In this study, we compare various physicochemical properties of solvent extracted coals obtained at both mild and high temperature conditions. In order to characterize the extraction behavior, experiments were performed using a sub-bituminous coal (Kideco) and a polar solvent (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, NMP), where the extraction temperature and the effect of solvent recycling were evaluated. As the extraction temperature increased up to $350^{\circ}C$, an extraction yield and a calorific value of the extracted coal increased, while an ash content of the extracted coal decreased. FT-IR results revealed that the surface of the coal extracted at $350^{\circ}C$ was found to contain more amide, aromatic ester, and aliphatic ether groups than that at the lower temperatures. The result of MALDI-TOF/MS analysis confirmed that the smaller molecules with 300~500 m/z were extracted at a mild condition, while the bigger molecules in the range of 500~1500 m/z were extracted at the high temperature.
In general, $CH_4$ concentrations generated in combustion facilities are known to be ppm units. In most cases, $CH_4$ samples are collected in Tedlar bags and transported to laboratories for analysis. Considering this fact, in the present study, an attempt was made to find out how long samples can be stored in cases where they are kept in bags and transported as a preliminary study for sampling. According to the results of the experiment using simulated gases (1 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm) in Tedlar bag, $CH_4$ was safe up to 240 hr which is the full time. In the case of simulated gases are containing 4 kind gases ($N_2$, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $N_2O$). Field samples (samples of obtained by collecting combustion facilities' exhaust gases) are known to contain highly reactive substances (for example NOx, SOx, and VOCs) and may affect each other. In the present study, one site sample was secured from each of a bituminous coal combustion facility and an LNG combustion facility and whether the concentrations of $CH_4$ gas would change over time (24 hr, 96 hr, 144 hr, 192 hr) was checked. Since site samples could not be analyzed on the day of collection, an experiment was started 24 hr after the time point of sampling to analyze the samples. As with the results of analysis of the simulated gas (240 hr), the results of analysis using the site sample indicated that it could be stored for the full study period 192 hr. Therefore, it was judged that if 192 hr would be taken after sampling before the sample would be analyzed, the concentration value should be reliable.
In this study, the $N_2O$, emitted from combustion facility, were analyzed by using simulated gas and field samples to find out how long samples can be stored in Tedlar bag. According to the results of the experiment using simulated gases (1 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm) in Tedlar bag, After 144hr, $N_2O$ concentration of simulated gases changed that 1 ppm is 5.3%, 5 ppm is 12.8%, and 10ppm is 10.5%. The higher initial concentration of simulated gas was, the larger rate of $N_2O$ concentration was changed. In case of high concentration samples, it need to be careful when it was analyzed after 144 hr. Stability evaluation in Tedlar bag was carried out through field samples such as combustion facility of bituminous coal, B-C oil and LNG. The concentration rate of field samples, which is under 1 ppm of average initial concentration, was evaluated using statistical method. As a result, $N_2O$ concentrations were changed to field samples in the bag even when 96 hr had passed. And after sampling, it is necessary that sample analysis should be quickly as soon as possible.

The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of unburned carbon (UBC) and NOx emissions for pulverized coal when air staging combustion is applied. A two-staged drop tube furnace capable of applying air staging combustion was designed and installed. The combustion of sub-bituminous (Tanito) has been investigated. UBC and the NOx concentration were measured under various temperatures and stoichiometric ratios in unstaged and staged combustion. As a result, UBC decreased and the NOx concentration increased with an increase in stoichiometric ratio and temperature. In particular, the NOx reduction mechanism was activated when the temperature in the fuel rich zone increased. Both UBC and the NOx concentration decreased as the temperature increased in the fuel rich zone. A high NOx reduction effect was obtained, compared to the UBC increase, when the air staging technique was applied.

Although the anthracite power plant is an important source of greenhouse gas, research on this type of power plant has not been conducted much. The present study investigated the entire anthracite power plants in Korea and analyzed the emitted gas in connection with GC/FD and a methanizer in order to develop $CO_2$ emission factors. The study also sampled the anthracite to analyze the amount of carbon and hydrogen using an element analyzer, and to measure the calorie using an automatic calorie analyzer. The emission factors computed through the fuel analysis was 30.45 kg/GJ and that computed through the $CO_2$ gas analysis was 26.48 kg/GJ. The former is approximately about 15% higher than the latter. When compared the carbon content factors of anthracite with that of bituminous coal, the value of anthracite was 24% higher Compared with IPCC values, the emission factors by the fuel was 14% higher, and that by the emitted $CO_2$ gas was about 1.2% lower. More research is needed on our own emission factors of various energy-consuming facilities in order to stand on a higher position in international negotiations regarding the treaties on climate changes.
Gasification kinetics of an Indonesian sub-bituminous coal-char with $CO_2$at elevated pressure was investigated with a pressurised drop tube furnace reactor. The effects of reaction temperature (900~140$0^{\circ}C$), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (0.1~0.5 MPa), and total system pressure (0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5MPa) on gasification rate of the coal char with $CO_2$have been determined. It was found that the gasification rate was dependent on the total system pressure with the same partial pressure and temperature. The $n^{th}$ order rate equation (R=k $P^{g}$$_{asn}$) was modified to be R=k $P^{g}$$_{asn}$$P^{m}$$_{total}$ to describe the gasification rate where the total system pressure was changed. The gasification reaction rate of char-$CO_2$at high temperature and elevated pressure may be expressed as dX/dt=(174.1)exp(-71.5/RT)( $P_{CO2}$)0.40( $P_{total}$ )0.65(1-X)$^{2}$ 3/.X> 3/.
The results of an experimental investigation on the co-firing characteristics and slagging behavior of dried and hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge, sub-bituminous coal, and wood pellet in a fluidized bed were presented. Combustion tests were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed system at the uniform fuel-air equivalence ratio, air flow rate, and initial bed temperature to measure bed temperature distribution and combustion gas composition. 4 different fuel blending cases were prepared by mixing sewage sludge fuels with coal and wood pellet with the ratio of 50 : 50 by the heating value. $NO_x$ was mostly NO than $NO_2$ and measured in the range of 400 to 600 ppm in all cases. $SO_2$ was considered to be affected mostly by the sulfur content of the sewage sludge fuels. The cases of hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge mixture showed slightly less $SO_2$ emission but higher fuel-N conversion than the dried sewage sludge mixing cases. The result of fly ash composition analysis implied that the sewage sludge fuels would increase the possibility of slagging/fouling considering the contents of alkali species, such as Na, K, P. Between the two different sewage sludge fuels, dried sewage sludge fuel was expected to have the more severe impact on slagging/fouling behavior than hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge fuel.
Oxy-combustion with a circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFBC) technology has been paid attention to cope with the climate change and fuel supply problem. In addition, Oxy-CFBC technology as one of the methods for carbon dioxide capture is an eco-friendly that can reduce air pollutants, such as $SO_2$, NO and CO through a flue gas recirculation process. The newly developed $100kW_{th}$ pilot-scale Oxy-CFBC system used for this research has been continuously utilizing to investigate oxy-combustion characteristics for various fuels, coals and biomasses to verify the possibility of fuel diversification. The anthracite is known as a low reactivity fuel due to a lot of fixed carbon and ash. Therefore, this study aims not only to improve combustion efficiency of an anthracite, but also to capture carbon dioxide. As a result, compared to air-combustion of sub-bituminous coal, oxy-combustion of anthracite could improve 2% combustion efficiency and emissions of $SO_2$, CO and NO were reduced 15%, 60% and 99%, respectively. In addition, stable operating of Oxy-CFBC could capture above 94 vol.% $CO_2$.

This study investigated the spontaneous combustion behavior of solvent-treated low rank coals. Indonesian lignite (a KBB and SM coal) and sub-bituminous (a Roto coal) were mixed with non-polar 1-methyl naphthalene (1MN) either by mechanical agitation or ultrasonication. The property change associated with 1MN treatment was then analyzed using proximate analysis, calorific value analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and moisture re-adsorption test. Susceptibility to spontaneous combustion was evaluated using crossingpoint temperature (CPT) measurement along with gas analysis by GC. A FT-IR profile showed that oxygen functional groups and C-H bonding became weaker when treated by 1 MN. XPS results also indicated a decrease of the oxygen groups (C-O-, C=O and COO-). Increased hydrophobicity was found in the 1MN treated coals during moisture readsorption test. A CPT of the treated coals was ${\sim}20^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the corresponding raw coals and the ultrasonication was more effective way to enhance the stability against spontaneous combustion than the agitation. In the gas analysis less CO and $CO_2$ were emitted from 1MN treated coals, also indicating inhibition of pyrophoric behavior. The surface functional groups participating in the oxidation reaction seemed to be removed by the ultrasonication more effectively than by the simple mechanical agitation.

In this study, isothermal (350, 375, 400, 425, 450, 500, $850^{\circ}C$) experiments were carried out using a custom-made thermobalance to analyze the thermal decomposition properties of refuse plastic fuel (RPF), which is to be used as a cofiring fuel with a sub-bituminous coal at commercial circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler in Korea. In isothermal pyrolysis results, no change in the reaction model was observed in the temperature range of $375{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ and it was revealed that the first order chemical reaction (F1) is the most suitable among 12 reaction models. The activation energy shows similar results irrespective of application of reaction model in that the activation energy was 39.44 kcal/mol and 36.96 kcal/mol when using Arrhenius equation and iso-conversional method ($0.5{\leq}X{\leq}0.9$) respectively. Mean-while, the devolatilization time ($t_{dev}$) according to particle size (d) of RPF could be expressed as $t_{dev}=10.38d^{2.88}$ at $850^{\circ}C$, operation temperature of CFB and for even distribution and oxidation of RPF in CFB boiler, we found that the relationship of average dispersion distance (x) and particle size was $x{\leq}1.58d^{1.44}$.
