  • Little has been known about the process of the language teacher professional development. The present study aims to investigate an assumption that anybody who has subject matter knowledge will be a good language teacher. A teacher with rich linguistic knowledge started to question the effectiveness of his online class. The teacher, in collaboration with a teacher trainer, became involved in the critical examination of his online class, seeking for more effective ways of teaching. The trainer provided the teacher with clinical supervision, which is characterized as developmental, collaborative, non-judgemental, interactive, and teacher-centered. The data collected at the multi-facets of the online teaching shows how the process of the teacher's decision-making became principled on the basis of recent developments in English language teaching, and how the teacher has gained pedagogical knowledge through reflection upon his teaching. The feedback from the students reveals that such teacher professional development is beneficial to student learning. These findings suggest that language teacher's professional development can take place when they are engaged in reflective teaching and classroom investigation. It is also suggested that the process of teacher development can be enhanced through collaborative supervision with trust, openness and congeniality between parties involved.

  • In this paper, we analyze what the components of mathematics teacher` knowledge are, and find that mathematics teacher need knowledge of three areas: subject matter knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge. Studies of practicing teachers suggest that When teachers lack understanding in their respective disciplines, it inhibits them from providing students the best learning opportunities, but that a teacher possessing pedagogical content knowledge provides learners with multiple approaches into learning. Some teachers having sound knowledge of mathematics and students were able to respond appropriately to students' questions, design appropriate learning activities involving a variety of mathematical representations, and orchestrate mathematical discourse in the classroom. Thus, it appears that mathematics teachers' knowledge positively affect teaching and student learning..

  • Using Korea Education Longitudinal Study and administrative school data, this paper analyzes school characteristics that influence the demand for private education. Among other findings, it should be noted that private education expenditure tends to be decreased when student evaluation of teacher effectiveness is high, the average education level of teachers is high, and individualized education is offered through subject-based classroom. These results suggest that the demand for private education could be dropped by a better quality and high effort of teachers, which would be attained through an improved education system for teaching profession and student-oriented teacher evaluation. In addition, ability grouping within school via subject-based classrooms with different levels appears to be helpful to overcome uniformity of school equalization system without inducing an increasing demand for private education.

  • The aim of this paper is to provide teacher awareness and the status of robot based instruction(RBI) by focusing on the school curriculum. To gather that information, we conducted a questionnaire survey composed of six items to 116 teachers who have had experiences on RBI. The questions are about the fit school year for RBI, the fit subjects for it, the possibility of applying it to regular subject, the fit students' learning levels for it, the fit learning styles for it and effective methods to apply it to regular subject teachers. The result is as follows: (1) RBI is suitable for fifth and sixth grade in elementary school and all grades in high school. (2) It is suitable for all regular subjects in all schools. (3) It is more effective for the students who have average learning level. (4) It fits into introverted students more than the other style of learners. (5) It is likely to be more effective in supporting of learning and understanding of the contents than merely assisting the teachers' instruction. (6) The teachers showed positive awareness on applying RBI to subject of creative activities. The results are significant in relation to the following two views. First, we can get the positive possibility in applying school curriculum using RBI. Second we can foresee that RBI will provide an innovative paradigm to school curriculum. In addition, the results of this paper can be used as preliminary information for developing models and programs on RBI.

  • The purpose of this study is to find a better way for placement of teacher librarians. So, the literature research is applied for the study. It is unreasonable to arrange one school librarian staff per 1,500 students, based on the criteria of the total number of personnel including that of teacher librarians and practice teachers and librarian, in accordance with the existing enforcement decree of Article 7. In fact, this clause, linked to other related regulations, makes it difficult to place teacher librarians. And the quota of teacher librarians is noticeably low as compared with that of other teachers who are not-teaching the subject matter. This operates disadvantageously to teacher librarians when it comes to assigning quota in secondary teacher selection test and the accumulation of this phenomenon gradually worsens the current situation. The roles of teacher librarians and librarians should be defined separately when amending the Enforcement Decree of School Libraries Promotion. And we should also take into consideration that the number of students per school is around 500. Therefore, Enforcement Decree of School Libraries Promotion Act should be revised toward placing teacher librarians depending on the size and number of schools. Predictability should be secured in teacher librarians selection test. In addition, flexibility should be granted to the training institute so that many people can prepare the teacher librarians qualification. Finally, it is necessary to increase the teacher librarian capacity for private schools. This study will be the basis of the theoretical foundation for stable teacher librarian placement.

The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, practical abilities among specialized subject teachers of vocational education high school were compared by existence of vocational education high school teacher recruitment practical examination. As a result, the average of practical ability of the group who was fulfilled by recruitment practical examination was somewhat high in all of 5 sub-areas for practical ability, but wasn't significant statistically. Second, the differences of practical ability by background variable among specialized subject teacher of vocational education high school were compared. As a result, the group who possesses national technology licence, existence of short-term teaching career, teaching course completion form of open teacher training showed higher average and it showed significant differences statistically.

  • This study examines a Korean elementary school EFL teacher's practice of teacher-based assessment (TBA), a subject which has been little researched despite the authorities' strong call for its implementation. The classroom interactions for TBA were observed and audio-recorded in eight fifth-grade classes between March and June 2010. Additionally, the teacher and students were interviewed in a semi-structured way. The results showed that the teacher used three types of TBA: assessment of individual students on different topics, assessment of the entire class on the same topic, and assessment of individual students on the same topic. Due mainly to time constraints during class time and classroom management issues, the teacher preferred implementing the first two types of TBA. During the practice of the types, the teacher provided prompts or posed questions in ways that elicited responses which were short in length and easy. Although the third type of TBA was perceived by both the teacher and students as helping students enhance their EFL proficiency and was the most favored by the students, it was viewed by the teacher as having the potential of causing classroom management difficulties. Based on the findings, a number of implications are suggested.

  • The environment subject has been introduced to the national curriculum in 1992 in order to overcome serious environmental problems. As using environmental issues in a class, the environment teachers inevitably face some conflicts associated with their role. By applying the questionnaire survey to 192 environment teachers, this study was conducted to understand their attitude and awareness of teacher role in the issue-based classes. The results showed that the majority(92.2%) of the participants had willingness to share their opinion on the issues under consideration with their students. This result implied that environment teachers maintain a position considerably different from the position (value-free and fair) that has been favored and suggested by previous research. This discrepancy may has been related to the unique history and identity of the environment subject in Korea. Despite their high level of willingness, the environment teachers also seemed to experience several barriers to managing issue-based classes effective such as time management, low students interest, and limited teaching materials. To make environmental issue-based classes interesting and meaningful, additional efforts are need to develop issue-based teaching modules and provide both teachers and teacher students with opportunities for learning those modules and teaching strategies.
