper describes the development and assessment of a hidden Markov model (HMM) based Tagalog speech synthesis system, where Tagalog is the most widely spoken indigenous language of the Philippines. Several aspects of the design process are discussed here. In order to build the synthesizer a speech database is recorded and phonetically segmented. The constructed speech corpus contains approximately 89 minutes of Tagalog speech organized in 596 spoken utterances. Furthermore, contextual information is determined. The quality of the synthesized speech is assessed by subjective tests employing 25 native Tagalog speakers as respondents. Experimental results show that the new system is able to obtain a 3.29 MOS which indicates that the developed system is able to produce highly intelligible neutral Tagalog speech with stable quality even when a small amount of speech data is used for HMM training.

  • In speech communication systems where two different speech codecs are interoperated, transcoding algorithm is a good approach because of its low complexity and improved synthesized speech quality. This paper proposes an efficient method to further improve the performance of transcoding algorithms as well as to reduce the complexity. In the conventional transcoding algorithms. a post-filter and a perceptual weighting filter should be operated sequentially because both decoding and encoding processes are needed. This results in the redundancy of the processing in terms of complexity and perceptual quality. Using the fact that their filter structures are similar, we replaced the two filters with one. The proposed algorithm requires 72.8% lower complexity than the conventional transcoding algorithm when we compare only the complexity of the filtering processes. The results of both objective and subjective tests verify that the proposed algorithm has slightly better quality than the conventional one.

  • To provide ameliorated aided environment to hearing impaired listeners, background noise reduction techniques are investigated as a front-end of conventional hearing aids, and their effects are tested in a subjective manner. Several speech enhancement schemes were implemented and preference tests or normal listeners are performed to select the best possible scheme or hearing impaired listeners. Results indicated that SDT scores without the speech enhancement scheme drop more sharply as SNR decreases than those with the speech enhancement techniques. SDT scores obtained or hearing impaired listeners with hearing aids showed large variability. However, all impaired listeners preferred noise suppressed sounds to unsuppressed ones.

낮은 차원의 벡터 변환을 통한 음성 변환 (Voice conversion using low dimensional vector mapping)

  • In this paper, we propose a voice personality transformation method which makes one person's voice sound like another person's voice. In order to transform the voice personality, vocal tract transfer function is used as a transformation parameter. Comparing with previous methods, the proposed method can obtain high-quality transformed speech with low computational complexity. Conversion between the vocal tract transfer functions is implemented by a linear mapping based on soft clustering. In this process, mean LPC cepstrum coefficients and mean removed LPC cepstrum modeled by the low dimensional vector are used as transformation parameters. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, mapping rules are generated from 61 Korean words uttered by two male and one female speakers. These rules are then applied to 9 sentences uttered by the same persons, and objective evaluation and subjective listening tests for the transformed speech are performed.

사운드스케이프 조성을 위한 능동형 음장조성시스템의 현장적용 평가 (Evaluation of the Field Application of "Spontaneous Acoustic Field Reproduction System(SAFRS)" to Propose Soundscape)

  • SAFRS is the system designed to reproduce the harmonic sound into the space according to the environmental factors. Here the harmonic sound means the sound which judged by the subjective tests, and the methods were suggested in the former studies. In this research, SAFRS was applied into the Square of D University to evaluate and verify the effectiveness of the system and a few evaluations were carried out as follows; 1) sound perception, frequency, volume and harmony with the space, 2) images of the square and acoustic environment and 3) acoustic environment with existing sounds, fountain sound, produced sound by SAFRS, and both of them respectively. The results can be summarized as follows; 1) According to the evaluation on acoustic environment, no relationships were shown between the cognition of sounds produced by SAFRS and the frequency or volume, but inverse proportion was shown between the volume and special harmony. 2) As the result of image evaluation. the relationship between space and sound image was shown proportional only except the evaluation on main road at night time, it means that the sound proposal with the visual contents matching with the sounds would be more effective than the proposal of sound only. 3) Results of evaluation on acoustic environment showed that the cognition effect at night time was shown higher than that of day time when only the acoustic element was given and the effect was increased when the visual elements matches with the acoustic elements if both of them were given. It confirmed the harmony between visual and acoustic elements was very important.

Digital Image Analysis를 이용한 동적수침시험 평가방법의 개선 연구 (Evaluation of Results of Dynamic Immersion Test Using Digital Image Analysis)

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study was to evaluate the results of the dynamic immersion test (DIT) through digital image analysis (DIA). METHODS : The asphalt binder retained post DIT was inspected visually by more than three investigators. However, because visual observations can be subjective, depending on the inspector's skills and knowledge, DIA was also performed. The threshold value for the DIA was determined by a mesh analysis, in which the digital image to be analyzed is divided into very small meshes. In addition, the bitumen bond strength (BBS) test was also performed to the compare the visual results with the mechanical values. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Depending on the materials used, various methods can be used to predict the behavior of retained asphalt. However, the increasing ratio in the trend of retained asphalt shows different behaviors among the evaluation methods. In this study, the results of the visual observations were significantly different from those of the DIA, the mesh analysis, and the BBS tests. Thus, DIA is an appropriate method for evaluating the results of the DIT. However, in order to use this technique in the field, it is necessary to determine a more reasonable threshold value by performing DIA on various materials.

Computerized Sunnybrook facial grading scale (SBface) application for facial paralysis evaluation

  • Background The Sunnybrook facial grading scale is a comprehensive scale for the evaluation of facial paralysis patients. Its results greatly depend on subjective input. This study aimed to develop and validate an automated Sunnybrook facial grading scale (SBface) to more objectively assess disfigurement due to facial paralysis. Methods An application compatible with iOS version 11.0 and up was developed. The software automatically detected facial features in standardized photographs and generated scores following the Sunnybrook facial grading scale. Photographic data from 30 unilateral facial paralysis patients were randomly sampled for validation. Intrarater reliability was tested by conducting two identical tests at a 2-week interval. Interrater reliability was tested between the software and three facial nerve clinicians. Results A beta version of the SBface application was tested. Intrarater reliability showed excellent congruence between the two tests. Moderate to strong positive correlations were found between the software and an otolaryngologist, including the total scores of the three individual software domains and composite scores. However, 74.4% (29/39) of the subdomain items showed low to zero correlation with the human raters (κ<0.2). The correlations between the human raters showed good congruence for most of the total and composite scores, with 10.3% (4/39) of the subdomain items failing to correspond (κ<0.2). Conclusions The SBface application is efficient and accurate for evaluating the degree of facial paralysis based on the Sunnybrook facial grading scale. However, correlations of the software-derived results with those of human raters are limited by the software algorithm and the raters' inconsistency.

사진의 주관적 화질 평가 방법; 요인 분석을 통한 평가 항목 선정을 중심으로 (Methods of Subjective Image Quality Evaluation in Pictorial Images)

  • 최근 재현 장비의 목적은 장면을 정확하게 재현하는 것에서 사용자의 만족도를 높이는 것으로 변화하고 있다. 이는 카메라로 대표되는 재현 장비의 발전 방향이 성능 위주에서 품질 위주로, 개발자 중심에서 사용자 중심으로 전환되고 있다는 의미이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 사용자의 인지 특성에 기반을 둔 사진의 화질 평가 방법을 제안하고자 한다. 사진은 다양한 물리적 화질 속성이 복합적으로 어우러져 완성되는 것으로 몇 가지 성능에 대한 평가만으로는 전반적인 화질을 평가할 수 없다. 따라서 제 3의 관찰자에 의한 주관적인 화질 평가가 필요하다. 주관적 화질 평가는 평가 방법과 결과 도출 방법이 쉬워야 하고, 도출된 평가 결과는 전체적인 화질을 어우르는 동시에 높은 신뢰도를 가져야 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 화질 만족도에 영향을 미치는 요소들은 분석하여 구체적인 평가 언어를 수립하고, 사진 이미지를 실험 자극으로 활용한 주관적 화질 평가 실험을 통해 화질 평가 항목을 수립함으로써 효율적이고 정확한 방법으로 주관적 화질을 평가할 수 있도록 하였다.

이미지 분석기법을 이용한 레일표면손상 진단애플리케이션 개발 (Development of Diagnosis Application for Rail Surface Damage using Image Analysis Techniques)

  • 최근 제정된 궤도시설의 성능평가에 관한 세부지침에서 궤도성능평가의 평가절차 및 실시방법 등에 관한 필요사항을 제시하였다. 그러나 외관조사(육안조사)에 의해 레일표면손상의 등급이 결정되며, 점검자의 주관적인 판단으로 정성적인 평가에만 의존할 수밖에 없는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 레일표면손상을 이용하여 레일내부결함까지 진단할 수 있는 진단애플리케이션을 개발하고자 하였다. 현장조사에서는 레일표면손상을 조사하고 패턴을 분석하였다. 또한 실내시험에서는 레일내부손상 이미지 데이터를 구축하기 위하여 SEM 시험을 이용하였으며, 균열 길이, 깊이 및 각도를 정량화하였다. 본 연구에서는 현장조사와 실내시험에서 구축한 이미지 데이터를 적용한 딥러닝 모델(Fast R-CNN)을 애플리케이션에 적용하였다, 스마트기기에서 사용이 가능한 딥러닝 모델을 이용한 레일표면손상 진단 애플리케이션(App)을 개발하여 향후 궤도진단 및 성능평가 업무에 활용 가능한 레일표면손상 스마트 진단시스템을 개발하였다.

강의전용 공간으로 리모델링된 대학 소공연장의 주관적 음향성능 평가 : W대학의 사례를 바탕으로 (Evaluation of the Subjective Acoustic Performance of University Small Hall Remodeled as a Lecture Room : Based on the case of the W University)

  • 교육의 기본적인 형태는 지식의 전달, 즉 음성 전달을 통해 교수가 교육수요자에게 지식을 전달하는 방식이므로 쾌적한 학습 환경 조성에 있어 음환경은 필수적인 고려 요소이다. 실내 음환경은 재실자의 정신적 스트레스와 매우 밀접한 연관성을 가지고 있으므로 적절한 음환경의 조성 여부에 따라 교육의 질적 수준 또한 크게 변화할 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 선행연구에서 제시한 물리적 음향성능 자료를 바탕으로 가청화 기법을 활용한 청감실험을 실시하였으며 이를 통해 강의전용 공간의 물리적 음향성능 개선에 따른 주관적 음향성능의 만족도 변화를 분석하였다. 연구는 강의전용 공간에서 주로 사용되는 음원 6개를 선정하여 8개의 어휘로 평가를 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 음향성능의 개선에 따라 주관적 음향성능도 개선되었으며 소공연장을 강의전용 공간으로 리모델링한 후 "음악"에 대한 주관적 반응보다 "음성"에 대한 주관적 반응이 긍정적으로 나타나 음성 전달에 보다 적합한 공간으로 개선되었음을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 교육시설의 음환경 개선 시 물리적 음향성능 뿐만 아니라 청감실험을 통한 주관적 음향성능 검증의 필요성을 강조하고자 하였다.
